Best players by position.

Still Waiting

Recommended Posts

1/2 fwd line; Lyon, Schwarz, Alan Johnson (gotta be in somewhere)

F fwd line ; Farmer, Neitz, Davey

Onballers; Stynes, Viney, Yze (see AJ above)

I/C Ingerson, G Lovett, White, Jakovich

some really hard omissions.

I can only remember Allen Jakovich on the bench once

it was out at Victoria Park, John Northey dragged him in the first Q

He came back on and kicked a bag. The last time we played at the Filths ground i think

We won it was a marvelous day!!!

I would always have Jacko on the ground. When he was "on" he was even more "on" than Jeff Farmer. Both were Brillianrt.

If only Jako didn't have such a crappy back-he would have kicked a Ton numerous times.

And when they were off.... they were abominable and destroyed the team. Saw it enough at Freo with the Wiz.

Loved them at their best. But the gap between their best and worst was the grand canyon. And you never know what you would get on the day. The day the Wiz blitzed the Pies in the 2nd half of a game after being putrid and dragged in the first half evidences the see saw output. In their later years there was too much of their worst and not enough of their best.

Both Farmer and Jako were indifferent trainers and Jako lifestyle off the ground did little to sustain him for a long football career

Guys this was only a hypothetical team. Mine is a combination of favourites, top performers and positional specialists.

It's my opinion and I am happy with it. Must admit a couple of faves got in slightly out of position.

Your suggestions are just that Old 55, I respect that and don't agree with some of what you say but hey it was just a bit of fun!! By the way did not suggest "White" in the backline, think you meant to say Wight!

Yes, maybe my side is top heavy or slow, or not enough "midfielders" etc but I would love to see this side take on some of the comps better combinations of the past.

Used to enjoy Flower vs Greig or Schimma. and what about Stynes Vs Madden S and J?

Neita at his best on some of the older f/backs like Dench and co would have been good too. Toddy running hard at everyone and the sublime skills of Lyon and Hardeman. How would Davey and Farmer have gone together, either side of Neita or Jacko??

This was simply one way of looking a little into the past. I would pick a very different team if I was picking purely best player in each position. ;)

The thread title is "Best players by position" ?

I agree it's just a discussion and your thread is a good topic for the off-season.

Our 22s are quite similar but let's look at the differences:

SW: White, Ingerson, Whelan, Yeats, S.Febey

Old: P.Moore, Gerard Healey, Wilson, Woewodin, Tingay

I'll go with mine thanks - 4 Brownlow medallists and Stephen Tingay.

If it was a poker hand I think I'd have you covered.

As you say - it's just an opinion ...

Keyser - Neita is in my backline.

Lyon is a 2 time All Australian CHB.. he was a gun Back early. He was the ultimate swing man, could play anywhere. Even got brownlow votes playing in the centre one match against Essendon.

Alan Johnson, Steve Febey, Anthony Ingerson, Sean Wight, David Neitz, Brett Lovett

I have a feeling that we have some very good backs on our list that could be contenders in a few years. I think we have the best backline and depth I have seen at our club for a very long time.

He was????

Lyon was an AA in 1993-95 as a HF. In his early career and at his peak I remember Lyon playing forward and not back at all. This is not to say that he was not good enough to play both ends of the ground but he definitely made hia mark up forward with little time up back. Hardly the swingman.

Lyon was 1989-90 All Australian CHB. Started his career as HFF, then moved back for at least 3 years, represented Victoria as a CHB on numerous occasions. Could well be argued that his career took of as a backman.

Was swung everywhere in his early years, especially under Northey, any hole that need filling, Lyon was the man, hence me calling him a swing man, because he certailny was.

You are correct Demon3. Lyon won his first b&f in 1990 playing mostly in defence. He was a very good CHB for a couple of years there.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
