Watts likely to re-sign

Featured Replies

Don't see Bate as a preimership player.

I could name 12 to 15 core players that will be the nucleus of that flag team - the other spots are going to be taken by periphery players fighting for spots.

I can see Bate being prominent amongst that group.

A flag team never has 22 stars of the game, remember.

Hard to fit under the cap...

Gold Coast can only take one player from any club, in any fashion. They cannot take an un contracted and also a trade.

Untrue.

They may take 1 uncontracted player from each club. Should they wish other players, contracted or otherwise, they have to trade for them.

To use the Brisbane example, if they want both Brennan and Rischitellli, they may take 1 as an uncontracted player, but must then come to terms with Brisbane to trade for the other. Given the number of picks they have I would imagine they could agree on a value for him fairly quickly.

...

Why, oh why, did you have to post the Darren Glass one?

Just brought back memories of that dark, dark day.

Watts is, IMO, the most exciting prospect we have right now.

It was funny - Watts gets absolutely DRIVEN into an Eagle's boot!!

But I do think we've seen enough of Watts to realise he will be a gem. Yes he has done some horrendous things but it's better he does these things now rather than later. It's all a learning curve and he'll be much better equipped for doing those many "horrendous acts" as he'll learn from each mistake.

Funny?

It puerile crap.

Not entertaining and not clever.

Loosen up, mate. It's at season's end and sometimes it's good to see the lighter side of things.

We all know Wattsy will be a ripper in future years.

Don't be so sensitive and doom n' gloom.

Don't worry he never sees the lighter side.

So the plan being to have as many key forwards simultaneously out of contract as possible???

Well that would be just plain-STUPID.

I wouldn't mind making fun of Jack Watts if you could come up with something funny, but that is so poor that it's offensive to the senses.

Clever little picture there too. Hilarious.

What is that, making fun of depression is it? Comedy gold.

Wouldn't be you playing the man instead of the ball again, John?

You lead the league in hypocrisy. Well done.

NO PROBLEM WHERE YOU ARE CONCERNED.and listen who's calling the kettle black.

Know lets get back to Watts- the MFC have been extra helpful in their assistance and development of this young man.For him not to sign. This indeed would lead to hypocrisy if he did not sign.

Why would it be hypocrisy?

hypocrisy [hɪˈpɒkrəsɪ]

n pl -sies

1. the practice of professing standards, beliefs, etc., contrary to one's real character or actual behaviour, esp the pretence of virtue and piety

Haha, yeh good call.

On Watts... loved his 55m goal in the 1st quarter vs Port but he really was kept quiet again.

7 kicks, 1 handball, 6 marks and 1 goal. He'll be better for each run he has and for each interstate game he participates in.

In line with the start of this thread.

WHY IS HE ( Watts ) NOT RESIGNED?

Is the MFC Playing hard ball!

Has Watts got too high a ticket on himself!

What is the hold up? ( no pun intended )

My guess is that he hasn't signed because contract negotiations are time consuming and the club has a mob of them to get through. Typically you'd have ~1/3 of your list coming out of contract at the same time so there'll be 10+ other players they're trying to sort out in parallel.

Not as exciting as MFC playing hardball or Watts being up himself, sorry.

My guess Is the club wants to announce a heap of signings at once. Once they're all done we'll hear about It.

I hope that is SOON

Contracts don't run-out till October 31st.

This desire to get everyone signed before we hit October is a foreign business model pushed by the media.

Watts not signed as of September 7 doesn't concern me.

Just as an aside - this was brought up on a separate issue and I don't want debate what some will debate here - but giving Bruce a three year contract from 08 to 10 in March of 07 was way too early to give someone a contract.

Basic theme of this post:

October signings - yeah, little late but meh.

Late September/Early October signings - Perfect time for everyone.

Early September signings - Taking trade off the table. Good time for clubs but I can see why agents wait.

March signings - WTF?

Absolute rubbish! I really wish people would stop posting this tripe. The GC can take one uncontracted player from each club for free. If they want others, they can trade for them.

You are 100% right. I can confirm that the club is about to announce a number of signings in one shot. This will include JW. I can confirm that all players out of the Connors tent (minus Miller) are re-signed or in the final stages of being re-signed. There is no risk on losing any of these players.

Who is managed by Connors again..?

Today or tomorrow (Wed, Thurs) are good news days for publicity...traditionally for these types of announcements. Or so I have found anyway. With a lead into TFS. Strategic media management before the build up to the semi's which are in itself seem to represent the lull during a finals series.

So you told us twice that you can confirm it, are you actually going to confirm it, or... ?

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
