Game plans, tactics and all that jazz
Why don't they bring it though? Until the game is played and coached by robots the issue will always be more complicated than the 'system'. A good game plan can look decidedly crappy if the players don't understand it or aren't invested in it. Are ours? To me Goodwin is a very poor match day coach because he has poor situational awareness - he reacts far too late to what is unfolding before him. We had one of our poorest defensive quarters for the year off the back of a 7 point half time lead and three wins in a row where we'd smashed teams in second halves due to our conditioning - where was our momentum going into the second half? Two minutes into the 3rd quarter it was obvious there was a fire in the kitchen - a coach with good situational awareness would have reacted instinctively - an even better one would have understood and anticipated what would happen next. - Bevo was always going to try something new and it had to start with Pressure - christ we saw it in the pre-game coverage with his boxing theme (get off the canvas and go again). The Bulldogs game plan falls apart under pressure - the third quarter had to be our highest pressure quarter of the year if we were going to win, it was one of our poorest. This is a rare occasion where I actually don't think this is about the players, I think its about the preparation and mindset and that is specifically on the coach. Flipping magnets is a euphemism for a "Hail Mary", it isn't about flipping magnets its about arresting the oppositions momentum - something Goody has a very poor track record with.

POSTGAME: Rd 13 vs Western Bulldogs
Sorry I can't agree, it was patently obvious at half-time that Bevo would try something different as Dunkley in the ruck wasn't working (he said so himself) and yet we actually had no response to any of the changes. I think sometimes supporters see what they want to see to, but from where I sit I we're behind the Bulldogs and the Saints, I think at this pace Carlton and Gold Coast will overtake us next year as well. There's a lot not working and I think it emanates from the coaches box.

AFL Braces for Nightmare 2021 Scenario
3 possible scenarios in order of likelihood: 1. They've developed/stolen an effective vaccine that may result in catastrophic unintended consequences ie. it makes COVID worse. 2. They've developed a placebo vaccine that actually does very little, but has little unintended consequences. 3. They've developed/stolen an effective vaccine that has few unintended consequences. FWIW I'm a glass half empty kind of guy - and considering we've never discovered a vaccine for any other corona virus i'm betting the most likely scenarios in order of likelihood are: 1. There will be no vaccine 2. The vaccine will only have a limited shelf-life in terms of immunisation 6-12 months. 3. The vaccine will be effective and offer immunity for longer than 12 months. I won't even go into how you immunise 7.8 billion people.

The 2020 Trade Period
Nup. We won't get a compensation pick if we sign a RFA ourselves.

Play Jack Viney forward
Yeah sorry i was mentioning those stats not in a mdfield sense, but to demonstrate why Viney going forward would help the game plan.
-
Play Jack Viney forward
Viney is first and foremost a midfielder, but one of the problems with the game plan is that we still lack enough defensive fotwards to continually lock the ball in the forward line. Viney is ranked as elite for stoppage clearances, contested possessions and goal assists. If it helps balance the side for him to spend more time forward it's worth a go.

CHANGES: Rd 12 vs Collingwood
Overrated by those here or the FD, because i bet London to a brick he won't get dropped.

CHANGES: Rd 12 vs Collingwood
I think a lot of supporters had a rather optimistic view of Vanders disposal. It's never been great and he's had a couple of brain fades in the last couple of weeks with free kicks, but if he played this week with a fractured cheekbone snd eye socket no way does he get dropped next week. Goodwin loves him for a reason and he plays the tall defensive winger role that both Jones and Tomlinson don't do as well as Vanders. He crashes into packs and hurts the opposition, that's his role. Others can worry about score involvement AVB is there to worry the oppo.

CHANGES: Rd 11 vs North Melbourne
He'll probably be managed. Given his history I'd be horrified if we picked him to play in four days time. Goody's pretty much said he's the only bloke that needs to be managed off short breaks. If he wasn't managed he may need to be dropped anyway, he offers nothing defensively at the moment - that's not so much a knock on him, just a recognition that he hasn't played a lot of footy in the last three years.

Deep Dive into Dees Issues
Traded for Pick 31 which we used on Bayley Fritsch. like for like...

Jason Taylor
The OP was made by someone I had on ignore ... so carry on.

TEAMS: Rd 08 vs Brisbane
Happy to stand corrected, but I think Jay may have been recruited as a half-back flanker though, whereas Nev was pretty much a forward when he was drafted.

You missed David Allday!

Closer to the end
This is my 40th year barracking for the club. In that time they've finished bottom four more times than they've made the finals. I can hardly will myself to watch them anymore. I could have barracked for North Melbourne like my father and seen premierships or Essendon like my mother and seen premierships or Hawthorn like my older brother and seen premierships, but I picked Melbourne ...phark!

CHANGES: Rd 04 vs Geelong
There not being much footy on after rd 1, I watched the replay a number of times. Brown grassed five marks that were relative sitters (ie not contested). None of that was due to the delivery, he just wasn't very good in that game - he was dropped for a reason.

Intra-Club Game: Round 3
Not necessarily he's just not in the starting midfield, best 22, but not starting in the square. Starting midfield is usually Gawn, Oliver, Viney and Tracc. Can't see him pushing any of those out ATM and Langdon and Tomlinson have the wings locked up.

What makes you think 2021 is going to be any better?

Stats Files - 2020
Good work RN. I don't know where one would find the pressure rating data, but it was mentioned on the coverage that our pressure rating was over 200 for the first quarter, which only happened once in 2019 and was a large reason we went 42 points up. The second quarter it was mentioned we'd dropped back to 160. No mention what the third and fourth quarters were, but I imagine they were probably even lower. We clearly need to improve on our consistent application of defensive pressure. I noticed the TOG by Gus as well, but another possible explanation is that they maybe managing the midfield loads after the extended lay off and it was Gus who got more bench time - so it will be interesting to see what his TOG next week is.
