The five players you want to have an impact in 2021

The Five players i would like to impact. 1. Petracca 2 Oliver 3 May 4 Ben Brown 5 Langdon We need all these guys to regularly impact and the whole team to to lift around them, i really believe each of these guys can go another level or two in terms of impact and consistency,

Off-season outlook: Pressure will be on Melbourne and Simon Goodwin

Great post! I been banging on about the benefits of mindfulness and knowing how great it has been for a club like Richmond who were prior to that perennial underachievers. It gobsmacks me why you would not try and gain every little possible advantage that you could in an industry where a % difference can mean playing finals or not. Of all the clubs out there i think we could benefit the most out of it due to our past history. I expect we will do it in like 10 years time where and when the whole industry will be using it to gain every advantage possible. i really pray we get onto it much sooner. Most of our issues are "up top!"

Off-season outlook: Pressure will be on Melbourne and Simon Goodwin

Interesting summary! How would you rate Goodwin among these other coaches? If you believe Simpson, Buckley and Beveridge have stagnated but reached a higher level . i don't think we really have a clear cohesive plan when it comes to a style that supporters can depend or rely upon. In fact i would say we were closer to a good gameplan at the start of his tenure as coach. Hopefully with Yze and WIlliams added to the group there will be clarity in what we want our game to look like. Something that Simon has persisted with is outnumbers in the backline (We had to stop the easy out the back goals), but it creates this imbalance when we go forward we are constantly outnumbered. I find this a bit flawed now we have a great backline/system that really works. Should we not be backing ourselves one on one across the field to play within our systems. It would stop the easy rebounds from attack. We might be able to lock the thing in occasionally if we had even numbers across the field. In summary, we still need a much less predictable game plan that play to our strengths and don't disadvantage over half the field!

Off-season outlook: Pressure will be on Melbourne and Simon Goodwin

It is a mix between player and all coaches responsibility, essentially though the head coach is responsible for game plan, match day tactics, selections. Over the last 2 years we have seen repeatedly that Simon likes to do thing in his own manner. I don't think i have ever seen him be proactive from changes made on game day. Definitely not proactive enough and definitely not reactive enough to the oppositions moves on game day either. Woiuld he be getting advice from rest of coaching panel on ideas? 100% yes. Does he listen or do anything? i would say he just stubbornly does what he thinks is best. I don't think you are going to find evidence to say that he does not listen but last 2 years results should make you question whether he does. I can see Yze being head coach with Mark WIlliams his right hand man should things not change greatly this year. We are still so far away from having a solid gameplan currently. Get Richmond playing our style atm and they would be rabble too. Over to you again Simon!

		Projected Best 22's 2021

Thinking it is forward or bust for Tmac. He scares me when he gets anywhere near the back line. Worse than Oscar was down back, surprises me so many see him going back there and playing any better. Decision making has always been a bit iffy under any sort of pressure. Not suited as back line player! If you could rely on him to crash packs and take many intercept marks to offset the goals he gives away through skill errors maybe it could work. He would need to up his output immensely. Either Weideman or Tmac to play 2nd tall forward, i doubt we will have both in the team very much at all this year.

New Head of Strength & Conditioning

How mindfulness gives Richmond the edge (afr.com) Really interesting what Richmond feels it has done for them. Why would you not try to get every possible edge in a highly competitive game!? So many posters here seem to think our problems are "up top" not due to our lack of quality. Goodwin is oldschool and probably would not see the benefits. I would love to see us all on the same page, busting their absolute guts over course of a full season with Premiership being the goal. They would all love to win one of course, but would they do anything for it? *Great post btw...The overall impression i get when watching Melbourne is we play scared and not many seem to be having fun. Richmond is the complete opposite, laughs/jokes/ busting guts for each other. The sooner we get minfulness involved the sooner we get out of our rut of being perennial underachievers. A game plan would help too of course!

New Head of Strength & Conditioning

Ricmond utilised a psychologist with great results. Many of their players credit it with making a huge difference. 3 Premierships in quick time. I been saying we need psychologist at club for at least 10 years. I don't believe we will win a Premiership until we work out how to get the best out of our players more consistently. Most of them seem to not be able to work it out themselves. We seem to play more like bunch of individuals than a team imo. A psychologist could solve a lot of our issues. We have the ability just weak mindset over the journey. It needs to be a collective, team effort, much more often!

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - SAM WEIDEMAN

He reminds me a LOT of Jack Darling in his earlier years. Great potential....good hands/decision making/kick. It took Darling to around the age of 26 when he really broke out. He had Kennedy to always take the best defender. Have a feeling this will be the year we start seeing some consistency. BB will greatly accelerate his development showing him how to be more crafty about his role.

		TMac on the Trade Table?

Yeah after the Sydney/Freo games i had a few C words about my team. Had less to do with culture and more vulgar profanity though :/ I do believe there is truth to the whole culture thing. I am hoping we learn to play as a team and stop caring about what each is getting paid etc. Seeing Petracca/Spargo/Weid develop this year was nice. To get to higher levels we need a heap of our list to improve....Most should be getting better, not worse. Development, game plan and start believing in each other. Trust in our structures and players working hard and consistently is the only thing that is going to get us to promised land. Most of our list has at least 10-15% improvement within them over the course of another preseason. We need to see it!

		TMac on the Trade Table?

I think the main issue is we have played him for best part of 2 years and he at no stage warranted it. He should have been dropped multiple times. Goodwin just kept the faith that he would suddenly regain form. i find it scary he did the same with Melksham /Harmes/Brayshaw this year. We too often drop fringe players but persevere for way too long with overpriced underperformers. Players need to earn their place. We just have a horrible pecking order and it is not rewarding effort from guys trying to bust into the team while others are getting gifted games. I hope Yze can sort out a lot of this, zero faith that Goodwin has it under control. No wonder we hear of factions within the team. Selection needs consistency based on merit...Not on past deeds.

