  1. i would not rule anything out atm. We have 2 games to go. Say we get beaten by 40+ points margins in both those games. You really think he stays?? i know what i suggested is not ideal. Not much is with the mess we currently are in! We need to get creative if we are to dig our way out of it. 4 years, 5 years, 6 years when is enough? We simply must change tact greatly or we can expect similar results going forward. Goodwin is a massive part of the problem, unless he is prepared to change massively he will be dead man walking for next year. The players will have a get out of jail free card to underperform then pin it all on the coach. We lose too many games by midseason and the jungle drums will get too much for the board not to act. I can't see the point of setting us up to fail once again. 2019 we were full of hope that we had turned a new leaf. We showed very little that season. 2020 has been bizarre circumstances but i don't believe we have shown enough consistently. 4 years to see some semblance of a gameplan...i don't see it. Flooding the backline and having nobody to kick it to, i see that! If he is coach so much has to change about Simon, i am not sure he has it in him. Hopefully i get to eat humble pie at some stage because ultimately i want nothing more than the MFC to succeed. Maybe we just need to have Bartlett for pregame rev ups and all our problems will be solved. The players clearly need to be revved up often to perform at any sort of adequate level. We always seem to come out flat, only exception was game vs Carlton. We then stunk it up for 3 quarters! Not sure Parliament runs anything like an AFL club. I do know that they all need to be in it together to get any sort of results though! We seem rather fractured in that space.
  2. He has already had his own bunch of assistants and that did not work! They recruited another bunch for similar results. It looks and feels like he does not listen particularly to any of them...or listens to the wrong ones. If he stays he must be basically told how to run the ship because he definitely has no clue. Why would it be a disaster say if Goodwin was put into player development with a match day boundary/bench role to pass on messages to the players, or something similar? Definition of insanity rings true with MFC, they need to get creative and work out viable solutions. Getting whole new batch of assistant coaches is useless if we have a head coach that chooses to ignore their views i reckon. He changes or he is moved sideways imo....or paid out.
  3. Have a feeling part of Richardsons role is overseeing the whole football operations and report back to the board. Coach director? Does any other club have this role?? Richardson being new to Melbourne and an astute observer, would have a view of the big picture. i would be amazed if part of his job is not to relay his "learnings" to the board. The big issue in getting rid of Goodwin is that Pert/Bartlett & Mahoney all ratified the decision. Getting rid of him entirely is pretty much an admission of ineptitude. Thinking laterally what do they do? Happy with Goodwin and direction we are going? Resounding No. Happy with our assistants and their output? Mostly No, Burgess gets a tick, but he'll be moving onto greener pastures. So left with some major decisions, clean out the assistants and get the best ones for starters. The tough decision here is what to do with Goodwin, my guess is they will move him sideways and Richardson will be head coach next year. Really can't see any way the board can admit guilt and all fall on their sword, but they can decide Simon is not the way forward for a multitude of reasons. If something like this was implemented i wonder whether Goodwin would want to stay? He would still be on ridiculous money for a diminished role. Personally i can't wait til the end of this season to see what we choose to do in this space!
  4. Crazy amount of work to create this from week to week. You deserve a medal! %change vs 2019....am i correct to assume from these stats that 4 players have improved and the rest have gone backwards? Really felt development has been an issue but this paints even more of the picture! Hannan has improved marginally. Sparrow barely played in 2019 so presume his increase is expected. Steven May a slight increase. Petracca improved dramatically. We had such a crappy year in 2019 and we have 4 players in total to improve on that. Ahhh actually just saw the % change with -20% time adjustment. This actually paints another picture. Most have improved from last year which feels marginal but more true. 2019 was awful! 10 senior players have got worse....Salem, Harmes, Fritch, T Mac, ANB, Jones, Melksham, Weideman, Jetta and Hunt. What is going on with this lot haha?!
  5. You are right in that part, we will never really know! I think all supporters just want to see the rot stop at some point, stop making excuses and choose to be great. Most of us realise that improvement is far from a linear equation. I would love to see a dozen+ players improve 10% in the offseason. We'd have reason to get excited if we were seeing more of them develop. Think we have enough unharnessed talent with room for improvement. They have to want it much more than us supporters though. We can sit back and analyse with our eyes, read statistics and extrapolate our own ideas as to what happens at club level. The "vibe" i get is quite a bit is NQR currently. My eyes tell me that part easily, the stats verify that our gameplan is flawed. Not sure who drives the standards but they are not up to scratch. Hopefully next year we get a lot more right! As Demon supporters we live in hope!
  6. Lol most likely! Stay in your protected zone but be daring and take the game even if you have nobody to kick it to! Don't overcommit to the tackle in case you get stepped! Kick it to Max he can mark everything even if he is 5v1. Send in more players at the stoppage and ignore the outsides. Be predictable in all areas of the ground, your teammates will know what you are upto! They are mentally fatiguing to watch let alone passionately support haha!
