Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Will be rookies 100%. sadly not with us, unless Meesen and Newton get offered a gig elsewhere.

Will be a handful of good kids picked up in this years rookie draft. Panos will be on everyones radar.

While a very low probability either will be picked up, certainly would be worth considering given our greatest need now appears to be forward depth.

I appreciate Joel McDonald is a sound addition to the list, will he be in our next grand final team?

He's 25.

Will Aaron Davey be there? He is a year older.

Again is there a reason why 16 clubs over looked him and all of a sudden we now have to have him???

Dont hype Matthew 'who' he was not good enough and is a speculative pick whoever gets him....

Take Joel any day...he is going to really give the team some much needed mature body playing in defence amongst all our up and comers.

Fair points.

I love the pre and post draft period, but the Panos case is another example (at least for me) of not getting too carried away with names thrown up as early draft picks on chat sites.

I accept your point on Joel - happy to see him in red and blue next year.

Yeah I was a little surprised that Panos didn't get drafted but he should get his chance in the rookie draft. There are a number of talented players who didn't get drafted who could prove handy pick-ups in the rookie draft.

The point about MacDonald being 25... he's just turned 25, so if he plays until he is 30, that is six seasons. And having just turned 25 and with 80 games under his belt, he should be coming in to his prime. The question 'will they be in the next premiership team?' is a moot point, because we won't have a premiership team if we don't gradually improve season by season. If we just chuck all the youngsters in to the team and wait for them to turn 26, they aren't suddenly going to win a premiership. We need to climb our way up the ladder, and having some quality 25- to 30-year-olds will help us do that.

16 clubs have spoken...

plenty of young guys have come off the rookie lists, bit early to discount, unless your a good judge.

We still need a key position forward.

Key position players need at least three years to develop and become a big asset to the team.

Whilst MacDonald may be part of our next flag, I'm not convinced he has the quality to play well once he's close to 30, and I think it's more important that we take a punt on a key position player than pick up a decent, but not brilliant, 25 y.o.

he's training with port and port have today just delisted another player so as to get a pick in the PSD. bound to use that on Panos to stop the GC from claiming him.

Perhaps one club has spoken. But hillie it could well be Cameron Cloke who is training with Port after an invitation. If anything, I'd say Port will rookie him if available.

West Coast - Tyson Stenglein has retired. So West Coast will also have a pick in the PSD.

Correct. Aaron Davey, Sam Mitchell, Dean Cox and Russell Robertson were four that the 16 Clubs said were not good enough.

Sorry to be a pedantic pain in the arse, but Sam Mitchell was not rookie listed. He was picked #36 in the 2001 draft. Interestingly pick #36 and #1 (Luke Hodge) were sent to Hawthorn, from Freemantle in exchange for Trent Croad and Luke McPharlin.... Hawthorn are still laughing about this one

However, to support your point that the rookie draft yields some very good players that the 16 clubs ignored in the national draft,

here's a few others

Mal Michael

James McDonald

Brett Kirk

Tadgh Kennelly

Darren Jolly

Max Rooke

Aaron Sandilands

Ben Rutten

Brad Sewell

Nick Maxwell

Mark Nicoski

Jason Porplyzia

Danyle Pearce

Dale Morris

Matthew Warnock

Matt Priddis

Austin Wonaeamirri

Why didn't we pick him up at 50 then?

The MFC obviously rated Fitzpatrick as a better bet than any tall left, so there is your tall forward.

And I have no idea how good MacDonald will be when he is thirty, but at 25, Pick 1 in the PSD is a good price for a pro with neat skills.

What interests me is how Panos gained the status of All Australian in the national under 18 carnival and yet five months later he's not considered in the best 60 youngsters drafted?

Uhhh.... cos he's one of the best NOW, but won't be in 3 or 4 years' time when they've all had a chance to develop.

There is no outstanding quality that he posesses that will make him succeed at AFL level.

He might at the next level, being SANFL, but he has less upside than the relatively slow and not-very-agile Serhat Temel.

He plays well, but he plays small, mobile & roaming around. He was very good @ U-18 level but i now think against opponents who would be taller & faster, he would not be a 1st or 2nd tall forward but yet another Matthew Bate.

It may well be that he'll become a defender.

Be careful you don't undersell Matthew Bate.

Why is it that so many supporters fail to recognize that Bate is actually a decent player?

No! Why is it that you've misinterpreted what I think?

Bate is a very good player, not a star, not yet, anyway, but becoming a regular & a key player in our team. But he's a 3rd tall.

Panos will be alike, & I think will be a very good footballer.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
