What I would love to see from our team in the near future is....
drdrake replied to felixdacat's topic in Melbourne Demons
I would love to see our team line up as per below Bartram Frawley Garland Grimes Rivers Strauss Blease Sylvia Trengove Jurrah Cook Tapscott Green Watts Davey Jamar Moloney Scully Jones Martin Gysberts Morton Emer McKenzie Maric Petterd -
I can't understand how a player can be an absolute gun midfielder with good clean skills as an under age player to complete garbage as an AFL player. This guy was highly regarded not only by Melbourne but a number of clubs when he was drafted and now he can't hit a target over 15m, fumbles, is the guy no good or has the club destroyed him by trying to making him a player that he will never be. This guy was voted the best player of the U18 carnival in a year that a lot of good midfielders were running around. To me his size is the problem we want him to be that utility that can play back forward and in the middle, maybe we simplify his role and put him back in the midfield where as a junior he dominated, whether this is at Casey or with the seniors. To me he looks to be [censored] himself everytime he gets the footy, not scared of contact but scared of stuffing up.

The major concern is we still have the same issues that we had 3 years ago. We can't stop teams scoring against us, we don't go inside our 50m arc enough, we have a big gap between our good and bad footy. All we have heard for the past two years is we have talent but for some reason that talent hasn't been able to get on the park together or show the ability they had when they were drafted. Our issues are bigger than just sack the coach, we have a soft culture at our club and it has been there for some time. We can't keep players fit, we take the last 4 drafts and the talented players we should have Morton, Grimes, Maric, Strauss, Blease, Taspcott, Gysberts, Scully have had long periods injured. You add Watts and Trengove to that list, these are the guys we hear that we need to play more games and more games together and this week hopefully we can see this, with only 2 not available with injury. Last year our defense looks great, we lose Wellman back to Essendon, a club with no defense that with Wellman they now have a strong defense. We replace him with Brian Royal, we look dis-organised and confused back there. Royal has a very bad choice for the club. Our forward line has never looked organised, the push to far up the ground and we never have a player front and square. Our midfield on paper looks good but we still can't transit from the back line to forward, this is Mark Williams domian. West has done OK with our stoppage work. If you look at Essendon, West Coast and Carlton they went after good assistant coaches a mixture of experience and players just out of the game. We need to clean out our assistant coaches, Scott West stays and gets the full midfield role but the other three need to go. Bailey is the coach and he is the front for the coaching department but Chris Connelly needs to step up and lead, make a tough assessment on the people he manages, the medico's, Conditioning staff, assistant coaches and the head coach. I would rather go down playing good hard positive footy then go out like we did on Friday night. We had a full defensive mind set, the coaches gave our players no chance to play well from the start. Please start to back your players don't drop a loose man behind the footy from the first bounce, everytime we have done this we get smashed. A game like Friday night we should of challenged our players to go one on one, lest see who can play go hard contested one on one footy.

We need to add run and lots of it, we need to find players that can carry the footy break the lines and hit targets. We need to get run out of our back half, run in our forward line so IMO this is our team assuming all fit Strauss Frawley Bennell Sylvia Rivers Macdonald Scully Trengove Jones Green Watts Jurrah Maric Newton Martin Gawn Moloney Gysberts Jetta McKenzie Evans Sub Morton In Strauss Gawn Scully Trengove Out Warnock Nicholson Bate Petterd I think we need Sylvia and Green to alternate between half forward and half back, we need someone back there that can be strong smart and be able to hit targets. Same with Martin and Bennell depending on the structure of Essendons forward line, if three talls line up forward Martin goes back with Bennell going to the forward line. We have run on the bench, Strauss, Sylvia Bennell adding some run and skill to the back line, a bit of tall timber up forward.

