I think we don't want the negative spin from the club, that's all. It is unhelpful, unprofessional in a sporting environment, and yes, it promotes mediocrity and a basis for copping out. Don't give me crap about simply telling it like it is. Sometimes its wise to shutup and get on with it, even if it's hard or seemingly impossible.

I have a hard time holding it against Stynes for that comment. I can see why it would be perceived as waving the white flag, but I doubt anyone in the entire world of footy believe the result will be any different anyway. I think the link that has been drawn between the president's expectations (or even the footy boss or the coach's), and the effort that is to be applied by the footy department across the board is tenuous at best.

For me it's just an honest assessment of where we're at, and it's one I find pretty hard to dispute.

There is nothing "definitive" in sport, which is why you play for the moment, because nobody can predict what will happen in 2-3 years time. This is why I object to comments from Stynes and Connolly that we're 2-3 years away from being a contender.

Honestly, if they're saying that we're 2-3 years away from being a contender, its simply an honest assessment. We all know the club/team is well behind the eight ball. If anything, we're probably further away, such as 3-4 years from being a contender for the premiership. Statements like these whilst honest are not in anyway, shape or form - accepting mediocrity. They simply wouldn't stand for that. Why would Stynes, Connolly & Co. take on challenges in turning this club around in the first place.

What sort of evidence is there to support the assertion that because we're realistic about where we're at off-field (we're not a powerhouse like Collingwood) and on-field (we're a long way off teams like Geelong and Hawthorn) it means that we will not strive to do our very best very day?

If anything it's just as likely to have the opposite impact - we know we're a long way off the pace and we have to work very hard to get where we want to be.

People, here's a man who loves the club so much he invests what spare time he has in trying to rebuild it for free. i think that it degrades the fact that we still want to make finals next year

it obviously wont happen, but we should all believe that it can

we should let people decide for themselves how good the club is, three month before the pre season cup even starts...however, we are being told how crap we are before some clubs have even started training

we dont need a big spin, but i just think it is a shame that we have this attitude of wanting to only win 4 games so we get pick 1 and pick 2

But if you asked every single AFL supporter, expert, commentator, follower, official, school kid out there. 99% of them would say that Melbourne will not make the finals in 2009.

we should be given a choice as to what we hope or what we think this club will achieve on the field

apart from being honest, what does it achieve apart from potentially losing possible members/sponsors/supporters
