Demon - Father/Son Combinations

Featured Replies

Now to fill in some time while we wait for our draft choices.....

In light of the fact it now seems likely that Jack Viney will play with MFC.

Name some others that were associated with the Dees?

1: Can be a father that played VFL/AFL for another team and son played for MFC

or father played for MFC and his son played elsewhere.

2: Must be based on some facts -- proof games played. - Thats it.

As a added bonus ,do you know the jumper number they wore when they played?

I can think of about a dozen. But see how you go.

I'll have a crack.

Adrian Dullard/Tony Dullard

Brent Crosswell/Tom Kavanagh

Lloyd Burgmann/Shane Burgmann

Norm Smith/Peter Smith

Alan Johnson/Chris Johnson

Tony Sullivan/Chris Sullivan

That's it. I'm done.

Barassi (who in 1952 was the first player recruited under the Father and Son rule)

Bob Johnson Snr & Jnr.

Grandpa/Son rule - Travis Johnstone

Ben Sinclair - pick 62 in the 2009 draft, drafted by the pies. His old man played for the dees I believe. Will be an addition to the list if he can crack a game for the pies (or if we can draft him over at the end of next year and give him a game).

Didn't Tom Scully's bioligical father play for Richmond. (bigfooty rumour that doesn't need to be brought up again).

Barassi (who in 1952 was the first player recruited under the Father and Son rule)

I think the FAther-son rule was created for the specific purpose of recruiting him cbecause he wasn't in Melbourne's zone.

"Big" Bob Johnson please!!! B)

That reminds me.... my framed copy of the Team of the Century jumper shows the full back as "Bob" Johnson which I suppose is technically correct but of course to differentiate between the two equally famous "Bobs" the defender was better known as "Tas" or "Tassie". Several visitors assumed it was a mistake ! I just find it disrespectful and irritating.

They've been mentioned but:

Ken Hunter (Carl)/Cameron Hunter

Denis Clark/Michael Clark

Plus:

Graham Molloy/Glenn Molloy

Peter Lyon (Haw)/ Garry Lyon

Lloyd Burgmann/Shane Burgmann

Llyod coaches at my club yarragon, his son shane is a handy forward, two ripping blokes also,

Well done to everyone... Prof listed the most

There are a few I had forgotten about.

But I can think of at least 2 more combinations.

I'll hold off naming them, somebody may list who they are.

If you want to cheat here's one I prepared earlier

Also, a work in progress is the list of players who had relatives at other clubs http://wiki.fcmelbourne.com.au/Family+at+other+clubs

I think Don, Dennis and Ted Cordner's Dad played for Melbourne,too.(ie....3 generations.)

Our great coach "Checker" Hughes didn't play for Melb, but his son, Frank jnr. did.

I wish Bluey Adams, Donny Williams , Dicko and Barass.jnr had sons who played like their dads! How lucky were Geelong with the Abletts.

Congratulations Supermercado.

I hadn't had a good look around Demonwiki for some time. It is really filling out well and is a great source of info for us demon acolytes.

You must have put an enormous amount of work into this

Again, well done and thanks

As i remember he was known as Robert "Tassie" Johnson. No relation to the famous Bob Johnsons.

A solid Fullback, a superb kick (Kicks-ins using a Dropkick)

Agree with your comments, but our hit rate with successful Fathers/Sons isnt great.

The Cordner Family is our most successful.

Richie / Ken Emselle was one I was waiting for somebody to get.

Here's 2 more

John Lord / John Lord Jr

Barry Bourke / Darren Bourke

Darren played a few games in the 2nds, before

transferring to St.Kilda.Played seniors there.

Are Crosswell/Kavanagh the only F/S combo in AFL history to not have the same surname?

Both Barassi and Flower's sons were in the mix to get picked up by us (in the 80's and early 2000's respectively) but nothing came of it. Also in another odd family twist, Todd Viney's youngest brother trained with us after 2000 to try and get drafted.
