Fox sports coverage

Didn't think it was all that bad, a lot better than listening to it on the radio and listening to Andy Maher's banter in between picks.

Yeah, gee you'd hate to actually hear player selections.

I couldn't stand looking at Paul Connors and his smug face. Why anyone signs with him is beyond me. Likewise Pickering.

Pickering lost me immediately with his 'oh no I'm not nervous' as in 'no chance i'm way too awesome for that'

you could tell that woman was there asking stupid questions to the families because they thought 'hey we better make sure this program has an appeal to the mothers out there that might be watching' yeah well guess what dheads the mothers that are watching are watching because they are interested in football not because they want to know how scully's old girl feels about him paying his phone bill

/end rant

Very poorly presented, but overall I appreciate the attempt of trying to make it more of an event, as it deserves to be.

Last year we had to crowd around a computer to watch it, only to have it fail on us so it's better than that.

Is the draft on ? What is this I am watching

Just a crap presentation. Glad I don't pay for fox!

Very poor effort from Fox... Should've had video highlights on each pick!

I think everyone is missing the point. The draft is the hardest thing to televise in the footballing calander. no one wants to watch name getting read out after name.. long winded and boring. i think they mixed it up and the telecast was for those who did not want to listen to the whole draft. got regular updates, great info from Shifter and got out and spoke with family and coaches. For everyone here who did not like it, there will be plenty who thought it was done well. And i am one of them.

missing the point is the fact that it is a boring event but those who actually want to watch it choose to do so, to actually see the draft read out in the order of picks and see who their club select. With the odd interview of players and coaches thrown in between rounds. What Fox did was quite embarassing for all involved. The reverse order top 10 was a lame and uinsipid attempt to make the event seem exciting and suspenseful.

umm the overwhelming reason people tuned in what TO SEE WHAT PLAYERS THEIR CLUB HAS GOT

they managed to completely stuff that part of it up which is about as fail as you can get, simple as that

not a FOX employee by any chance are you?

no not all, no vested interest in it one bit. But i am not that narrow minded to suggest that everyone loves the draft like the tragic footballing supporters, some like different formats. get over it!

If you don't like the original format, you wouldn't have tuned in.

Lets be honest, only hardcore losers like our good selves enjoy watching and following the draft, and we would have been very happy to sit there and watch the reaction of clubs and players as names are read out. In between rounds, it would have been good for them to interview either a player or a coach of some sort, do a proper rundown of the players selected, and then get back to it.

Draft night felt like a reminiscing session at a balls club!

S.E.N I must was great, Foxtel are FU#K@N Shitt.

I listened to SEN all night, and I thought it was just OK. They continued to return to the top 10 without providing information on who was being drafted in later rounds, Leon Harris was their only 'expert' and he didn't seem to have a decent understanding of players once the draft went past about 35.

Sounds like it was a whole lot better than FOX though.

I turned off after Dunstall asked Scully, "What are your plans with the money?"

What kind of question is that?

Yeah, that wasn't necessary as far as I'm concerned.

The person I felt for most apart from us idiots that watch the coverage is Shifter Sheehan

The man lives for this day , knows everthing about every player, strengths weakness, family history, what the clubs want etc.

He would have had detailed notes on every player waiting for his chance to show his stuff

poor bastard got stuck on a panel with dunstall lynch etc talking about back in the day and anything but what was going on.

even worst for him he had his back to the action you could tell he was [censored] off

he looked like virgin who finally thinks he is geting some action and then his only rubber breaks

Haha. Agree with "Shifter", he was eager to listen to the calls from the clubs. But at the same time mindful of the telecast. Between a rock and a hard place. Looked uncomfortable at times. They missed the big moments regarding Luke Ball at pick 18 and 30. You could see Sheehan was listening intently at essendons picks 24 and 26 too. When Carlisle and Colyer got called out.

If you don't like the original format, you wouldn't have tuned in.

wrong.. i didnt like the original format, long and boring, couldnt care less what other clubs got.. i tuned in because it was basically going to be a highlights package of the live event.. and i liked it.. thats just me though.. each to their own.

Anyway, what a great night for the demons, and i had a mate who went and he said the best thing about the night was how well the club was represented, the only players from any club were the demons.. about 14 of them there watching and ready to give support.

Love this club!

also why did AD have to read out the top 10? He just loves his face in the lime light doesnt he? The clubs should have read out their own players...

Must admit i agreed with Patrick Smith

Worst sporting production ever

SEN was ok though

Dunstall other classic idiotic question was asking Tom about draft camp, was he nervous? the interviews etc. Tom pointed out that because he was injured he did not attend it. Great research there Jase, not!!!!!

For everyone here who did not like it, there will be plenty who thought it was done well. And i am one of them.

..... found anyone who agrees with you yet?.

How could Fox seriously call that a live telecast of the 2009 AFL Draft? All they did was keep viewers away from the draft until it was all over.

Does anybody have a spare copy of Lindsay Gilbee's autobiography? Unfortunately I think I missed the best bit when I called a mate to try to find out who we'd drafted.

Also it was thrilling to see Luke Power's parents swimming pool and to hear that he has done very well up in Brisbane, while picks were being ignored. A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with the draft, is that it moves so quickly, its hard to give a detailed review while it is in motion. In the NFL there is 15 minutes between each pick, so plenty of time for analysis and speculation.

But at least try. Give us something. It doesnt have to be much, just a comment here and there, good picks, surprises and whatnot, rather than giving us a draft retrospective while the 2nd round is being called out.

And [censored] Dunstall asking Scully if he would have preferred to go to Richmond, the club he supported as a kid. Firstly, totally inappropriate question to ask a kid who has just been draft to a club, I doubt Dunstall would have asked the question if Scully had been headed to Hawthorn. And secondly, of course he would have preferred to go to the club he barracked for, but of course he is not going to say that, so why bother asking the question?

Next year I think I wlll be tuning into the radio coverage.

I think there should be a longer break between rounds.

Keep the focus on the individual picks as they come through and then have the analysis, prediction of upcoming picks and conversation between rounds

Worked out fine on the radio, decent informed commentary on SEN, good timing between rounds.

Having not seen the foxtel coverage I honestly can't fathom how they could possibly get it so wrong.

Sounds like the footy coverage is run by old footy boys who think they can do what they clearly can't.

The whole thought process sounds flawed.

This would have been right up Clinton Grybas' alley. He would have insisted a focus on individual picks as they were happening, rather than talk about ol' glory days of when Lynchy got drafted and when Dunstall was linked to Fitzroy...

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