Fixed with a better player

This year at Casey has been great, great on two fronts they are playing well and the amount of Melbourne players playing in the firsts. This week every available Melbourne Player is playing in the firsts. Last game I think we had 2 rookies in the 2nds and the rest in the 1sts. We need to be alligned in the VFL you imagine the club trying to find players to fill spots this week with all our injuries, we would be getting smacked and that doesn't help the development of players.
-
If you play the team we have named tonight against the below team of the players we have out or at Casey, if all are fit who would win? I will allow one Casey player to add a little forward strength Out Team Bartram Davis Garland Grimes McDonald Tapscott Davey Scully Blease Howe Cook Dunn Aussie Fevola Gawn Jamar Trengove Bail Spencer, Lawrence, Campbell, McNamara
-
Looking at the named players we should line up Bennell Warnock Frawley MacDonald Rivers Morton Evans Sylvia Jones Petterd Watts Jurrah Green Newton Maric Martin Moloney Gysberts Nicholson Jetta McKenzie Sub Bate I know Nicholson mentioned he might be sub, I think we start him just in case one of the Carlton small/mid forwards run a muck early. Give Morton the Job on Waite, Rivers gets Walker, Bennell to Garlett, Frawley to Betts, the resting ruck for Warnock. Green goes to Gibbs if he starts down back. You might even consider giving Jones the job on Murphy. Put our clearance guns in the middle to start. Play Jurrah on Yarran.
-
On Davey, I had to have a little laugh in the last quarter on Saturday, he was done for the day and I dare to say would have been subbed off if we still had the option. He was limping around looking at the bench wanting to come off, all of the sudden the ball was near him Jones wasn't and he was the Flash again sprinted after the footy was quick the ears pricked back, then Jones went back to him the limp came back and the looks to the bench started again. I'm starting to think he won't play might be the same as Aussie's knee the week before.
-
The problem with Scully is the club will never push him too hard, he pushes himself so whether he plays at Casey or Melbourne this guy can't help but work hard. At least having him as a sub we can limit his game time.
-
Stuff the VFL. Play him as the sub on Friday night. If we don't see him Friday night I can't wait for the following week our midfield will be Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, McKenzie, Evans plus a few older boys Moloney, Sylvia, Jones.
-
I'm changing my team In Scully no stuffing around at Casey as per the MFC website if he is fit play him on Friday night. Start him as a Sub. This guy is a machine he will be fit enough, if you bring Morton straight back into your side after injury, Scully is a dead certainty if fit.
-
OK I can leave Bennell out now Bartram got off, apparently you can slam someones head into the ground after all, just hope you don't knock them out and you will be OK.

If I was Dean Bailey this week, these are the tactics I would use First our Zone, doesn't work get rid of it. If we play our forward press against a good team we will be smashed and Carlton are a good team. I would implement a new simply zone, starting with our back half we must have two players in our defensive 50m arc no more easy goals out the back. The other 4 of our back six stand on the defensive side of the centre in the middle between the square and the centre circle to out riders 15m from the boundary and to protecting the middle 5 m in from the centre square. This moves to which the side the ball is on and grabs a player as they run past. No lose player is to enter into our defensive 50m arc man up. That leaves 12 players to stop the ball coming out set up 3 players 30m out from goal 4 players 45m out and 5 players 55m out in a fan mode. If they get the ball out at least they will see our defenders in front of them rahter than open space, this will slow them up. Next our point kick ins, I want 4 players to set up in a rectangle 25m out from goal 10m in between each player for the first two then 45m from goal 10m apart for the other 2, these are defensive players not to be used, if we turn it over we have the corridor protected. If we win the footy the two guys 45m out run to space to create and our back 6 get into position in our defensive half. Poit kick ins, if we can't hit someone kick to a point and get numbers around the fall, don't do what we did against Hawtorn and kick to the same point, mix it up change sides kick long up the middle, get some sort of code or something so we know were the ball is going. With the 4 guys protecting for a rebound have confidence. Our forwards, don't push to high, always have 2 forwards inside our forward 50m arc, play Jurrah and Green in there, Carlton will man them up which takes players out of there zone. The other 4 forwards play from HFF to and lead, lead at the zoned player they will be stationary you lead hard to get in front of them. Give Davey the Job on Yarren. Play Green as a deep forward, back our midfielders to win the contest and give them something to kick to. I thing that it is mental, we win the footy look up no one to kick to so we start to play defensive, we stop prop switch and turn it over keep structure and players in our forward line and don't be afraid to kick it 50m to a contest but do it quickly. That will encourage players to attack as they know they will look up and see red and blue jumpers, get Davey and Maric front and square kick it to 15-25m out from goal even to a contest it puts pressure on Carlton. We can win this game, not by setting up like other teams but setting up the way that suits us. We have good defensive backs that can win one on one contests, we have mids that can win the footy and to me we have forwards that can kick enough goals to win this game.

Only brought Bennell in for the lose of Bartram through suspension. I think he can match up on Garlett well.

When we saw the fixture late last year most of us would of marked the games we expect to win, lose and the 50/50 games. I had us as losing to Hawks, Saints, 50/50 games against Sydney, North and West Coast, and wins against Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide. So for me after 8 games I would have been happy with 4 wins, so we are close. I had us beating Essendon and winning 8 of our last 11. I still think we can win 8 of our last 11, beating Essendon will be tough. We are a long way from Rock bottom, we talk about our early draft picks that we have had and the young talent on our list. Only 3 players Watts Tapscott, Jurrah from the past 4 years drafts have played in the 8 games we have played. Top 25 picks 2007 Morton Injury has hurt him again, still lacks the defensive skills, should stay at Casey until this is sorted Grimes Injured out for the year but is a gun Maric at the moment our best small forward, was made to earn his spot hopefully can keep getting better, has ability, just neds to work hard 2008 Watts slow start but starting to show his ability. Will still have bad games but is improving, love to see him kick 4 goals in a match Blease Starting to show the speed and skill at Casey, I would debut him this week Strauss just can't stay fit. To hard to say if he is any good doesn't seem to be able to string games together 2009 Scully Gun injured expect to be back for Collingwood or Fremantle Trengove Gun back for Essendon Gysberts Injured pre-season, coming into form Tapscott the bull injured this week but is a gun You imagine in a few weeks when our midfield will be Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, McKenzie, Morton(he will come good), Moloney, Jones, Evans, Bail comes back, with Sylvia, Green, Davey, Maric as back up. I still can't wait to go to the footy each week to see our young players show something. Ok it is frustrating to lose and lose in the way that we have but our future is still bright. Add to the above Jurrah and Mckenzie we still have very good reason to be excited about the rest of the year.

