We need to add midfielders that can break lines. Players that can run and carry and more importantly hit targets. We need outside speed that can find the footy and hit targets.

No idea how will get the job but like our selection panel I would go after Malthouse, if he says no Lyon if he says no get into the assistant coaches either Brown, Sanderson or Neld.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 2011 Season Wrap Edition
drdrake replied to Striker475's topic in Melbourne Demons
We thought we would start to climb the mountain but 2011 never saw us leave base camp. We tried to climb the mountain but we never had the leaders or plans to even get out of the tent. The good is we are still at base camp and we have some talented players in the tent. We added some more talent to our tent in 2011 and with the right leaders and some sort of plans/structure we have the ability to start the climb. In 2011 we had to much reliance on a group of under 21 year olds to win matches. We have one match winner that is above 21 who is inconsistant. Our improvemnet will come from the development of our young players but we need to match the talent we have with a game plan that can take us forward. -
or we have been playing him injured to stuff him up for the GWS and he has commited to the MFC so we get him right for pre-season.

This has to become a non issue, the same question can be asked of the big clubs how many mambers do they lose to AFL Memberships. We are a couple of thousand members away from 40,000 and in all honest along with Richmond we have been the worst performing team from the past 5 years. We have the potential to hit 50,000 members but we need our on field performance to go from potential to actual. The next 12 months are extremely important for our club we can not turn another year out like 2011 as all the good work off the field will be undone.

If you look at our game against Gold Coast on the week end, the only reason why the Gold Coast can be remotely competitive is when the experienced players play well. GWS look like they will have no experienced players they are adding kids to the kids they will get in the draft. GWS will be miles behind the Gold Coast and will be well placed on the bottom ofthe ladder for the next 4 seasons and whilst on the bottom of the ladder getting pumped every week the other 17 clubs will be poaching any good players that they draft. GWS will be the biggest failure in the AFL's history. If you want the money take it but get ready for 3-4 years of getting smashed.

Unfortunately Morton will have little currency, we would struggle to get a second round pick for him which means the club will more than likely keep him with a two year contract. The next question is are the Morton brothers the greatest under acheivers in terms of brothers drafted at AFL level. Mitch and Cale enter into the AFL system with big wraps and delivered nothing.

Jamars tapwork all year has been predictable, just drop it behind defensive side, it was the same last year, this year opposing midfielders know exactly where Jamar will put his tap and have roved off him. The issue is the spot he taps to if we don't get the clearance it opens up a quick attack we usually have 1 player in the region if he can't get the footy there is noone to defend a quick clearance into our defensive 50. When it works looks great but I dare to say his taps have been sharked more this year than his effective taps.

To me our list looks nearly there, the only issue we have is our good footballers are 18-22yo. I'm all for adding to our midfield depth, I'm not so hung up on another tall forward I think our forward line has the ability to kick winning scores as long as we can get it inside 50m enough. With the sub rule to really need your ruckman to rest in the forward pocket and another year into Martin and Gawn they will cause headaches up forward. On the midfield I don't believe we need to add the grunt inside midfielder I would like to see us get a couple of outside quick midfielders. Over the next couple of years you will have Trengove, McKenzie add in Tapscott, Gysberts, Jetta, Evans and hopefully Scully that will be your midfield clearance players. I look at our players capable of breaking lines we have Bennell, Bail, Nicholson and Blease, I think we should draft quick outside left footers. Our clearance work is poor due due our predictable ruckman tapping to the same spot and our set ups around stoppages. We have nobody looking to create space for a team mate, we play like under 12s win the tap and all go for the footy instead of winning the tap protect the area, create space for someone to win an effective clearance.

