It's a ground where you need the courage to run and the ability to hit up targets. We don't have the cattle with the engine or the will or the skill. We should win the contests but unsure if there will be enough contests to matter. Expecting it could get ugly.

Major Shortcomings still unresolved
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Soidee's topic in Melbourne Demons
The issue isn't leg speed, the issue is mature leadership. Leg speed is overrated, its speed of ball movement and execution that is important. Our speed of ball movement looked fine in the first but that and our execution went to water under pressure in the second. Why? Because we lack mature leadership on the ground that can rally and coach mid quarter to change momentum of a game. No disrespect but Jones is not a natural leader or on field general, he has done his best to lead with his work ethic as the closest option we have had. We do not have mature players to direct us out of situations or that demand the follow me attitude of the great leaders (although Viney is on the way). NB: Blind Freddy should be able to see our improvement not just in where we are wins and % at this time of year but in game style and list (which is still the youngest on the park week in week out). -
Does not have the skill or engine to be a first up mid. Lacks the aggression and impact he had as a high half forward last year. Will be good depth next year.

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 17
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
They were ahead of us in aggression at the ball and man by a few levels. As soon as their pressure lifted in the second we did not have enough confidence in our game plan and went back to hand balling to the next stationary person under pressure. Viney aside, we lacked leadership again. It all felt very deja vu to me. -
Jones is a player who leads through footy effort and action not natural leadership acts. He certainly looked like he was playing lame today but that does not stop you using voice, directing play or putting your body on the line when the time is there. He played silent today and at times went into self preservation which is the biggest disappointment. Viney is a natural leader who will demand success and players come with him but lets learn from previous errors and not pull the trigger too early on that transition.

I forgot the bombers game. It was Saints, Dogs and Power I was referencing. -
MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 17
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think its because they have cost us on at least 3 occasions this season with poor team selection. This again does not feel right and I hope it does not cost us. -

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 16

That was a danger game, we took control early then did what was needed in trying conditions. If we had kicked straight would have won by plenty. Great effort on a 6 day break. T.Mac's most complete game in a very long time. Grimes and M Jones even with their flaws both ran themselves into the ground. Expect us to get slaughtered next. -

Christian Salem : What's the Latest?
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to hoopla's topic in Melbourne Demons
it would be out of him and the Bont for number 1. Daylight between those two and the others, -
I don't think we will cut too deep this year. With trading out of the first round we pick late in what appears to be an inconsistent draft and we have a young list already. Matt Jones will be there next year, there is plenty of others that will go before.

These threads are always a great check as to whether I was at a different game, whether it looked different on tv, whether I have good or bad bias against certain players or whether I know nothing about the game. Aside from the general call for Dawes out the calls for M Jones and Billy Stretch when they run all day and made good decisions is funny. Calls for Frost when he played on arguably the in form power forward in the comp and kept him to 5 marks and 2 goals is funny. I would play one less tall forward (due to Dawes form) and one less tall back against Freo (as not needed) and take in more run. Out: Dawes, O-Mac In: Grimes, Oliver

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 15
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
We made too many errors but did it being attacking, I can live that. We can't sustain run both ways like that for full quarters but I look forward to the day we do. Anyone that thinks we have not improved look at our age and then watch us dismantle quality mature side in the second. The more we mature and the more they play together the more of that you will see. Hunt and Watts immense. Great to have Jeffy back. N jones needs to simplify his game and Tyson needs Trac to teach him how to give and get with one motion. We're getting just frustrated that we can't take a top 4 scalp to prove it. -
I look forward to your justification. Was it him running himself into the ground whilst maintaining 90% DE that did it for you?

This game comes down to us winning the contested ball (our strength) well, controlling play from there and then limiting their run and set up off half back when they have it (their strength). Let them get easy ball into their forwards who are serious quality and this will be a smashing. Limit that and we can win this.

If you think Crouch has better speed than Jones, Harmes, Stretch or BenKen you need to look again.
