I do remember this being posted after that draft. I was hoping we went for Young instead of Jackson. I still rate Young very highly and would have him on a par with Jackson. But getting Rivers over 20 spots later in the draft shows how good a recruiter JT is. It’s why I’m so excited about our draft hand this year as it’s stronger than what we had in 2019.

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
Colm replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I don’t think the Sun would be happy with that deal- they can do a whole lot better than 400 points improvement with all the clubs that will be chasing that pick. I do like you’re thinking of getting involved in a 3 way deal and think we should absolutely go after GWS pick 7. Think our own first and future first along with pick 34 should get it done. GWS would then have more than enough to make a deal with the Suns. We would then have pick 4/5 and 7 plus pick 23/24. 7 would hopefully be enough to get COS Id like to see us hold onto pick 23/24. Although it will get pushed out closed out to pick 30 There seems to be a real blanket over the players anywhere between pick 15 and 30 this year. It also seems to be a bit of a sweet spot for JT and you would think one that he rates will slide to that pick. -

The unexpected nose dive by the dogs might move them into pole position for the suns pick. I expect them to get beat by the Cats this weekend and probably end up with pick 8 and Brisbanes first round pick. They have a father/son around pick 10. -

Nice work @Nascent Couple of questions for you- 1. What do you think of Mabior Chol as a stop gap til Jefferson is ready. Saw him play the weekend which was his fist game in a lot of weeks- has falling down the pecking order and will probably fall fortune when Walters comes in. Suns could prob do with the list spot and freeing up some salary cap. 2.- Very comprehensive over view on our list in terms of positions but what are your thoughts on our attributes short comings- speed, endurance, height, marking ability, decision making and kicking ability? With overall athleticism becoming more of a factor in the modern game and being able to run out 4 quarters should we target someone like Darcy Wilson in the draft or look for better ball users than we currently have? -
They’re a lot to like about him. I see he’s up to 27 goals for the season now. Just for a comparison I had a look at Charlie Curnow’s numbers. Charlie scored 20 goals in 21 games in his second season and 34 in 20 in his third. JVR has scored his 27 goals in 18 games this season.

Make things very interesting with what the AFL will now do with regards to a hand out to North. Can’t see them giving pick two for McKay as way overs and that would totally screw over WC as North would get Reid and Curtain. North not getting an extra pick at point end of first helps us. Also North now going to get Reid is there any point in them getting access to Sanders as they are already stacked with young talent in the middle.

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

If we trade for Gold Coast first round pick we could pick him up with whatever pick ends up being our second assuming Curtain doesn’t slid. Agree with others that a quality back should be one of our priorities. In a perfect world the Suns will move up the ladder a couple of spots making their pick more obtainable for us and bang on where COS is likely to go. Cal has him at number 10 but there’s a chance that there could be 3 academy picks before him which brings him into about the 7th live pick. Can’t see him sliding to where our current second pick is. -

You’re probably right in terms of the type our list needs. We are well covered with Chandler and Kossie although the later may spend more time in the middle going forward. But what if Watson is best available at our pick and then there’s a bit of a drop off? Think Cal said he’s in the mix for the Hawks at pick 3( although Duursma’s form may have changed that). -
I’d love to be a fly on the wall for the umpires game review after a game like that. What’s the consequence for getting calls like the one a live wrong?! Do they just laugh it off and say they decided to let it go as it was the closing stages of a tight game? Do they look at every questionable(wrong) decision during a game and are happy if they keep it under a certain number? Does the amount of media attention they get in the aftermath of a game have a bearing on how in depth they review each game? You wouldn’t think they can be happy with the the amount of costly errors they make during games but there doesn’t seem to be any improvement or real plan for improvement. I’m still off the opinion that the AFL has no intention of improving the standard of umpiring as bad decision create more media attention than good ones and they feel they currently have the balance right to suit their needs.

North would be crazy not to take him at pick 3. Looks absolute quality and fills a need for them. Top 3 and maybe 4 starting to look pretty set. Anybody know how Duursma went over the weekend? Hawks are supposedly keen on him at pick 4. -

No it’s not happening. Freo can move above Suns now if they win by half decent margin tonight. Death ride will be going to the last round I think. Suns play North in Tassie and Freo play Hawks at the G. -

Suns win today and we can lock in pick 4. 🤞🤞 -
He’s probably my favourite commentator. He’s a bit vanilla at times but at least he speaks his mind and you don’t get the feeling he’s a complete AFL puppet.

The Tassie team will also spend their first year in the VFL. If we pick either of the two Tassie mids I can’t see them leaving the first year as they should be on top of their game at that stage and wasted in the VFL. So we should get 6 years out of them as a minimum and then get very well compensated should they leave. I do think we would have to rate them as a high chance to have an early impact on the starting 22. No point having them spend the majority of their first couple of years at Casey. -
Nice work PD. A bit of thought went into that. I’m not sure that’s the sort of deal that will appeal to the Suns as they would have way too many points in this draft to cover their Academy players. Then could on trade 17&23 for a good future pick and something a bit later in this draft maybe. But if we were looking at doing a 3 way trade we would probably need to do some of this leg work for them.

I saw that interview and found it interesting that he brought up the point that he had managed to avoid serious injury for the year, perhaps an indications of his mindset. I think it will take at least two more full preseasons to get his body and tank built up enough for AFL games. Can’t be easy to try and do both at the same time- put on muscle while increasing your aerobic ability.

Having listened to a couple of interviews Sanders has done since winning the Larke medal he seems to be good friend with Sheezel. If they get access to him I can’t see them going for McKercher as well as they are already stacked with midfield talent. -

I had wondered if we would consider dropping back if it improved our second pick. Perhaps pick up two out of O’Sullivan, Duursma, Wilson, Caddy or Sanders. Problem is that they’re possibly 4 players that are NGA or academy that could go in the top 10-12 so you don’t want to be too far back. GWS currently have picks 6&11 and probably the only team that could make it work. -

Nice work SONS. Couple of questions for you. You have Moir higher than most of the other rankings, has hit hit a bit of form? Also have you seen much of Will Dawson and if so what your thoughts on him? I thought he looked pretty good in the two games he played in defence for Vic country. -

It’s a tough game to watch really. I think I want the Lions to win but when they just kicked that goal to take the lead I felt dirty. Perhaps a draw?! -
God damn it. I was behind the goals today and had a great view of Pettys goal just after half time not long before he went off. It was a fantastic goal for lots of reasons- the ball looked like coming in just before hand and I watched him take his defender and then put body on Melksham defender to free up space for Melksham. When the ball wasn’t delivered he faked a lead and then led into space and took a great make before kicking a tough kick. Awesome goal. I turned to my partner and said if he plays like that for rest of season we win the flag. Two mins later I watched him hobble off ☹️

Holy moly, the pies( team of the century) season is starting to unravel a bit.
-
On route to the waterfront now for a couple of pre game refreshments. Let’s hope for a better start than last time we played North here. We were behind at half time with Tommo doing his ACL in first quarter. Dees by 45 with Petty to kick 4. Edit. Just looked at the betting odds for the above. $11. I’ll have a bit of that I think.
-
I’ve got that warm fuzzy feeling. Pies looking very venerable at the wrong time of year. I really hope this is their style of play and long season catching up with them and not due to a loading block.
-
With no rotations left I don’t even want Hawks to kick away just yet. Keep the tempo up and ruin the the pies in the last 12 mins. Edit. They just kicked away😊
