Dean Bailey Appreciation Society ("DBAS")

I am super impressed with Dean Bailey.

Probably one of the major criticisms of Neale Daniher was the fact that he persevered with players whose behaviours did not reflect the club we wanted to be, whether those behaviours were attitudinal or skills-based. We wanted ruthlessness.

On the other hand, Dean Bailey seems to have an almost uncompromising attitude that the club and its players will do things the way he wants them done, or he will drop them. Key position youth is developing at a rate better than I can ever remember, because it is clear that Dean is focused on being a great teacher.

Take Nathan Jones. He will learn so much from being dropped after having had his most possessions all year. Jonesy is clearly a competitive beast, so this will be a tremendous opportunity for him to understand what is expected from him. The same thing happened to CJ, who had to earn a game, and Miller, who was backed to the hilt by Bailey. Having had the opportunity to speak to a few of the players recently, I know also that Dean demands "smarts" from his players and makes the players do substantial homework on the opposition.

Where Ross Lyon dropped 2 players for 1 week on the back of pressure from the media, Dean Bailey has gone about doing things his own way quietly and effectively. I know we're not there yet, and of course I see some weakness in Dean. But as long as the club "sticks fat", I think we have an extremely exciting opportunity in the next few years.

Include me in for the time being.

I've been a critic of DB, and remain so.

It's the easiest job in the world to be a coach of a side that has no expectations of winning. Let's see how he's going in years 2 and 3, when there's pressure on the team to win, and the wolves are out.

Three years out of the finals is something that this club can't financially afford.

That's NQR your opinion. The team and coach go into each week expecting to try their best in order to win and get the 4 points.

For the record, I'm in also Choko.

I'm not talking about the coach and players' expectations. I'm referring to the greater football world, ie; media, supporters, board members.

Bailey has yet to experience any of this pressure. Matty Knights was copping it from the media and supporters earlier in the year, even though he's a 1st year coach. To date, Bailey has had it easy.

Could not be further from the facts.

Bailey has indeed been under the blow torch by the media particularly after the first two rounds when we got flogged. At least there are some smarter souls in the media who actually realise the train wreck that Bailey has inherited and could at least understand what he is trying to do with seriously undermanned youth ridden list. The smarter media hacks realise where things are at with MFC.

In addition, Bailey has had to contend with sub AFL training facilities with a completely disstabilised Board structure and Football executive and the Club's financial position and future being dissected in the media daily. MFC in its 150 year has been a complete rabble off the field and a media laughing stock in many respects.

Knights has yet to experience any of that pressure.

Hasn't Bailey had it easy! Amazing.

As far as the first 2/3rds of the season goes... he has an emphatic pass mark from most people... myself included... But one fact remains.

He has 2 wins on the board. Clearly this is not his fault. But I will offer him more credence when he starts showing signs of breeding a team that strikes fear into the hearts of teams, and supporters alike...

This will clearly take another year of bottoming out IF WE'RE LUCKY. So with a bit of luck, he'll be given the opportunity to stick around after the pain of 2008.

The thing that gives me hope is how he's handled himself in one of the worst seasons by a single team in years... If he's this resolute and strong now, imagine him when we're a finals chance?

Go you good thing DB.

You posted, "of a side that has no expectations of winning" - now how on earth is it meant to be interpreted as to what you are now referring to?

no expectations ?

and i thought YM's constant degrading of Cameron Bruce was the boards most biased critic

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

The Demons head back to Melbourne after an embarrassing loss to the Dockers to take on the Magpies at the MCG on Kings Birthday. With a calf injury to Lachie Hunter and Jacob van Rooyen possibly returning from injury who comes in and who goes out?
