Any room for him in a back pocket, i.e. Whelan's role? I had Cheney earmarked for that spot, but I wonder if Petterd could make that one his own. He attacks the ball and the man very aggressively and has the running capacity as well, I actually think he'd be the perfect Whelan replacement.

Petterd's big issue, and it would have been discussed at length during the preseason, has been finding a position of his own. When Sylvia was disciplined and suspended for round 1 Petterd took his spot on a forward flank and did ok. In reality though, Petterd's best position is as a half back. The problem is, as you highlight with Strauss, there are other players that the club prefer down back - Bennell, Grimes, and soon to be Strauss. Add Garland who can play tall or small and there was deemed to be no room for Petterd. Bailey wants elite kicks coming out of defence and this was another cross against his name.

I like Ricky, as he's very courageous and across half back can find a bit of the ball, but he's now superfluous to our needs. I reckon he could make a position for himself in a young GC side that will want some experience and I wouldn't discount the fact that he's a Queenslander.

I'm not convinced. Is there room for him on the HB-line? We seem to have a few guys putting their hands up to play there, like Grimes, Bennell, Strauss, etc.

Could Petterd make it as a tagger?

What would people take at the trade table?

Who is Strauss I havnt yet seen him on the half back line?

I agree totally Nasher well said Whelan is on the way out and Cheney has ot yet done enough to cement a spot in the back half.

he played well there on Saturday, however I'm not convinced yet long term that's the right spot for him... I've got a feeling that he'll end up in the midfield to be honest, that's still a while off yet though...

he's played all his games for Melbourne this season up forward, and that's probably only the 2nd decent game he's played... needs to be more consistent if he's going to play in our forward line...

Did take a few contested marks and got a decent amount of the ball, I was refering to his first half. although 2 goals and 15 - 22 touches a game id be happy with.

Was his best game for the year, did some special things. Hopefully will continue with it now and I think he can.

Remember he nearly died, that would scare anybody and would take you a bit to get your bullet proof confidence back. Expect him to grow.

I've watched Petterd closely this year as I didn't no what all the hype was about. I think he has potential, he's fearless, a strong mark, good handballer, kicking is ok and he keeps presenting. I hope we keep him, I think he'll turn into a more than handy player.

He plays slightly taller than his height, and he nullified Wirrapanda a treat on Saturday.

But the thing I like the most is his lateral movement, he harrasses in the forward line well because of his quick feet and mind.

Not sure where he will end up but he can play AFL footy.

What I liked about him against WC is he's got the mongrel in him. He adds toughness and hardness to a forward line full of ball players. St Kilda have demonstated this year the value of forwards who play like defenders, who harrass and niggle, who can keep the ball in the forward line, who make defenders look over their shoulders to see if they're coming. I liked that quality in Petterd, though it looked raw& undeveloped, and may have come about mainly because of the emotion associated with Jimma. If he thinks about it and hones it and makes it a deliberate and permanent part of his game, then he'll add something to the forward line that no other can, and make himself a valuable part of the team. He could also well be the one to shut down an opposition "quarterback" when it's needed (it was certainly needed against the Filth, Heath Shaw killed us because he was hardly ever under pressure).

Sometimes I really wonder if I have been watching the same games as half of you!?! I can't count the number of times I have seen Ricky on the Members wing surrounded by 2 or 3 opposition and put in a super effort to hold them up or lay a tackle and bring the ball carrier to the ground. His second and third efforts have been tremendous, and his goal kicking is a far sight better than that of half our other forwards.

Let's not forget this is a kid who at this time last year suffered a life-threatening tension pneumothorax which no doubt hampered his pre-season. I am really looking forward to him proving his critics wrong by bulking up over the off-season and really becoming a target down forward or even moving into the midfield with a bit of speed training.

His development was put on hold for a while when he almost died, but he is now back on track.

A few people should have a read back over their past comments on Ricky and have a rethink.

I've always thought Ricky was going to be a player after his outstanding debut, and he has obviously had a few setbacks, but he was fantastic today and when we get all our forwards up and running and he is getting the other teams 3rd or 4th defender each week, i think we will see more games like these.

Great stuff from Ricky.

Our forward line is coached very well by Mahoney; several times Petterd, Jurrah, and Robbo had one-on-one contests with space to work in.

really stepped into Sylvia's spot today, the more "mongrel" we can get out of younger guys the better, as we need a few on these guys that will make the opposition dfenders just think about dashing out of defense all the time.

Would be great if he can take the next step into the middle, but if he can have games like today in the forward line 15 times a year, we will be a much better side

Unbelievable the criticism by some people. The guy has put barely a foot wrong.

I love how some of the early posts suggested he's no good by foot.
