I was already of the opinion that we must recruit a quality key defender via trade or the draft and that was before Pettyās breakout game at the weekend. If he can continue to play well weāll up front then I think the need is even greater. I know we have Disco and Adamās in the twos but are they going to provide the quality we need to replace May and Petty. Tommo has done ok since he came in but heās close to the end and rumoured to be looking for a trade. A case could be made that we need to bring in a couple of Key defenders. If we trade for Reid I think we still have to have enough capital to snag a very talented key defender as well. So we either need Tim Lamb to works some serious magic to secure both or we need JT to be able to pick one up a bit later in the draft like he did with Petty.

PREGAME: Rd 21 vs North Melbourne
Iām happy for us to rest a couple of players against both North and the Hawks in a couple of weeks. Cats were able to do it last year and still win games and had players in great shape for finals. Itās not like we are resting them and bringing average players in. Hibberd, Grundy, Sparrow are quality replacements. If Sparrow isnāt fit this week Iād hold off until the Hawks game to rest Viney.

Agree, already looking good player. Has done well at centre bounces this last quarter. Can see why JT wanted him so badly.

Farewell Brodie Grundy
He did mention that the payment structure would be complicated to work out by was confident it wouldnāt stop the deal from getting done. Really if he does decide to leave it would be down to his management and whatever club decides to take him to sort that end of it out as I think we would be reluctant for him to leave.

Farewell Brodie Grundy
Damian Barrett( I know I know) on the radio just now, very adamant the Grundy is gone this trade window. Sounded more like he has info thatās the case other than just speculating.

Great stat and something has defined the narrative around the pies all season. In a lot of game teams should be out of sight of them before the last quarter starts. Hopefully all the close games are now starting to catch up on them.

Iād be surprised if McKay is worth that sort of money. Iād rate all 4 of our key defenders ahead of him( Tommo maybe the same). If heās worth $800k whatās Lever, May and Petty worth? Clubs might be willing to pay a bit more considering they donāt have to give up draft capital but still canāt see him earning near $800k. FWIW I donāt mind if they do give them pick 3 for him, just donāt want them getting high end compensation and access to Sanders on top of the two picks they were given last year. As I remember clubs werenāt happy that we got pick 3 for Frawley and it was seen as being more or less a priority pick.

As other have stated Frawley was a better player than McKay. It looks like the AFL is going to look after North anyways. The question now is will they give them pick 3 and access to Sanders. Effectively two top 10 picks. This would greatly compromise the top end of this draft and our pick 4( hopefully). They already have traded out an early second round pick from this draft that was given to them last year.

Points for father/son wonāt be an issue. They already have 2nd round pick and can do a 3rd round pick swap with Suns and their future 3rd. Might pick up a lesser pick during trade period either or if they were stuck they could go go into points deficit for next year. Really wouldnāt be hard for them to trade with Suns and be able to have enough points for father/son.

I canāt see us getting the Suns pick for that. Other teams are better placed than us I think. The dogs have two first round picks and a father/son that will be around their picks. By trading uk they get a top 6 pick and their F/S. I do like the thinking though as I think we need a Key defender so if we do the deal to get Reid we need to keep a decent pick for this year as well. If the Suns lose Flanders this year then they may not need as much points for their academy players and may be interested in a future pick as part of the deal.

Iād be surprised if the AFL gave them both access to Sanders and pick 3. Would be a massive hand out. It does seem like they are going to give them something though so maybe access to Sanders and end of first round compo?! Regardless of what picks they end up with, would they take two more midfielders? They already have Sheezel, Wardlaw, LDU and Powell as mids who went in the top 5. Simpkin was another first round pick. If they get Sanders Iām not so sure they will take another mid with a high end pick as they could do with another key forward along side Larkey and another key defender with McKay going. Even if they bring in someone like Tommo they need more young talent coming through in key positions. Im wondering if Mckercher is the one we should target. Trade up for Norths pick.

Nick Watson
If we donāt trade up for Reid and Watson is on the board at our then heās probably best available at our pick and we would have to really consider him. I wasnāt in favour of getting another small forward on but he has won me over. Kossie and him would be a nightmare for other teams defences. Even with his small frame Iād expect him to have a big impact at AFL level next year. If Kossie continues to spend more time in the middle then it would make even more sense. I do agree with others that we would want to have another top 10 pick to draft for needs with our second one.

If North are given access to Sanders then this might make sense. Canāt see them taking 2 mids as they are already well stocked. Moving back from 2 to 4/5 might still allow them to get the player they want and pick up an extra pick at the same time.

PODCAST: Rd 19 vs Adelaide
More a question about the remainder of our home and away season. We are 2 games and a good percentage clear from 5th spot with games against North and Hawks in our last 5 games. Do we start to manage a few players in order to have them cherry ripe for finals. Chandler looks like he has benefitted from a stint in the twos. Jack Viney, Max, Judd, maybe even Trac are all players that could probably do with a rest before finals both to avoid injury and have them cherry ripe come September. Thoughts?!
