me not knowing that Jurrah hadn't nominated in time is trivial, Jurrah not getting his forms in for the National Draft is a serious stuff up. That said, I've seen eveery casey game this year and he looks pretty good. If he can stack on 15 kgs in 3 years, i htink he'll make it.

Because barracking for Melbourne is about hope. I think it's safe to say that every Melbourne supporter hopes to see Jurrah starring for the club. So we put it out there, we talk him up and we cross our fingers and hope like bloody hell he makes it.

Personally a forward line boasting Watts, Jurrah, Butcher, Martin, Maric and Wonaemirri gives me goosebumps, but hey, that's just me!

Just on this, Martin's defensive capabilities are his strongest attributes, personally I'd keep him down back. He's quick, tall and one hell of a spoiler. He, Garland and Warnock are all developing into much the same player. This is a credit to the recruiting and to Sean Wellman. We've recognised that tall, pacy forwards are the go in modern day football (the Franklin's and Pavlich's) and therefore styled a backline that can account for this shift in the game. We're also developing key defender depth down there. Clearly one of the stronger areas of our squad to date.

The beauty of our boys is that they could play on just about any size too. The slow Anthony Rocca type forward, who sits in the goal sqaure is becoming a thing of the past. It's only height and pace these days.

I'd add Jetta in there as well. The future looks very bright. As long we we sign our uncontracted guys up mid way through next season, then in theory, GC shouldn't be able to touch them.

Oh, you're not the only one. Fremantle and Port Adelaide brought about the demise of Fitzroy. If the AFL had put more money into saving them instead of setting up these new clubs, the Roys might even still be around.

I just hope we don't loose another club to bring in a club like GC, which is likely to attract about 10,000 (if they're lucky) a game and potentially fold in a decades time.

Furthermore, I doubt that Western Sydney will go ahead. There's simply not enough interest in those parts. The Swannies can't even get enough along to games, let alone a new club based in the NRL heartland. The AFL would be down right stupid to go ahead with those plans and if they do, it'll backfire.

16 clubs are worse off just so that we can add another club to a geographical area where nobody gives two hoots about AFL, and all for the sake of making more money from TV rights.

No you're not the only one. I find myself hoping all the draft picks they are to receive will come to little if nothing. Why don't they just give them a premiership?

And as for Western Sydney, that to me seems like the AFL seriously over-extending itself. Sydney itself has enough issues let alone a new 'franchise' in the west.

But the AFL is determined so we'll find out.

I for one think this club will have some modicum of success and actually get a bit of a following up there. There is a LOT of interest in footy in QLD...far more than New South. A lot of expat Victorians have made sure footy is respected above the NSW border. It NSW that is really the quagmire and its West Syd that ought to be looked upon as a much loner term project ..as a VFL level team and feeder ( more or interest ) to the Swans.. Let them have synergy as a united fron instead of comatants.This is where I see the AFL as having totally screwed things.

why do people here talk about liam jurrah like he is going to be a long term successful player. he was overlooked in the national draft right? which means clubs didnt rate him in the top 80 players in his draft. odds are stacked heavily against him

He didnt apply for the National Draft. He wasnt convinced until right before it to apply, and then didnt get the paper work in on time. Then applied to Preseason Draft and wolah! From what I was told, he wouldve gone in the 40s had he been available in the ND. I've got no expectations of him personally. It'd be nice if he made it, but I'm not holding my breath as there are many factors working against him.

On Petterd, I was worried about this earlier in the year and brought it up. I seem to remember he signed on for another year, thus making him ineligible to be poached?

Spencer would be a big loss, due to our poor ruck situation. We should be elevating and signing him up properly.

The success of sport up here is questionable at the best of times, people don't go to games which will make a huge problem for the AFL. And of all the codes the AFL is still the least popular, both at junior and professional levels. It took a Premiership on the back of multiple finals appearances to get Sydney to pay attention to the Swans and they have been here for thirty years.

Now I have been anti a Western Sydney team for a long time. It is an already crushed market. People argue that we are big enough and have enough people to be able to handle a second team, but when the majority of the population don't give two shits about the code, largely because there is no grass roots structure and supporter base growth, then size really isn't going to matter one little bit.

There has been minimal AFL expansion into primary schools and very few junior programs (Auskick or otherwise) at all in this city, and still the kids from out west don't grow up wanting to pick up a Sherrin. There is no reason why at some point in the future it can't work but more, a hell of a lot more, ground work needs to be done. Right now, it just feels monumentally rushed.

Brad Miller may be an interesting one, probably too old, and loves the Melbourne Footy Club. But with Watts in the side, Jurrah starring and possibly John Butcher wearing Red and Blue, at 27 it could be close to the end for him at Melbourne. Yet he could probably get a 3 year contract from the Gold Coast at a good tick.

I realise that this is the hope and it is a very exciting hope, but you are jumping the gun on both of these.

Brad miller is my biggest concern.

We need him for the next 5 years and as soon as JW+LJ+..... start coming through miller will only get better. It would be a sad day if we lost the big #7. He is a chance of being captain up there if he wanted it assuming no stars are enticed up north. tall power forwards are hard to come by and GC17 would jump at getting an established one.

agreed they need time, time in the seniors ,bennell and morton were thrown straight in, ditto for grimes barring injury, as i have said in previous thread Bailey will not hide the kids , give them a rest yes, even if jurrah isnt ready next year Watts, butcher is enough tall timber, robbo play tall, then three smalls, keep miller in the seconds or trade him, we are probably seeing his best now, yes he gives his all but not enough to keep out the new twin towers