Mine would be Taspcott Frawley Garland Blease Rivers Grimes Scully Trengove Gysberts Sylvia Watts Petterd Howe Martin Jurrah Jamar Moloney McKenzie Jetta Jones Green Davey Bail Bennell Nicholson

His bump was impressive because it wasn't a young Gold Coast play it was Harbrow and he moved him 5m of the ball. I have full confidence that if Nev can stay healthy through pre-season he will become a very good mid-fielder.
-
Jamar and Martin continue to palm the ball to the same spot every hit out, they just try to drop it a metre behind the contest our defensive side and every club knows this and every opposing midfielder gets a full head of steam running towards their goal to shark our hit outs. Would be interested to know how many goals we have conceeded directly from centre bounce clearances. What we saw yesterday was our young players that have carried this team for most of the year look tired and they can't wait for next week to be over. Watts, Trengove, McKenzie and co have been smashed up over the past 23 weeks, they have had good years and will be better in 2012. As it has been all year we just lack the high quality on th eexperience end of our list, even players that have been with us for 5+years. We need our 19-22yo players to carry us forward and when they tire we get games like yesterday and weeks like the past 6. Yesterday highlighted our lack of high quality experienced midfielders, we are lucky we played the sun as any team with a half decent forward line would of smashed us yesterday and that includes Port.
-
Would like to see Tapscott on the ball, to me we don't need a man that can kick the footy 60m from the back pocket, we want him kicking the ball 60m from the wing to deep inside forward 50. If we can get a fit Grimes/Blease/Garland/Frawley running the ball out of the back line you will need guys that can deliver it from the wing high HFF into our forward line.
-
I do like the metres gained stat its a shame that two defenders head up the list, would be nice if we had midfielders that can run and carry the footy. I would love to have a stat inside 25m from goal to me this stat is more relevant than inside 50's.
-
Agree with this, it is a shame that all three have major parts of their game that is holding them back, Jones and McKenzie disposal and Jetta his running capacity.
-
If I was a coach I would love having this guy in my team. What he brings is the hard stuff, the big bumps, the sheppards and tackles that stick. Three goals yesterday came from Jetta doing this hard stuff and he wasn't playing on a kid he was playing on a good senior footballer. I still remember his game in the midfielder pre-season angainst Brisbane his clearance wotk and hardness at the contest was the best I've seen by a Melbourne player for some time. The key to his future improvement is his tank, he needs to work on his tank to be able to play in the midfield, he is not a small forward. He needs to stay fit over pre-season I think he missed a lot this year, get his running capacity up and I can see him runing regularly through our midfield rotation. This will bring an unselfish player into our midfield that will be prepare to create space through his body pressence, this is something our midfield lacks, someone that works hard to create space for their team mates around stoppages, this is done by postioning, sheppards and blocks. Big soft spot for him, because I love this type of player, I just hope he can get his endurance up.
-
I agree with this, I think next year we will see Bail and Nicholson become our defensive midfielders and Bartram on the outer. Although if we can get Blease and Grimes down back I can see Bartram returning to the back pocket as a pure defensive back to allow these two to create.
-
You look at the players that have had long lay offs with injury, Tom had a limited Pre season and missed a fair chunk of games mid year. Young players can't miss that much footy and hyave outstanding years. Jamar has struggled since returning from injury, Davey still hasn't had a kick since returning from injury. Give this guy a break he will be an outstanding footballer just hope it is with us.
-
For most of our younger players the seasons end can't come quick enough. Trengove and Watts look tired and need a rest they both have had outstanding years.

Just did my Electricity and Gas with them, got my footy and looks like I will be saving between 15-20% on my bills. They gave me several options including AGL but offered up better rates with another provider. -
How good would it be, Collingwood lose the GF, all the supporters go over to the after match function, Micky Maltshake grabs the mike, "sorry about today the boys tried their best, I certainly look forward to coaching against you on Queens Birthday, go the dees"
-
Mick will either be at Collingwood or coaching Melbourne next year. He will not take 1 year off, he can afford to push Collingwood for the a role that he has designed with the knowledge that if they don't agree to his terms he can pack up his desk walk 200m down Swan St and unpack into his new desk. Don't worry about the contract if they can't agree on a role I'm sure the legal eagles can make it null and Void.

Will be interesting if Fitzpatrick gets a game in all honesty he doen't deserve one after injury lay off and a couple of games at Casey you only would be playing him for a taste of AFL footy. To me we will line up as Tapscott Frawley Garland Bennell Rivers MacDonald Scully Moloney Jones Howe Watts Jetta Green Martin Jurrah Jamar Trengove Bartram Blease Morton McKenzie McDonald McNamarra Nicholson Fitzpatrick
