  1. Thanks for reminding me. God, he wrote some good stuff. Was sorry to hear he's unwell. Another unexpected source of some very good writing, for me, was Peter Schwabb. Strange - there hasn't really been much quality writing about our game. Bob Murphy the current highlight for me. Sorry if it's off topic, but I recently read a great book about cricket - called The Mystery Spinner, by Gideon Haig.
  2. Always a little overwhelmed by people on this site who know so much more about footy than I do, but jeez it hurts listening to how the Doggies are going. I love the way they play - so free-flowing, attacking and confident. When will I be also to say that about our mob? I hate the way we mostly play - if we do get the ball, our first reaction seems to be to stand there looking like a shag on a rock and then dish off a hospital hand pass. Sorry Cards - didn't mean to steal your thunder - we said the same thing at about the same time.
  3. I'm still p'd off we didn't get that priority pick.
  4. Why should we have any expectation that Things will improve when Goodwin takes over? He's Roos hand-picked man.
  5. Er sorry I think I must live in a different aeon than some of you guys. I still don't get it (and am keen to - I find most things about Hird interesting - he's a fascinating example of how our obsession with sport creates purely narcissistic personalities - and his worshipers are the kind of empty vessels who are attracted to such creeps) Our own dear Tulip was his polar opposite.
  6. Bucks used to annoy me, but, I must admit, I find him quite interesting these days. But what I really love about him is that he is a walking premiership-avoidance zone and he's coaching the Filth. I suppose this is old news to all you experts, but if you look at his personal history, he could have gone with either North or Brisbane and enjoyed their respective glory years, but chose the Pies because he wanted the ultimate success. All those years as a champion player and he never got one. Then he became coach just in time to replace a premiership-winning coach and they've been hopeless ever since.
  7. I reckon he gets booed because he speaks out. Good on him for that. The people who boo him are the same sort of rednecks who booed Mohammed Ali for the same reason.
  8. You're underestimating her age (she was 13, not that he could possibly have known that). Is that a deliberate strategy to support your (non) argument?
  9. Hey, just noticed, My double century of posts. Jeez, what a cheery one. I need to get out more.
  10. I'm afraid I don't hold out much hope for Goodwin. Hand-picked and taught by Mr Bland. What's he learnt? How to sit on your arse and collect $1.5 million a year? He could have learnt that from Hird. Hate footie at present. Over- defensive team, rugby scrum around the ball, confusing rules. We all know who's going to win the flag. Hate it. One of my favourite past times has been taken over by the spivs and destroyed. Hate it.
  11. I've been a member for similar amount of time, and am starting to feel the same way. Then I go back and look at the Robbie Flower tribute and think, oh well, it's only a couple of hundred and I'm kind of hooked on this club, alas... Bloody wish my dad had barracked for Hawthorn but.
  12. My wife likes Roos. Tells me he's very handsome. I've decided he's an overpaid dope. Wish he'd sod off (and take Dawes with him) As somebody else said back in an earlier post, why can't we shepherd? Seems like the easiest thing to do in football.
  13. My god, I can't stand Watson. What the hell is he in the team for? The guy's got four centuries in what is it - nearly 60 tests (and never in pressure situations)? Batting has been our problem for decades, and we exacerbate the problem by keeping this plodder in the team. Send him back to the rubbish IPL - that's where he belongs. Ready replacement in Marsh.
  14. Excellent post. If they were really injected with something and didn't know what it was, they'd be taking legal action against anybody - the club, Dank himself - who could tell them. It's always puzzled me that nobody has sued the arse off Dank. If somebody gave me an injection and refused to tell me what it was, I'd be off to Maurice Blackburn in a flash. Like Choke, Ted (and the rest of us, Isuppose) the only logical conclusion is that they do know, but want to keep it secret because it's banned.
  15. Hey, I heard ya too - you were great.
  16. Hey Clint Lovely of you to give him his own thread. Utter moron, most annoying commentator around. As others said, his trouble is he just doesn't realise how stupid he is. He was one of the chorus leaders at the time of the tanking debacle. And the name. Is there a worse male name? It's like his parents had a discussion along the lines of: hmmm, this is a really dumb looking baby. What's the most appropriate name we can give it? How about Wayne? No, that doesn't capture the sublime stupidity of this baby. I know - let's stick a "der" in front of it. Late thought - sorry if this sounds disrespectful to any Demonlanders called Dwayne. I'm sure you wear it well. I have a rather unfortunate First name myself.
  17. Fantastic post. I was just sitting here thinking how much our beautiful game is analogous to the insane housing market. We had a beautiful asset in the idea of home ownership. Then the spivs and the conmen got hold of it and turned it into a commercial enterprise. Somebody's making squillions out of it, but it certainly isn't the younger generation, who have been priced out of the market. Same thing with football - they took a wonderful community venture and sold it off to the highest bidder. The poor buggers who were down the bottom when it happened are doomed to stay down there.
  18. Please Add my thanks. Lovely story. Best of luck to your family.
  19. Dunno who I hate more - Bombers coterie members, drug cheats or property developers. Oh hang on - they're more or less synonymous.
  20. Ah BB, you have a lovely way of cutting to the chase!
  21. Hey Prodee, re your point 4 If your neighbour stole your family farm through nefarious dealings and you had to watch his descendants lording it over you for generations, how would you feel? And wouldn't it be reasonable if one of those descendants was to feel a twinge of guilt? I live on a big bush block north of Melbourne, and am strongly aware of the ghosts of its original inhabitants, and do my best to honour their legacy and repay what I owe them (I spent over twenty years working with aboriginal people on community projects, and was constantly shocked by the racism I saw inflicted upon them and the patience with which they bore it) For what it's worth, I LOVE what Goodsy does. Many of the advances in Aboriginal community development have come about because of warriors like him. I just wish the bugger had played for us. Cheers
