The 42nd bloke played by the 2nd worst team in the comp after being drafted 97th.

Doesn't sound like a star in the making to me.

One James Hird was drafted in the pick-70's...

Ugh... This old chestnut. Just because there has been 1 fairytale story of a player being drafted late turning into a superstar is not an argument that every player taken at the bottom of the draft will also be a good player.

Drafting, talent identification and player development is in a different stratosphere to what it was 20 years ago when Hird arrived.

If Dylan's brother wasn't a good player this conversation would never have even begun. It's as simple as that. Kyle Hardingham was taken 5 picks later than Dylan Grimes and has actually displayed some real ability as a strong marking forward. Why isn't there a thread about him???? It's illogical romanticism.

Yeah, much has progressed in identification.

Didn't Footscray get Chris Grant at pick 107 ? IIRC they tried to hide him once discovered at Daylesford; or so said Doug Hawkins when interviewed. Most likely succeeded tbh.

Mind you, premiership player Nathan Ablett.

He was clearly good enough, but his heart just wasn't in it.

Oh please. Steven Armstrong was a premiership player. If that's not enough to quash the argument that any player who wins a Grand Final is a good player, I don't know what is.

Been some overrated premiership players, Cameron Mooney with 3 flags? Come on! Probably a bit harsh, but gee I just don't rate Cameron Mooney at all

I recall hearing a current player, drafted in the last few years but still can't remember who exactly that it was, but he said Scott Clayton had a word to him and asked if he wouldn't mind having a quiet game in a certain finals match because other scouts would be there.

Clayton ended up getting him in the end.

I shouldn't be surprised, but I was, that these tactics would still be employed today when the talent identification system is so advanced.

I guess I thought this was a tactic from a bygone era.

Disappointed we couldn't get him.

We could have got him but decided against it. Had other priorities/picks..but I wish him all the best..

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