  7. Just not so sure it is all this clear cut. Petracca got angry after last season and used it to fuel his preseason and the season proper. He was not satisfied with an improved season personally, he "chose" to be better and make a real difference. He goes on to thank Darren Burgess mainly for getting even more out of him. Did Goodwin get through to Gus? Iirc viney got injured and he got a good run at being an on baller for a change. I wonder whether this was Goodwin, as the same guy looked completely disinterested when he was playing a half back/half forward/ or wing. So Maxy transformed himself, Petracca transformed himself...I bet both of these players will admit they were not mature enough to realise what it took to become elite/ fully committed to the cause with outstanding growth. Main point is without leaders driving standards for the next bunch coming through it is much harder to attain these levels no matter how talented. Still believe we need teachers of standards. We accept mediocrity far too easily. We demand too little across our entire playing list. The players drive the standards more than the coaches in well drilled teams. Currently we don't have enough real leaders to convey this message across the entire playing list. No Melbourne player has had any real success. Tomlinson probably has the most finals experience. We really need experienced coaches teaching new standards so badly. Waiting for the penny to drop individually across the team just seems whimsical without guidance.
  8. Development is key to all these guys. We badly need a Luke Hodge or Mitchell type to teach them how to be true leaders, to work on their craft, to stay humble, to teach the next group of talent coming through. Amazing that Petracca seems to have just taken it upon himself to improve with no "true" leaders around him. Langdon seems another willing to get the best out of himself. Max has tapered off imo and does very little damage and adds to our predictability. Gus i am pretty sure after low fiving Razor Ray got most of those votes gifted to him in the latter of 2018 and has not been close to the same levels since. Clarry is an exceptional talent but could really use a gun mentor. It took 12+ games this season before someone suggested he take 5 quick steps once he had the ball. We are not going anywhere without some real tutelage to our whole list. Would be gunning for a player like Selwood for a season or two with transition into coaching as soon as career is over. We lack true leadership and i doubt any of these players "demand" higher standards of the players around them. Geelong are a perfect example, recall them saying that Gary Ablett did not work hard enough. Who is going to tell Gawn or Clarry that they are not working hard enough??
  9. Totally agree! By the spirit of performance i would say 8-10 of them would be totally gutted. Another 6 really disappointed. The last 6-8 players are probably glad the season is over and they can start planning their end of season trips. Generally i think we fluff over the losses and give way too much credit when they win. These blokes are generally too easily satisfied and they rarely seem to back up a spirited performance with another. Seeing Goodwin looking smug after each win says a lot.
  10. Watched this myself and thought that something really is not right. They are not in this together at all. Only time this year i have seen the change rooms and something positive after a loss was Petracca going around patting people on the backs and saying "keep your head up" and trying to keep spirits up. Gawn is captain and should be all over this...encourage the kids. Viney is vice captain and should be all over this but is as thick as a brick, i am not sure he would see it or even know what sympathy or empathy entail. May would be absolutely gutted to be missing finals again....normally i think he would be comforting others but after that was likely feeling quite sorry for himself too. Goodwin also could show leadership with the kids but i think he is more worried about his own demise. Rudderless!
  11. I think that we tried really hard for 12 or so minutes when Freo had their biggest lead of the day . They deserve zero rewards for such effort, clearly not tired. Where is the urgency from the outset. We need to be statistical improbabilities before Goodwin makes any changes or the players to start showing some heart. i wonder where we would be if there was more consistent effort....Quarter time this should have been addressed. Just such a disappointing effort. Again.
  12. Loved much of this thread, and have found much of it fascinating reading. Our gameplan if system based is really ugly...the players do not know what to do or where to run. Seems to me there is a complete breakdown of players knowing their role within a shaky system. Would do better in all honesty with no system, just man on man and try to beat your opponent and impact when it is your turn to go. We did this for last 12 minutes of the game, had we done it the whole day we would have won by 6 goals. Tactically we really don't seem to adapt to oppositions gameplans. Any Joe blow could coach this mob with better results just playing man on man and backing our players abilities. Give me a packet of chips to do it, i would instil more passion and sytem that we are currently seeing. Would not need 4 years to implement it either!
  13. After Max fumbled that ball twice i can only imagine what Hogan said to him. "Your goal Maxy!" It infuriated Gawn but where is this degree of fight during the course of the actual game. Reactionary and weak imo.
  14. Clarkson would be a sensible choice if he has the passion still. I would actually go for an untried coach though who is highly rated. Sam Mitchell, intelligent, articulate, respected, great teacher, football smarts and having worked under Clarkson he would know a thing or two about motivating others and getting best out of them. Fascinating guy to listen to, would have the respect of players and supporters alike.
  15. None of them really get the chance....would prefer to pick McDonalds/Melkshams/Jones for way too long when they are out of form for large parts of seasons, not just within games! And when we decide to bring in some inexperienced ones we bring in too many. Or they are not quite ready. Or they play well and inexplicably are dropped the following week. Way too many favorites....reminds me of playing U16 footy with a coach who severely disliked my father and quite often did weird things with me like getting to a Grand Final then not putting me on the ground until 5 minutes into last quarter. That last quarter i was so mad i almost turned game around and had many adults approach me after the game asking why i was not on sooner. Rewards night every player got some trophy or votes within games....i got not one haha. Had played forward/ruck for most of year and had few bags of 4 and 5 goals and was far from the worst. Goody is not an Under 16's coach but i see the similarities of playing faves. Any coach worth his salt has to rise above being so petulant.
