all this hype about getting knocked on the head again after coming back on the ground, why dont they just make a rule that once you've gone off and even if you pass the concussion test wear a helmet. it would have to lower the risk.

A lot of the medico experts say that wearing a helmet does nothing for protecting the head - just makes the player feel more comfy as he feels protected (placebo style)

well in that case it would probably be worse, give the player more confidence to run at a hard ball with no more protection. i stand corrected.

Fair difference between the hard helmets worn as safety devices and the soft ones in sports.

Obviously you can't go out there wearing a motorcycle helmet, there'd probably be 10 more concussions as a result.

It's true, the neck is the dangerous part, helmets in contact sports make you feel safer and use your head as a battering ram, helmets hard or soft aren't going to protect your neck.

has the afl ever done any studies to show either way if the helmet helps at all. might shut some of the media up if they start looking into something. just seems simple to me, padding around the head will be less of an impact on the head. and into regards on the neck not being protected, its the brain damage their worried about, not whiplash

A spinal cord injury can cause paraplegia, quadraplegia or death, not just whiplash.

I played rugby for a few years and our whole team wore helmets. There is no way that it's just a placebo effect. Imagine a clash of heads without helmets. And then imagine a clash of heads with helmets. Yes. it would still hurt. but the chance of being knocked out would be a lot lower.
