Comrades.

OK, his kicking was wayward at times, but today I could understand why he was retained on the list.

Your thoughts?

The main positive is that he provided a contest, and held on to a few marks. Too often this year we have gone forward and had our attackes repelled because we couldn't hold on to our marks. But Juice put in a good, solid effort, and hopefully he can keep it up in the next few weeks!

You could see when he missed that shot from right in front that he knows he is fighting for a spot in the side.... It is just nerves at the moment because every behind means he is one step closer to being sent back to Casey.... He is a confidence player and now that he has been given a shot and kicked a couple of goals, he needs to be given a run of 5+ games to show DB what he has got to offer....

Juice is a target and can take a grab..... We cannot disregard this fact!

He was great today.

Had at least 7 shots on goal, 2.4 and one out on the full.

He may have had another shot that fell short, so that would be 8 shots on goal.

He took a couple of great marks, and most importantly contested a few others that broke open a pack and we got at least one goal from (Jetta on the goal line.)

I thought he pressured well.

A good step forward for Juice today.

Have not been a fan but I thought he worked pretty hard today and chased and tackled. He provided a contest and importantly held most of his gettable marks. Many of the games I saw him play last year he got himself into a postion to win a marking contest and spilled the pill. Good to see him hold a few.

Retains his spot but will need to keep working hard. He will need to keep working as he was probably pitted against one of the weaker back-lines in the comp today.

Juice just needs to improve his kicking. He needs to kick those goals that matter on the run or under pressure. I still thought he played brilliantly today, and made a great addition to the team despite all the fuss about him being terrible. He took 6 marks and laid 4 tackles. It is the best game I have seen him play since at least 2007, if not ever.

he needs to be a damaging forward. Could you see Newton in the forward line in the future with, Robbo, Watts, Jetta, Jurrah, Bate, Miller, Pettard, Wonaeamirri and so on. Now is the time for Newton to stand up and be in our best forward 6, because if the future is bright with the kids, he just wont cut it!

Yeah, he does make a contest when we kick it inside 50 though, and missed a easy set shot straight in front, but then kicked a goal on the run about 50 seconds later. I think Newton has the pontential to become a very good player. Our forward line is looking good for the future. I`m sure Newton,Watts and Jurrah will be a very important part of the forward line in the future as well.

Could easily have ended up with 4-5, that one from dead in front 20 out was a shocker, then he drilled the turnover 30 seconds later on the run from 50. Simple fact for me is that we're struggling in the forward line and the guy had half a dozen serious shots at goal. A couple of times towards the end of the game the ball should have gone to him as well, one in particular where i think it was Bennell went deep in the right pocket towards Miller, when Juice was free 30 out dead in front wasn't the best decision. He presented well, he stays in for me.

Gave us another target up forward today which we've been badly needing.

Problem is he does the difficult things and then messes up the easy stuff. Needs to improve his kicking for goal if he wants to become a damaging forward.

Leave him in the side and let's see what the kid can do because he's got a few tricks.

Agree for now but when the others come back. unless he is at 110%, he'll be the first one out.

Biff,

If he had kicked a few more today he would have been rather damaging for us. The mere fact that he only kicked 2 for us with the opportunities presented meant that he was slightly on the other side of the ledger IMO. We had a similar stanza of footy against the Hawks in that pre-season game where we kept pushing when under the pump and Newton killed us. Today we got over the line and Juice slotted one on the run after a Richmond mistake (lucky). As far as your point about him being on the list goes I can understand also that we needed some insurance with Newton but I doubt he will ever transcend that status unfortunately.

The guy is a dud. Fools gold if ever I've seen one.

Fools gold indeed.

Can take the odd mark here and there, but he played against rubbish today, and I saw him fluff at least one contest where he really should have gone in harder. Maybe that's just the way he goes about it, but he always seems like he couldn't care less about anything but his own performance. Lazy or bored, or maybe both?

Will stay in the side for now, and hopefully we can pump up his tires a bit and maybe the Gold Coast will have a nibble in 2010?

I should add that, to his credit, he has gotten a lot better with his defensive pressure.

This is Newton bashing purely for the sake of it. Credit where credit is due his performance today was a marked improvement on previous. His pressuring was as good as you will see from a key forward. He should have kicked 5 goals and even though he didn't we would not have won the game had he not played today as he offered a true target where previously we have not had one.

He probably will not make it but I am willing to encourage more such performances and hope he continues to improve with games and confidence rather than write him off. As long as she shows the endeavour he showed today.

The only reason he got a game is because the comedy festival is on.....what a joke. He simply is not up to it. PERIOD. Take off your eye patches.

Maybe but who else can take his spot? He is a tall target we need.

Watts is not ready nor Jurrah. We need a target, Juice is our man for now

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
