Team v Freo

I was right about one of Trengove and Scully.

Trengove out.

The extended bench is:

Joel Macdonald, Kyle Cheney, Paul Johnson, Rohan Bail, Addam Maric, Matthew Warnock, Cale Morton

I believe that will be trimmed too:

Johnson, Bail, Morton, Warnock

Warnock will force MacDonald out.

Bail for Cheney and Morton for Trengove.

It would appear to me if MFC wish to win this game they must stop McPharlin

Why is it we make him look so good? Stop him and we are in with a definite chance no matter who is selected to play.

Any thoughts about who should play on him on Sunday?

The dark horse is Maric who was first emergency last week so didn't get to play for Casey. They might put him in ahead of one of Morton or Bail. (But god i hope not!)

I think Maric deserves a senior game by now and I want Morton to really earn his spot back in the team.

He gets too much of the easy ball for my liking at the moment.

Do you think Maric is going to be spending the whole game lying face down at the bottom of packs?

Morton and Maric are competing for the same spot IMO. My preference is Morton.

My preferred bench: Morton, Bail, Johnson (reluctantly), Macdonald.

3 times to make a point Nash?

Nah, with either of them I have their own personal development in mind, not the team's performance.

I think Maric would benefit from a few senior games & he has been on the cusp for a few weeks now.

Morton, I think, needs to do more than he is doing to reach his potential.

He's a walk-up start in the 1s but that could hurt him, just like a Deledio last year.

I think he coasts to an extent.

I think morton is in our best 22. The issue i have with him this year is that Jack Grimes is playing a similar role, being a creative half back player who find space to be an outlet and feed the midfield.

I think when morton played down back with Grimes we didnt get the most out of either player. Grimes IMO is a better player than Morton in a number of ways, so when grimes comes back from injury id like to see morton play up the ground (half forward) and leave jack to be the main creative force down back.

Both good players though, and as Grimes is out injured i think morton has a role in our backline

Anyone with a casual eye on the Essendon game last Sunday would recognise that Watts is a class act, albeit still a teenager. Dropping him for Hughes is ludicrous.

I agree.

We should play watts all year - he's shown gradual improvment each week

I'd just like to see him hang on to few more marks and maybe get a little harder . You see little guys like Jetta and Bennel bounce back to their feet and chase straight after they get knocked over, no reason why Watts cant play with the same desperation

Exactly. He is 20 years old FCS...

I think they're (ID & E25) talking of MacDonald, not Maric.

I think MacDonald has much to offer the club in the way of match-ups. I thought he did ok last week.

On exposed VFL form I would say that Bail is streets ahead of Morton if it is a fight between the two.

Morton offers greater height and versatility. Bail offers line breaking speed, endurance, strength, hardness and generally sound decision making.

I believe that given a bit of a run at it Rohan Bail will become a very good player for our senior team, not a depth player. I would like to see him given a game this week ahead of any of the other possibles.

I'm just taking it as a given that Bail will play. I'll be stunned if he doesn't. Played well when he was in the side, been tearing it up in the VFL, match fit, can provide run on a ground where run is absolutely crucial. He ticks every box.

I see the other positions as a battle between Warnock, Macdonald and possibly Cheney for one spot, and a battle between Maric and Morton for the other.

Um... his marking is impeccable!! It's one of his key attributes/strengths!

He needs to learn to keep his feet and he showed he is improving on that area last week during that [iece of (superb) play when he was in the forward pocket... took on a couple of Bombers... took a bump... tapped the ball to advantage... and set up the Sylvia goal. Watts was lying on the ground for a good 10 secs and the Dees players surrounded him when the goal was drilled. Fantastic.

Joel Mac is 25 as far as I know...

I was actually referring to Morton... LOL! All that talk about Cale must have got to me...

MacDonald is 25 turning 26 later this year (D.O.B. 10/10/84).

What is that claim based on?????

It's just my opinion of course... much like most of what you find on these forums.

I just don't think Joel is going to get any better and his current level is only good enough until he is overtaken by our kids.

It's not really an indictment on him. Few are good enough to play at the level he has, but I just don't think he's good enough to maintain his spot for much longer.

Maybe it says more about how highly I rate a lot of our kids.

Bartram is not getting dropped.

Out: PJ, Cheney

In: Bail, Morton or Warnock depending on defensive match-ups

We need run, and we can't afford to carry a second ruckman who does very little. Cheney can't kick, so he's out. We need some class from half-back which is where I'd like Morton to come in, and Bail picks himself now that he's fit again.

I don't want to risk Junior at Subi, even if he is right to go, because after a while out he's going to run out of legs, and we honestly can't afford that over there.

That means Jamar goes with Sandilands. When Sandilands has a rest, Dunn goes up in the ruck. We've done it before, and it didn't seem to hurt us.

Honestly mate--you've got to be joking! Sandilands does not ruck for the entire game, so how the hell could Jamar be expected to, at Subi and against Sandilands?. Just a recipe for disaster I would have thought.

2 other points. P.J played a hell of a game at Subi last year rucking against Dean Cox. I think the ground suits him. Secondly, what DOES happen if Jamar is injured in the first 10 minutes? We don't ahve another semi-ruckman in the squad.

Don't forget PJ had no preseason, got rushed back in, and in the first half last week was poor. In the 2nd half did well in the ruck and got the ball a bit. Vitally, he allows Jamar to spend time in thr forward line.

If he's cut from the i/c I'll be gutted!

You won't be gutted... PJ is safe. It's ludicrous to have Jamar do it all at Round 16.

But which of our kids is pushing for Joel Mac's close marking strong defensive role???

I'd say Cheney is the only one really pushing for that kind of role.

Great passage of play, but i thought maybe a little dramatic to stay down for that long?

big fan of Watts - got all the talent and potential in the world. I'd just like to see the next breed of demon come through with a real tough attitude, thats all.

a) It doesn't have to be head high for a bump to crunch someone.

b ) Lovett-Murray is a solid 95kg+ figure.... and Watts is probably 10-15kg lighter!

Maybe using the word "crunch" is too extreme, I don't know. But the bump was a fair and solid one.

yeah i know mate, maybe i, like alot of others see all of Jack's potential/talent and want him to be the complete package now!!!

Hopefully in a few years he'll be crusching players in between kicking bags for us!

I think Maric will play, he was the 23rd player last week and would feel fairly peeved if he felt that a lack of opportunity to play for Casey last week prevented him pushing harder for selection this week.

That's why i think it's between Morton and Bail. Chances are we are both wrong :)

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
