  1. And you're allowed to do that under pressure, which Picken would have put him under if he didn't STOP chasing the football and start appealing for a free kick. Let's face it though, players ALSO do it for the out of bounds rulings too. It's contentious because it's swung momentum in a key moment. Mills is being punished for being super intelligent in recognising that he was being chased by Picken who is a lot faster than him and would've layed a disabling tackle on him if he'd gathered it.
  2. I'm not a fan of this 'would've won anyway' or 'first to the ball' stuff to explain umpiring discrepancies. Umpires can effect momentum and can effect results. Obviously club officials and players won't make those excuses as they're taboo to mention, but footy fans shouldn't shy away from making those judgements if they think umpires can and do have an effect on a match. Another example i would give was the 2015 prelim of WCE vs North. North were steamrolling them and all of a sudden the umpires must've gifted the Eagles about 3 goals in the 2nd and it was back on. In the grand scheme of the final match points, Eagles easily won, but the momentum shift was extremely telling. I think the umpires robbed us of a great victorian aggressive mcg grand final stoush between the Hawks and North that year who had a great rivalry. But always people will fall back on 'Eagles would've won anyway' when that is not certain.
  3. Now we are consigned to listening to collingwood and buckley discussion saturating all media. Forget crunch time on saturday morning. They'll dedicate an hour to it.
  4. I blame some of his teammates too for giving it to him under pressure instead of kicking long inside fifty, i guess his 'presence' is having a negative effect now.
  5. Prestia has vindicated our recruiting team tonight. Has been fairly average and burnt his teammates on two occasions with two misses.
  6. The Melbourne supporters behind me had no clue who half our players were too and merely screamed out 'kick it long' all day, your anecdote about a few supporters representing an entire club proves nothing, I doubt many Melbourne fans could pick out StKilda players. My mother barracks for the Saints and knows all of her own and Melbournes players too. Not interested in this one eyed superiority complex supporter garbage. Every club has dumbell supporters.
  7. "That lofted handball over his shoulder to Jones who goaled on his left was just footy porn." Bontompelli did the same thing on Friday night. All night. To be honest, I'm not really a fan of the super-fast handball over the head that is more using the sling of the arm to give it momentum and getting a fist onto it to fool the umpires. Great that he is doing the Bulldogs style as it's the only way to clear a pack over your head with a tackle coming at you, and we'll need to do it to beat them. but it's on the edge. Currently umpires allowing it.
  8. Atrocious defensive game so far. I'm ashamed that we lost to Carlton last year. Makes it hard to sledge Carlton fans.
  9. One of the biggest games of the year for Bernie Vince i would've imagined if he's sticking on Riewoldt for most of the day. According to http://www.afl.com.au/news/teams anyway, another one says Jordan Lewis on Riewoldt?
  10. It seems our losing streak against St Kilda isn't the only hoodoo going around: https://www.reddit.com/r/AFL/comments/5zub8p/gotta_poll_against_them_all_who_will_be_the_first/
  11. The undersold aspect of the Spencer/Gawn thing, is that our forward line lacks a freakish athletic beast/resting ruck monster that can nullify an outnumbered contest and at least bring the ball to ground. Hogan for all of his potential, is going to be defeated more often than not if our disposal into the forward line is not advantageous to his abilities and goes to a pack with Hogan or Watts up against an 2 or 3 swarming defenders. Hogan, Pederson, Wiedemann & Watts just is not a physically imposing and 'awkward for the opposition' combination, yet. Having Gawn/Spencer rest down there throws in an element of unpredictability and second guessing. This is the whole basis of Josh Jenkins game, and he's been really effective.
  12. Well, I was conflicted about going backpacking this year and missing the footy and thought saving another year of scraps was a good choice. But after seeing the disposal against the Eagles and the zone being cut up I think now would be an advantagous time to do 9-12 months of travel while I'm young and watch our games from afar, hopefully only missing a final or two. We're certainly capable of going far if everything clicks and we get on a roll, but it's extremely unlikely we can seriously challenge for a flag this year. Better to come back next year to go to the mcg and etihad games, as a years development should see this team make a serious assault on the finals for a few years. Apologies if this is too cynical. Go Dees from the international pubs!
  13. That really depends on how much your soul is worth. I'd put an extra $100 to 200 on it so you're at least gaining some level of pleasure on a Melbourne loss. Anything less and it's a bit hollow isn't it?
  14. Application for New Nickname: 'Stretch Limo' he cruises through traffic like he's on wheels
  15. Let's just embrace the full red kit with a little blue and grey! Could also become iconic. Carlton are the ones that have appropriated the navy blue. Essendon have moved away from the dominant red strip. It may look quite silly, but who cares. Hawthorn have embraced the power ranger silliness. I think they've been trolling the AFL for years anyway. Go full ugly and the opposition will fear us more!
  16. That was a ridiculous looking final, even the glare from the sun added to the confusion.
  17. Somewhere in between that and the darker grey. Haha. That's pretty bad. Worse than white.
  18. It would be better if it was a darker grey or dark silver. White or light-grey is terrible. I think a dark grey not only looks nicer, but mixes better with red and blue and maintains them as the main 2 colours. If you put a white or lighter grey in, then all three colours just turn it into a 3 coloured guernsey like the Dogs or Saints. I'd rather we choose all red and a little blue than have white in our uniform. This grey, but maybe slightly lighter for the benefit of the light-clash strip. In all fairness to our graphic designer, our logo is awesome and i can see where they're coming from with this clash strip: Get that logo in the forefront and have our team build a brand with good football, so that logo becomes iconic. Perhaps why they chose to go with the full logo on the front and don't care too much about the background and the lines dividing the colours. I think the designers want that logo to be the first thing an oppposition player sees when they look up to see who's bumped them.
  19. I guess we now know where he gets his puppy fat.
  20. How does Garlett go on the wing? I've never seen him there and I'm curious if he could play more time up ground as an outside burst runner IF we drafted Alsopp to be a goal sneak and could alternate w Kennedy in that pos. Salem could then also play forward. I'm guessing it's a tank issue for Garlett? I still recall the Salem match winner V Essendrug. Salem could be a sharpshooting Bruest, with a killer delivery at half forward and a dead eye shot. He could also alternate on the wing or defensivively switch for unpredictablity
  21. Don't forget Jordan Lewis bringing those 3rd man up skills over to us. Should add a new dimension to our midfield rucking stocks.