		Adam Treloar

We pay around 700k to extend Jack Viney...i would think Treloar would be worth it if we could get him for around the same $$$...he is much more value to a team the type of player he is.
-

		Trade Harmes?

You can rest easy knowing we got Viney ready to carry the midfield for next 4 years. :/

		Farewell Braydon Preuss

We are without doubt paying more than what Geelong would have! He would have got offered maybe 500K max to play down at the cattery. He was on over 600K with us on his last contract i am sure this one would be similar. Geelong don't overpay their players....I would also say that Tom Hawkins is on similar money to Tmac, maybe even less :P

		Trade Targets

Getting Savage in would be our form of getting ruthless!
-

		Isaac Smith

He marked most that came his way....i would say watch some of our games some time. He got better as the year went on. Not sure what game you are watching lol. You are way off the mark!
-

		Isaac Smith

For all the people bagging Tomlinson on a wing....we may have recruited him for that role but he is clearly better in our backline. He has barely missed a beat all year. For you baggers you would prefer Omac? I don't get the angst about him one bit. He is automatic best 22 and he rarely stands out doing silly things during the course of a game. Worth the $$$ we spent on him.

		Jared Polec

i was sort of hoping he was a real estate agent, was going to inquire about buying a property from him!

		Jared Polec

Tomlinson is on not much more than 400k fwiw....800k?? Where did you get that from??

2020 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

He looks really darn good. Hard to tell what is his natural foot, uses both hands too. Ambidextrous would be my guess looked so natural. Clean hands, good pace, lovely disposal to advantage, lot to love there.....Where is he meant to be going as in how high in draft?

		Jack Viney Restricted Free Agent

Brayshaw can only get creative when he gets a chance to play midfield. I think you would find Viney has had a lot more opportunity? Either way our 3rd best mid is very limited and that is picking either of those 2 guys. If you could put Viney heart/effort into Brayshaw you would have quite the footballer though! Both are limited in the roles they play imo.

		Jack Viney Restricted Free Agent

Yeah it fits the narrative of people who think Jack is great. I agree it is well thought out and researched though. SO if it were pointing to all his flaws would it still be great for you? i Doubt it. i am sure he had to search very hard to find the positive examples he did show. Watch any game we play and there are so many more dubious moments Jack is involved in. Giving 3 or 4 examples of Jack doing the right thing does not make me blind to all the dumb stuff he does during the course of every game he plays. BTW i highlighted your post but i could have chosen half a dozen others who just seems to think Jack can do no wrong, definitely not personal. I think he is an interesting topic to discuss, for better, and/or worse. There are many other players on our list that probably deserve more scrutiny. FA has changed the way teams can attract or lose players. I would not be dancing in the streets if he were to stay or go...i do find it enticing to think of Petracca/Oliver working with a more rounded onballer though. We feel very predictable with JV in the guts, other teams onball brigade would feel the same i reckon.

		Jack Viney Restricted Free Agent

I watch every Demon game twice. i could pull many examples from each game but it is not my technical expertise to pull out screen shots to illustrate this. Seems many here think we will always be better with Jack in the team leading the charge. My eyes tell me otherwise all too frequently. He is not a spud by any means but has and will continue to be a very limited onballer. If he was Cripps size he would be scary with his attributes but i don't think he is due for growth spurt. At 26 i don't believe he will get better. His younger years i could accept his limitations, he is just not developing into anything but an average midfielder. *The fact that he has come so high on our B+F so often is really a reflection of MFC, we been bad for most of his years. It is not that Jack is THIS good and we should keep him at any costs. No anti Jack whatsoever. Just realised we are very limited while he commands major midfield time, and i would not pay him as small pressure forward, he just does not show enough smarts.

		Jack Viney Restricted Free Agent

IF it suits your narrative that we must keep Jack. He probably does more stupid things within games than good from what i see. Could show hundreds if not thousands of dumb things he still does at 26 YO. You could scroll through any game to find examples of this. He plays like his old man but few inches smaller. Todd also was a butcher with ball in hand. Viney name means a lot to Melbourne supporters but i doubt he will ever drag us to being a good team when he is one of our onballers. We will continue to play like under 12's while he is in the middle. Tough, uncompromising but very dumb footballer with ball in hand.

		Jack Viney Restricted Free Agent

The longer this takes the more chance Jack Viney heads off to Geelong. He is clearly not our best onballer and is quite limited for a 26 YO who should be at his peak. I think Melbourne would be silly to offer him any more then 3 years. Geelong will offer 4 and likely get him. So many posters think he needs to be a small pressure forward...would you want to pay 600k+ for him to learn this role? I just don't see his value and he will still have his limitations, see ball get ball type, stuffing up structures, he does not do the team things innately. Basically play a kossie role but with no where near the amount of natural ability. I love Jack, but think much like Jones before him he does not show true leadership. He just wants to crash in harder, which is admirable but so often he is crashing into a player who was in over the ball already. I really think without him being automatic selection in the midfield we would be much better off with a smart outside player. There would be plenty available in the 500-700k mark that would make a real difference to our team instantly. We can keep Jack and know exactly what we are going to get, toughness/hardness/not much footy smarts. He is 26, has currency, and i think it would be far more beneficial to us to get a decent draft pick in return. Would not be surprised at all if we told him to explore his options as we really can't afford to have both him and Harmes in the same team. Harmes is contracted for years otherwise we would be trying to offload him too. We get what we can for Jack and wish him the best. With new faces brings hope. I have no faith that JV will ever improve with us, it is not like he is suddenly going to discover footy IQ and make better decisions.
