As much as I think he would make a good forward, and he's played there before, he's done so well for us in defence that he should be kept there now. Let him and Martin and Warnock and Rivers etc. gel together and become a defensive unit, rather than a rabble.

Our key defensive posts prospects look good and that gives me some confidence going into the future. Keep them together and build a understanding. We look like a rabble atm cause we are but things turn around quick. I bet you Hawks supporters in '04 would think they'll be no where near it come '08.

Don't forget, Jacey, we really only need 3 of the 190+cm backs to take on the opposition talls, if indeed the opposition of the day is playing 3 talls. If we try to load Garland, Warnock, Rivers and Martin into the backline, we are too tall for the oppositions runners and crumbers.

Rather than drop one of them, and because we don't have key position forwards, until Watts is weened, then Garland is the obvious choice IMO.

Didn't Garland play on Farmer in one game?

That only leaves Warnock and Martin, plus Rivers to take the third tall.

Yep, that's right. Wheatley can also take the 3rd tall. My preference is to develop Dunn into taking a third tall to add to his kitbag of capabilities, as Bruce had to do in the past. I like Wheatley to be more a utility player and use his pace and drive. Garland can try out at CHF, but also play back if absolutely necessary.

Rivers unlikely to be fit (hope thats wrong) and replaced by Bate.

Rhino - are you just speculating or is Rivers actually not due to be ready until after the 2009 season begins?

He's an automatic selection if fit. It surprises me that he's not in some of the teams already listed above.

I agree that Wheatley's better off playing further up the ground, but don't think Dunn is suitable for the 'third tall' role.

You could be right, Rogue. But if that's right I wonder what the future role of Dunnie will be be. If he remains the new Godfrey, his future is clouded. If he was a forward he should have grasped a position there considering the poor state of our forward line this year.

Why?

If Rivers is fit, he will play.

I want to know if its on public record that Rivers is currently on track to be ready for round 1 next year or the club has stated he will be available by round 4 (for example).

I can't find the information anywhere.

I am not an optimist for players when they have had OP for 12 months or more.

I agree if fit Rivers is in the side......if fit. Make that fully fit. Its disturbing how much footy he has missed.

I have not seen a public or reliable statement on where his fitness is at and when he will be back. At this point, I think any announcement of just when he will be back is going to be subject to......

It will be interesting just where he plays when he does come back given what has evolved up back.

In between the lovers’ tiff above, thanks RR.

I just wanted confirmation on his status. Guess we won’t know anything until the preseason is completed. Fingers crossed. If he gets through it unscathed, then he’s a sure-start.

There’s plenty of room for him up back. Bell/Bartram either move forward or out. Its unfortunate he’s been out for so long. People forget how good he was 2004/2005. I don’t like him up forward. Others do.

YM & realist, can you two sort it out? You make a great couple.

We trade right this team is very possible.

Stuff the 5 year plan when we can have this next year.

Maybe have a crack at Kerr while we are at it and the rebuild is complete and we go give it a shake.

Get Brown, R.Warnock, Kerr and Cousins eh?

What a brilliant idea I wonder how nobody else has thought of it yet

Re: Garland in the forward line - I don't want to see CG play anywhere but on the opposing main forward target. We need him to get every bit of experience possible to try and become a long-serving elite backman like M.Scarlett for example. We have lacked a good full back for some time now and as a result the elite forwards of the comp have consistently torn us new ones and it has cost us many, many games of football. Martin is also a very good prospect, just love the way he spoils marks like a basketballer putting a block on a shot at goal.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