  16. Development and gameplan has sucked the life out of our list. Find Goodwin totally uninspiring to listen to, am sure the players would feel the same. They played like coach killers last night. Simon only realised his job was on the line in the last quarter haha. All fine to play a system based game but you can't try and play with no emotion or you get dished up results like vs Sydney /Freo. Interestingly was only in the last 10-12 minutes that we started playing with emotion and our energy levels seemed to rise. Emotion/passion/determination/pride are resources for motivation any smart coach should be using. Simon just aint that smart and has shown he is stubborn to change things up at all. We really need the next coach to evaluate our list, i think many are going to improve under a new reign with plenty to prove. That being said we need a big broom to clean out the clear dead wood at least. They can't be that many C to E graders on our list. Not if they were being properly developed anyway!
  17. Bomber Thompson and James Herd....let's get the gang back together!!
  18. Am going to find these pressure gauge stats they seem to paint a bigger picture of overall defensive efforts than pressure acts, tackles. The pressure gauge actually includes tackles and pressure acts. I read somewhere that 80% of time that if you win this statistic you win the game. I do agree however that ground size and style of opposition influences how high or low this overall rating may be. Be interesting to see what the pressure gauges on each game vs oppositions pressure gauge. Apparently is the 1st statistic that players look at in review. It is valued "that" highly. It is a bunch of different defensive acts into a scale that is tangible to coaches and players alike. Looking at 1%ers etc tells you not much at all.
  19. Against St Kilda we played a style that was almost unrecognizable to every other game. We "had" a game plan quite simply, it was ugly but it was well thought out. Our pressure factor would have been higher than in game against Bulldogs by far. Against the bulldogs i have to disagree. We had zero pressure from half balk to half forward....very little pressure from centre clearances to their half forward too. We gave them hundreds if not thousands of meters of uncontested ball....over 3/4 of the field for free! The pressure gauge is something i am going to analyse in great detail come the end of season. We look half decent when we pressure across the field...we look and feel utterly useless when we put no pressure on the ball carrier or even try to shut down next options. Can't just concede ground. Much like Grid Iron or rugby or even chess, this is a game of territory. No pressure and it is a cakewalk for AFL footballers.....us included!
  20. With so many players effectively playing for new contracts i can't see us losing this in dramatic fashion. Trending wise these are the type of games we tend to win after putting in a stinker. If we lost comfortably it is season over and the blowtorches are out. This match represents something called "heart". Expecting to see more heart from the new comers than players like Melksham/Fritch. This game will be a blueprint for future in terms of not picking guys that are not prepared to bust their guts. These are the learnings i expect Goodwin will gather after this game. 3 strikes your out policy is way too late. Effort>Skills in most games. It should not matter the name of players, just play your role!
  21. Yeah i agree i would give him a solid B- currently. Ability wise he should be stand out A grader. Development is key though. We need the best midfield coach that $ can buy. Oliver/Petracca/Brayshaw/Viney can all get so much better. I think we are doing these guys a disservice atm by not teaching them remotely properly. I look at our stoppage setups and they collectively have no idea what they are trying to achieve from stoppage to stoppage. Great bunch of individual talent but until they are taught some "craft" will just be bunch of individuals trying to do it all....and failing.
  22. Plenty of hope! He has been told to build on his base. He started running well after the season had started! Amazing that he managed a few games this year with the preparation he had. Harley will be stronger/faster/harder for 2021. He has been put in cotton wool for the rest of the year and rightly so. He could be of huge importance with a full preseason under his belt. He has plenty of unfinished business, would guarantee he has already locked in his next contract. Watch him grow in confidence next year. Has exceeded this years expectations of even playing senior footy. If Lockhart can't get a game with 7 changes i seriously wonder what is happening though haha!
  23. Really don't get this omission either! Guy has been thrown into backline and performed admirably. Has shown enough as a forward if there was not a spot for him in the backline. Type of player who runs hard both ways, has neat skills and shows heart. He would be one i would put under Langdons wing during the offseason and develop him into hard running winger. He knows how to help defend and has some flair in attacking half. I can't think of too many others that have the skill set required for the role.
  24. Clayton Oliver was an absolute gun before getting drafted. Can remember watching it and thinking this is the "best" highlights reel i have seen from any prospective draftee. He still has these same attributes. Doubtful Goodwin has done much to enhance Clarry. Few weeks back when he was playing like junk and it was posted somewhere that he needs to take 5 quick steps out of traffic. He was fantastic for few weeks doing that and now has reverted back to handballing backwards etc. I don't believe it was Goodwin that advised him to take those quick steps?? I believe if Sam Mitchell was teaching this kid he would already be approaching the best in the game. Clayton has been developing himself quite nicely, not sure Simon deserves any of the credit for fast tracking him though. Kid was a jet to begin with!
