Where's Garry?

Now I love Garry as much as the next Demon supporter, but it's time he cut back on some of his mediastar commitments and really got on board with the Demons. With the help of some competant business types he could make a massive difference to the health of the club. This club needs some PASSION (not to mention a home, time to develop a reasonably sound list and more members) Now I reckon Garry could help with all these.

Im getting the impression Garry prefers the role of clandestine facilitator !! I sense he's very much in the thick of it..but in a liaison manner.

Just an impression

I agree that he has from all you read been working very hard behind the scenes with Greg Healy and Stynes, however it is only Jimmy that is the 'face' of this push for President.

Make no mistake Garry puts us out there in the media more than most too, certainly more than guys like Schwarz et al.

Yes..dont forget we have a couple of media outtles called.. Footy Classified and TFS ..lol :)

gary almost operates as a consultant. Can sit in and advise on on-field issues as well as off. I think this is a good role for him and allows him to continue in the media without all those conflict of interest accusations etc. etc.

I don't want to question your motives about starting a thread titled "Where's Garry?" but this is of continual annoyance to many Demon fans who realise that Garry is a good media performer but has no experience in the areas you mentioned.

How could he help us secure a 'home'? - he isn't trained as a contractor to the best of my knowledge.

How could he help us develop a 'sound list'? - he has no experience in recruitment.

And, apart from pleading on his varying media commitments that you want him to cut back from, how would he go about getting more members signed up?

No wonder Garry gets fed up with MFC supporters who question his allegiance - you are asking things of him he cannot deliver.

There is no messiah, or quick panacea, to cure what ails this club.

Garry will do the small amount that he can, but threads like this are pointless attacks on him and disingenuous to the serious plight of the club.

I'll answer your perceived points one by one. Securing a home: He's a proven "people person" and obviously believes strongly in the idea as he's been helping with the project already.

Sound list: He knows footballers. If he can't help in a small way with finding and nuturing talent I'd be very surprised, not to mention helping to create a culture of respect for the jumper (something that if Sunday's jumper and player's effort is any guide is sorely lacking)

more members: Are you seriously saying that having someone with his popularity and profile at the club wouldn't help with our membership?

These are desperate times. The AFL are trying to screw us and we need people like Garry as spokespeople if noyhing else.

I think you are being unreasonably harsh, and in any case, I doubt that you have a clue what or how he is be contributing. By the way, wasn't he on the panel that recommended the selection of our coach?

Would love to see Sir Garry at more club functions, but cannot deny the 'power' he has from the media. Having the front man of the Footy Show and Footy Classifieds is exposure the MFC couldn't buy.

Look what Eddie has done for the Filth cause of his position.

You could say the same about Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw... they had no experience is securing a 'home' or building a 'sound list' as you put it. Probably the only president who could claim such things would be Jeff Kennett. However, what Brayshaw and McGuire do well as president's is market their club and get the brand out there.

Garry is the 'saviour' in that regard for us though... look at the media avenues he has available to him to market the club:

- His newspaper column

- His radio work

- His television work

You could argue that he would have to cut back on all of them, should he get into the presidential position one day... but McGuire has proved that you can juggle all of it.

That said though... I am happy with Jim Stynes and what he will bring, and I am also happy with Garry Lyon's love for the club. Anyone who was at the dinner on Saturday night would know that he bleeds for the red and blue. I have no doubt that he is doing stacks of stuff behind the scene's.

It wont suprise me if we find that the big Gaz is a secret little member of the Stynes board. Come Thursday, dont be suprised if he is alongside big Jimma joining the board of the soon to be mighty MFC.

l get sick to death of people questioning Garry Lyon's commitment to our club, he is behind the scenes doing a hell of a lot, he is Jimmy's best mate. Didn't you read some of the things said about his speech on Saturday night? and for that matter if you keep asking about Lyon's allegiance, what about all the other players who played for the club, just because they are not in the media doesn't mean they can't be behind the scenes. Lyon is doing a lot more than most.

