Bennell answers critics?

I know why several scribes here called for Bennell to go back to the twos but I am glad he didnt.

He put the afterburners on a few times and looked dangerous - I think he will be playing more and will present quite a challenge.

I was impressed.

I thought he provided much needed x-factor across half forward and really had a dip all day.

Definitely in our best 22 if he can maintain that form consistently.

I constantly said I did not want him dropped, and I am glad he got another go.

To say he is "definitely" in our best 22, well I am still not sure. There are many players who can be in our team, and many players currently injured, so he could be replaced. I guess it shows our depth is getting much better. All being said, at the moment he deserves to be ini our best 22 and if he continues to pllay as he is, he wont get dropped.

I liked his speed to attck the game and the opponents, and he put great forward pressure on today. He also had more impact with his possessions today. He played smarter, especially his short pass to Bruce in the last quarter, instead of bombing long into the forward line like so many others did.

I was also impressed with his leap, took a couple of good high marks.

I've been a big fan since day dot with this kid and have never at any stage wanted him dropped. He didnt go in hard last week, and its not the first time either. What we all gotta realise is not every player is Jonathan Brown. Bennell is young, light framed outside player. He crapped himself when he saw the big defender coming to crunch him as anyone would. What he needs to be taught is how to position his body in those marking contests so he isn't just going to get his yeah knocked off his shoulders.

why?

Because they have antiquated views on how to deal with the development of a young player?

Dropping him was never the answer.

He is in the start of his second season. Quite young and is progressing. Talk of wiping him of recent weeks and not making it is premature in the extreme.

Did not realise you were so defensive Spirit if Barassi!

Was not having a go at you, but if you got offended, well I am not sure what I need to say.

I was just stating that I like him as a player, but need him to continue his form. I guess we agree that he needs consistency to stay in the team.

Agree. And who is calling for Bennell to be Jonathan Brown? He just needs to go hard when its his turn to go.

I glad he played well on Sunday. He has not addressed the issue of timidity but he is a player with a promising set of skills.

How would you know? He played one effective Qtr where thankfully, he influenced the game.

Thats what we wanted from him. Thats how he played last year.

What he has dished up this year prior to yesterdays last Qtr, has been crap.

He needs to keep it up. Because there are other youngsters who deserve a game.

Has the critisism stung him enough to make the penny drop long term? We won't know for a little while till the dust settles, & he relaxes again. Then we'll see what he's made of.

I, personally see his talent & want him to not only succeed, but star. I hope your right, that he's been sorted.

Very true we need horses for courses his course is pressuring the defense swooping on crumbs taking on tacklers and snealing goals - Grimes, Warnock, Frwaley, Rivers are for going where angel sfear to tread in the back line.

Maybe I'm being a tad too sensitive ... In fact, I am! lol

I agree with E25.

Anyone who called for him to be dropped has no idea what they are talking about and have been sucked into antiquated group think over the best way to deal with young players.

Edit: It'd seem Schwabby does as well - when asked what was said to Bennell he replied "Absolutely nothing. He knew what he'd done. We didn't have to tell him a thing." (I'm paraphrasing)

Great game from Bennell yesterday.

I've really liked his position switch to the forward line, he adds some much needed dash to our attack.

It also free's up a half-back/back pocket position for another youngster to grab and make his own. With Cheney, Macnamara and Strauss all pressing their claims it should be interesting to see who wins the spot long term.

Q/ Do you 'Keyser Söze', think he knows of the Criticism he's received from the club supporters over that pullout, & do you think he responded to that critcism yesterday???

No one said anything about criticizing him to his face, but to spend time at Casey to learn some things.

What Cam is saying has a lot do with keeping the Demon family united, not devided over issues like this, & has to show leadership in a supportive way. I understand that, & can see that. He was also really saying, leave it to us, we'll sort it out inhouse. That was really good to here.

We'll watch closely as he goes about his footy for the rest of the season. I hope he continues his form of last year.

1) So you want to say it without saying it?

Leave doubt in the kid's mind as to where he stands?

A lack of communication leads to nothing good.

2) Alternatively you can tell him he has been dropped for a soft effort so that he dwells on it for weeks until he gets back into the side to redeem himself?

This is not how you build confidence and BELIEF.

3) Or failing that, you can drop him and specifically tell him that it is NOT because of him hearing footsteps.

Then the kid is still down, questions and doubts himself and whether the football dept is being honest with him.

4) The answer is to maintain faith in him that he will redeem himself and give him the soonest chance possible to show that.

If it becomes a worrying trend, then maybe you take a different tact.

No good can come from the other options.

Such a simple concept, but so hard for some to understand...

Not at all.

I don't think any of the players would be foolish enough to read this forum and I doubt it is a consideration for him.

Inside he knows he let himself and the club down in those moments and what matters is that he hardens up and doesn't let it happen again.

By picking him again the club said - we have confidence in you - you made one mistake but you have a chance for redemption take that chance - he did.

I am more interested in his total effort than one failing.

I thought he played 3 good Q's and 1 great Q yesterday. He was one of the few trying to be creative in the first half when adelaide had the corridor shut down.

Jamie is still learning but his pace gives us almost a second Flash & that is a great weapon on the MCG B)

Apparently, according to the Herald Sun, JB received votes. What a tremendous turn around after last week. For the record, I thought he was good against Collingwood, it was just that one infamous contest that I didn't appreciate.

Agreed.

A defining moment was when he saw he had Maric on his tail and instead of panicking he put on the afterburners and hit up Green, leading to Junior's goal.

He'll be ok, this kid. Belief is the biggest thing.

Such a simple concept, but so hard for some to understand...What a timid response, trying to insult when you were going so well with logic & rationale, then you showed your hurt. I'll buy you a band aid because someone criticized your favorite.

Anyone would think you were hurt by Barassi & Jordan if you had played under them? You sound like a player of the '80s the way you speak.

Lets see what the softly, softly approach has had on the lads (general public) down @ the nightclubs @ Southgate & King Street.

No self control nor discipline, just reactive.

NO one has said, lets hang the kid, merely a loss of privledges for a short time.

This way (publicly doing nothing) runs the risk of not really learning from his mistake & shows the others waiting for promotion, a poor example.

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
