2023 Player Reviews: #41 Judd McVee
You gotta wonder how a player of such undeniable talent can come so close to missing out on being drafted! Would love to know what the issues were with his game because he is playing with skill, poise and an IQ that puts him amongst the best young players in the league.

POSTGAME: Rd 03 vs Port Adelaide
Fantastic team performance against a genuinely good opposition at a hostile home ground! In particular, I’m so happy for Benny Brown, Tom McDonald and Marty Hore. Three guys who have been completely written off, playing pivotal roles in the team. All three are thriving and supporting their younger teammates. Didn’t see them being capable of this level of football!

Rising Star Nomination for The Duke?
Agreed. Early in the season, selectors reward stats over impact. He, along with Howes will get one if they play most of the season. Both have been fantastic!

Jack Viney 200 Games
Legend has it, that spray was after his first game, Round 1 vs Port Adelaide. That debut is my go-to memory of Jack Viney. A kid standing tall when all around him were wilting under pressure. 22 disposals and a goal whilst on the receiving end of a flogging. Deserved the flag as much as anyone.

Laurie Extends for 2 More Years
There’s definitely something there… Seems to be a confidence player and can get a little fun shy on the big stage. This may hopefully give him the belief that clearly the football department have in him. Yet to see it at senior level, but I trust the judgement of the people who signed off this, so go get ‘em Bill!!

POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs Hawthorn
Thought he played well, without dominating. Good to see him getting a bit more involved in contests whilst rucking. If he’s to continue to be used in the role, the next step in his development is to get more involved around the ground. Pick up some link up positions and provide more of an option for hit-ups around the ground. A few more possessions around the ground will make him a more damaging player and not just a quick chop-out. Even if they’re cheapies, it’s reward for his effort and good for the confidence.

NON-MFC: Round 02
May be top of the iceberg. Taylor called a beauty and wore a lot of criticism for it. Don't think we need to clap for Jackson this year.

NON-MFC: Round 02
He’s a freak; but, sadly, we knew that. When he starts to run with the ball a bit and kick more he’ll tear matches apart.

Wardlaw is going to be a real player. Great to watch some of these Nth kids.

NON-MFC: Round 02
I’ve been a big fan of Adelaide’s list build but they are looking a mile off at the moment. Maybe this is the one step back before the big jump next year; but from this two game sample, they have some big application issues.

Training Ground?
Was buying some guest passes for the Hawthorn match this Saturday when I saw this donation link for their new facility. There must be a massive amount of casual money being donated to their club through this method, yet I have never been asked for a single dollar from the MFC to fund, or find our new home base (wherever and whenever that may be). When I see almost every club in the league forging ahead with their new training bases, some of which are now on their second training bases, I fear we are a long, long way off anything concrete. Why are we not rattling some tins and generating some buzz and excitement?

The Rise and Fall of VFL Park
Went to a few games out there and graced the turf in a VicKick game or two. Attended the Lighting Premiership there in '96. Traffic, parking and relative isolation gave it an almost lonely feel. My major issue was the seating arrangement and the huge space between the boundary line and the fence, made you feel too far away from the action. This is something that Marvel does quite well, most likely in direct response.

Jed Adams Re-Signs for 2 More Years
This thread needs some more love! May again showed on the weekend how important he is to our structure and his long term replacement is very important for any sustained success. Jed is coming along nicely and offers a bigger body than Turner in a post-May world. Good luck! (No pressure)

Crowd numbers - my perspective
Crowd was fine for a Sunday afternoon against the Dogs. 1:00pm is a challenging timeslot too with kid's morning activities! I was sitting ground level in the Southern Stand and it was very, very difficult. I offered the kids at halftime that we could go home if they were struggling, but they were keen to see it through. When the sun was behind clouds for much of the second half, a few thousand people emerged from the shade and started to fill the ground level. Numbers were much better than what the TV made them look on an unbelievably hot day.

Jesse Hogan
Good for him - very happy he’s in a better place and playing good football. Credit to the Giants and their program; people very rarely turn things around by themselves.

Angus Brayshaw Forced into Retirement
I’m still confused by the language and the vastly different descriptions of exactly how Gus’s ‘retirement’ panned out. Was it a forced retirement where the AFL said that he had to be medically retired, or was it completely Brayshaw’s decision? I have heard both of these scenarios described in the media. If it was the AFL’s call, then he should be paid entirely outside of the cap.

NON-MFC: Opening Round
Any loss for Brisbane, especially at the GABBA this year is a good thing; regardless of who it’s against. That place is a fortress and their list is very, very strong. Carlton wins can be pegged back as they share the G and their home ground advantage. Any loss for Lions at home is worth its weight in gold for any team that aspires to be top 4. (Which I’m hoping we still do!) Long, long season ahead and no one would be writing off the lions, just like no one should be writing off us either.

Forgotten Star Confident He Can Bounce Back
Even in 2021 he struggled to get his knee/body right. We got lucky that he was cherry ripe in time for finals and then played a vital role in our flag run. Started ‘22 in brilliant touch, then missed a slab of games and struggled on return. In the final against Brisbane, he could barely move. His talent is still there, but his body won’t let him do the things he wants to do. Fingers crossed we can get a few games out of him, but I’d be bowled over if it’s more than 10-12.

2024 Opening Round Team
That’s very quick for an ACL! Is LARS still a thing? Was all the rage a few years ago, but never really hear about it now…

Thurin Centre
Very impressive and well deserved for our men’s and women’s teams. It’s great that we have a facility like this in Casey but, once again, I’m disappointed by the club’s fundraising efforts. Seems like we hit-up a small group of wealthy benefactors but very rarely ‘rattle the tins’ for facilities such as this one or any future high performance base (ie Caulfield). Its great that we have generous members but I think we could do much better in broadening our fundraising base.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Monday 12th February 2024
Being in full training 3.5 weeks out from our first match surely puts Oliver in the mix for Sydney…