I would play Davey but switch his role, play him on Yarran as a defensive forward tag. We have two main isues our forwards push to far up the ground giving us no options when we break from half back and on the flip side when we forward press we are getting to many easy goals kicked out the back. We need to have two players in our defensive 50m arc when we press, we are not good enough at pressing and we can't win games when we have 4-5 goals per week kicked by our zone being beaten and players running into open goals. As for changes, we need to decide are we playing for now or tomorrow. Unfortunately playing Bate and Newton will not help us improve players for the future. On current form I wouldn't expect these two to be o our list at years end. For me Out Taspcott, Bate, Newton, Bartram(I think he will get rubbed out hope not but likely) In Bennell, Gawn, Nicholson, Blease Maric Watts Green Jurrah Sylvia Davey Jones Moloney Evans MacDonald Rivers Nicholson Bennell Warnock Frawley Martin Gysberts McKenzie Gawn Jetta Petterd Sub Blease We need to bring in players that have the ability to break lines, we need this as we have Moloney, Jones, McKenzie, Gysberts, Jetta, Sylvia that can win the footy in close but with Davey out of form we need quick skilled players Evans was able to bring this and also win his own footy. Bennell plays on Garlett, Frawley to Betts, Rivers gets first crack at Waite.
-
A concern is our mid size forwards Green, Jurrah, Maric, Petterd, Bate cna't keep the forward inside our attacking 50m arc. We are getting to many points kicked against us, our back six to me looks good enough to restrict teams, our zone is no good which is exposing our back 6 the amount of goals that are easy goals due to teams getting through our zone. If our zone doesn't work go back to one on one.
-
IMO Bartram needs to go to Milne, I have liked his role in as our midfield stopper, but I think we don't need to play a tag this week. Tapscott did a good job on Thomas last week but as you point out we need the footy in this guys hands coming out of the Defensive 50m arc. One thing we will get with Frawley, Rivers, Bartarm, MacDonald, Warnock is some good defensive players, you can back them one on one. You play Davey as a defensive wing man to give you that second quality kick down there and it is up to our midfielders to work hard back so we get the quality back there.
-
Agree, but a few posters have got a little excited by Watts being named at HBF. We will line up something like this Bartram Warnock Rivers Tapscott Frawley MacDonald Davey Moloney Jones Sylvia Watts Green Maric Newton Jurrah Martin Gysbert McKenzie Evans Petterd Jetta Sub Bate
-
Watts will only play as a loose man in defense in the back line if that, we have Frwaley, Rivers, MacDonald, Warnock down back we don't need another tall. Watts will line up at CHF and unless we are getting beaten up that's where he will play

Michael Evans upgraded from rookie list
drdrake replied to Heart Beats True's topic in Melbourne Demons
We haven't done to badly in recent years from the rookie list, McKenzie, Davey, Jamar and this kid Evans can play. -
A few boys back is interesting, I would assume Mckenzie, Rivers, imagine if they named Scully this board would go into melt down. Good to see a debut, if it is only one I would like to see either Blease or Gawn but it should be Evans he has the form through the VFL.
-
If the Saints can get their defensive game working we will struggle. If we can get the ball inside our 50m arc 50 times we will win by 5 goals, as long as Bailey backs his players no more loose men in defense, St Kilda is Fragile we need to attack we have a forward line that can smash their back 6. If St Kilda kill the game with defensive pressure through the midfield they will win. I will back our back 6 to beat their forwards one on one.
-
I'm quite happy with our forward structure, I don't think we need to add any more forwards. Jetta shouldn't be dropped, we need to add midfielders a defender and a ruckman. 4 changes Out Garland, Bail, Dunn, Aussie In Evans, McKenzie, Gawn, MacDonald Line up Bartram Warnock Bennell MacDonald Frawley Tapscott Davey Moloney Jones Sylvia Watts Jurrah Maric Newton Green Martin Gysberts Mckenzie Jetta Petterd Gawn Sub Evans I don't think we need a midfield tag this week, Bartram gets Milne. Green needs to play in the forward line, we play Newton as a key forward lets stretch there backline.