Was that a direct reply to me or the others on this thread?

I was backing the big man, I love the bloke. Im saying he does a shitload, and wouldnt suprise me that he does join Jimma on the board.

I think he's been a little soft. On Footy Classified last night, he said that he didn't attend the walk to the 'g because he had other commitments and he didn't realise that it was on anyway!! Come on, Gaz!!

Clearly we need Garry to be like Eddie. I'd be more than happy for Garry to be hated like Eddie was in exchange for a greater interest in our club! (although it was Collingwood I guess, so Eddie dug himself a grave anyway lol) Having said that, it'd be pretty cool if Garry is indeed on the Jimmy's board :D!

In an unrelated matter, did anyone at yesterday's game see Woey? He didn't look very happy to be there in a suit and tie walking round the 'G at the age of 30 odd lol the wound is still deep for me too...

He was having a great old chat with Neita on the way in... and he got a nice rousing reception from the crowd too!

This sums it up for me perfectly. Yes Gary is and was a great asset for the club both as a player and as a media personality, but I'm not sure how far he goes out of his way...

I suspect that every single person here would be willing to make millions playing for Melbourne and chatting about footy on TV. But, whilst I would never knock the bloke for living this dream, it is telling that Garry supporters have to invent notions of "behind the scenes work" in order to convince themselves that he is doing more than merely his (frankly luxurious) day job. Indeed I am often surprised that, even in the course of his daily work, Lyon isn't a little more strident in his defence of the club. I'm not saying that such behind the scenes work doesn't go on (I wouldn't know) - but then there isn't much evidence that it does, and surely nobody thinks that Garry is such a shrinking violet that all such work would go unnoticed?

Eddie, he is not.

DoF I think that goes for every poster on this thread. While Lyon does have some background involvement, I wonder how close he to the Club. He did not make the 150 walk because of an appointment clash and was only aware of the event recently. Amazing that he only recently became aware.

He's high profile and respected, nowithstanding his misjudgement in supporting Newman's behaviour at the TV awards ceremony.

If truly committed to the cause, Lyon could offer a lot to the Board and MFC. However, its not as though Lyon has not been invited onto the MFC Board in the past. He has been and refused because of commitments. I do admire Brayshaw for what he is going at North though.

Great post Hazy.

Honestly, if you dont know the facts, then why post it. Leave the man alone. A champion of our club, who has a JOB in the media, like you and i have a JOB at the office or as a school teacher.. it is his career. The Lyon doubters on this forum suffer from a bad case of tall poppy syndrome. get over it, get a hold of his speech at the 150 heroes dinner, listen and then ask yourself if you do enough for this club!

No it's people like you that wont take a persons word for what it is and have to have personal jibes at a guy that i suspect you barracked and supported when he played for the red and the blue. Hypocritical at it's most blatantly obvious!!

And i guess you would know that his "Frankly Luxurious" day job is not that demanding.

Makes me sick the constant negativity towards one of our Fav sons.

That is pathetic Rhino... Lets hang the bloke because he had other things to do.. stop trying to find things just to be negative. What have you done for the club?? hey? tell us, so that we can then pick holes in your loyalty. You are the biggest embarrasment on this forum, and quite frankly, you give Melbourne supporters a bad name.

Lucky for you I do. ;)

Unfortunately too many posters like yourself taking a person's meritorious playing record as carte blanche to draw idyllic and unfounded assumptions about what the individual is or isnt doing "behind the scenes". Garry does give a good speech and has a lot to offer. Its a pity his contribution is limited. Then again James Brayshaw and Eddie Mc Guire have jobs in the media......

I am actually a big supporter of Lyon and know what he can do. I raised that to challenge the view as to how much he does behind the scenes. Many posters have made comments as to how much and frankly they would not know unless they were in the inner sanctum. They are not. I have no problem with a clash of commitments. Just a lack of awareness of a major Club event that has been publicised for some time frm someone who is behind the scenes.

Keep misreading and misinterpreting D3. Marvellous

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
