Definately. We caned the Crows, and got the Roos the next week. Its history now the Crows went on to win back to back.

Who did we play in the semis inbetween those 2 games? Was it St Kilda?

I reckon our 2000 side would have beaten alot of premiership teams in the 90s, only Essendon were unstoppable and were never going to be beaten. Didn't we score 100 points or more in about 9 or 10 games in a row (It might have been less, but my mind tends to exaggerate these types of things). In 1994 we had one of the most awesome forward lines ever, consisting of Lyon, Jakovich, Schwarz, Pike & Charles (just imagine if we hadda had Neitz in there also!!). But the prelim was a case of the unstoppable force vs the immovable object, and WC had an even better defence.

That is right Oxxx, Glen Jackovich was in superb form then and the great Ox didn't get a sniff. Stinga was hot to trot that year. We were up against it against WC but only one win from the GF. We were close. 2000, well we got there and had a chance, but the Bombers were too good.

Would it be fair to say that on occasions, the missing ingredient we've had for a flag is luck? I mean you look at the Geelong side this year, very few major injuries to key players, and it's something that frustrates the hell out of me. What about the great 2000 Bombers side? They had something like 2-3 changes through the whole season, how would they have done if they lost Lloyd and Hird for the year?

We've been effed in the A when it comes to have a chance at a premiership, always cut down when it was just within reach. '98 is a closest i've seen us come in terms of our quality compared with the competition, no way did Adelaide deserve that cup!

Couldn't agree more. We beat 'em by what, ten goals?

Hi all,

I'm just curious, since I missed out on the 90's having only been properly introduced to AFL around 2000 (lucky charm, I was), with all this hype about Franklin and so on, I had a look back and noticed that David Schwartz closed in on 3 goals a game, and managed 15 brownlow votes playing alongside Garry Lyon in 1994, which was also the season he played just his 50th game.

Then there were two (Three?) knee reconstructions in rapid succession, and he never got back to that level, is what I understand happened.

Anyone care to fill in some details? Some nostalgia to pass on, memories of the days when...

We were a real chance to win a Flag in '95-Make no mistake. The Ox did his Knee during Pre-Season on a Bodgy Ground near the Junction oval. I just remember being Gutted.

the Team didn't make the Finals. Carltank "won" the flag. (Their means of winning are always questionable) Neil Balme would have been so frustrated. The ox would have Rivalled Carey & Glen Jakovich, i have no doubt.

The Fact he came back after 3 Reco's Puts him into Legend Status

We were a "real" chance until the season actually started. We lost the first six games of the year and then lost the last 4 games. Finishing with 9 and 13. In reality we were not a show at all.

After being knocked out of the 1994 finals in unceremoniously in straight sets, Carlton (now Visybank) were set for revenge and monstered the competition savagely that year and finished 18 an4 at the end of the H&A four games clear of second.

Yes Yes I remember all that RR-My point was that if the Ox had Played the season like a Carey or Jakovich we were a Big Chance. We lost the First six Games because the Ox wasn't there!! How Many Brown paper Bags were Handed out by "TheCArlton Crew" pre '95

You could only hope WYL.

That was the year that Jako, Tingay, Prymke and Charles also went down. So the wheels had well and truly fallen off and while the Ox was a factor there was more to it.

And I can attest that Visy had eight environmental management executives who all just happened (by chance) to play for Carlton.!

Wasn't it up at Albury at Lavington Oval? Or was that the third time he did it?

The second one was at the G against Sydney if memory serves me correct.

There was a thread not so long ago that had something to do with ranking your top 5 heart-breaks as a demons supporter...

Of the generation that have been supporting from about the mid nineties:

Obviously Broady ranked number 1.

2002 semi-final against Adelaide was up there. Trapper's finest footballing hour.

And I think Schwarta probably ranked second in amongst all the others.

We should have a look for that thread sometime... Was a good one.

1987 Prelim will always be no 1 Heartbreak no matter what decade you discuss, but yes it would be good to get that thread Back up and running

Tingay is underrated on this site.

Agreed... I put him above Thompson, minus injuries... One of our best genuine mids if not the best, in the same way Ox was our best CHF.

Couldn't disagree more. Broady HAS to be the biggest heartbreak. All other considerations are secondary, including premierships, when it comes to the lives of the players themselves. But apart from that, yes the '87 prelim has stood the test of time as an incident that left scars hat will last a lifetime.

The only good reason for being born in the 80s, as far as I'm concerned: I missed it.

Broady's Tragedy did not happen on the Football Field. It was a completely separate incident. Could have happened to any of us.

I miss the Fire Engine as we all do but The 87 Prelim will always for me be the no 1 Football Tragedy..

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
