Of course we think/hope we will be playing finals in 2021 and beyond but for an outsider they'd look at 1 finals finish in 14 seasons as unlikely to fulfill that need. If we can trade him for TMac I'd be all for it but player/player trades rarely happen anymore. If they do maybe we could throw in OMac as steak knives and get a 2nd rounder back ?

The circumstances in the AFL are completely different to those in the NFL who for years ignored and actively tried to cover up medical research which indicated a link between playing football and CTE or the symptoms associated with it, most notably severe migraines, memory loss and other cognitive issues as well as mental health issues which in some cases led to suicide most notably from Junior Seau. In recent years the NFL have made rule changes to limit the incidence of head knocks but there was a period of about a decade where they ignored it which is where the negligence lies. The AFL has not ignored it as far as I'm aware and has been making changes to "protect the head" for 15 or so years at least. The issue is no-one knows exactly what types of hits are the issue. It's not just strikes to the head or incidents leading to someone being concussed or knocked out. It could be the cumulative effect of hits to the body causing a whiplash effect leading to the brain impacting the skull. There are concerns that repeatedly heading the ball in soccer, particularly for juniors, could be an issue. No-one knows and it can only be picked up post mortem. The NFL have limited training sessions where they are allowed to have full contact, that could be something we see in future AFL/AFLPA CBA's (if it's not in there already).

To be honest Smith could be a solid option. A Melbourne man and strong MCC ties. But there would have to be a very real case for change not just change for changes sake. On field performance is not a reason to topple a president/board unless they have made some terrible decisions that have led to that. Off field our performance is good and if they can get a home base in the MCG precinct they will have been the best performed board since our halcyon days.

Even the best don't nail 100% of their picks and then you have to look at development post drafting as well How do our picks over the last 6 or 7 years stack up against the rest of the comp. That's where you can start to judge how good Taylor has been. Our drafting prior to him was diabolical so maybe he just looks good in comparison? Or maybe he is hitting above average compared to the rest of the league? I don't know but would be interesting to see some comparisons.

I don't agree with that, Dodoro is pretty notorious for driving a hard bargain. It's the reason the Shiel deal went down to the wire, the reason Daniher didn't go to the Swans etc Difficult to deal with may be the wrong term but I'd say we would end up paying more than what he is worth if we wanted to get him

So why the talk of him leaving? Hawthorn clearing the decks for a hard rebuild? If so they'd be looking at a 2nd round pick which is more than I'd be willing to pay.

If they haven't put something on the table for him then they're almost forcing his hand.

If we can't find a way to fit his single minded will to win and his ferocity at the contest into our team that is on us. Getting rid of a player like that for "cultural reasons" would be a damning indictment on the team and club.
