Win for Melbourne, as club secures training venue bear heart of city

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/melb...9234761396.html

I would be keen to go after Warnock if we do indeed go after Rich in the draft and forget about Nait.

It is nice to see some positive articles for a change, however there is a chilling warning at the end of the second one, if our supporters don't turn up then the club will have to sell games again.

The aritcle soes not explain how we are securing a training venue.

All I understand is that Olympic park will be turned into a football ground for Collingwood...so how does that benefit Melbourne?

The way i read it was that VIS have been using olympic park and half the lexus centre. Our training ground will be developed at olympic park, while collingwood takeover the rest of the lexus centre. Also, our home facilities will be in the stands of the rectangular ground.

Is that right????

The 6pm news last night did mention that 'Collingwood' will develop Olympic Park as it's new football training venue.....no mention of the Dee's

My guess is Collingwood builds its oval at Olympic Park (next to the Lexus Centre) and we train on Gosh's Paddock (which is next to the new staduim). Sound right?

Article did not explain it well.

Do we even wan Warnock?

Yes we do. Will be number 1 ruckman next year with PJ backup/forward with Jamar and Meesen selling records out the front.

The Minister's announcement covered off training facilities for both Melb & Wobbles fc's

Bit stupid, let him have a game before you right him off.

If we draft Rich because of Warnock we are stupid....

Sorry to say, while Rich looks like a gun midfielder, he is just going to be Deledio, Murphy Gibbs..... Great future midfielders. But I would rather the Kruezer, Franklin, Luenburger KPP any day.

What if we draft Rich because he's the best player?

We could have taken a risk and picked Kepler Bradley instead of Brock. Just because they're different doesn't necessarily mean that they're the best player.

I'm waiting until the under 18 championships to get a better idea.

Bit stupid, let him have a game before you right him off.

It was a tongue in cheek remark. I understand he has had an injury but he has not been impressive so far.

I would have PJ as a tall marking forward, Warnock on and off the bench as our no. 1 ruckman and Naita as a midfielder who can ruck. That should be our plan.

You're right NN, if we get him, should be played off a wing, end to end, he'd dominate...

I hate this, I want to win games but if we don't we get a shot at getting a 21yr old 206cm ruckman and NN.

Conflicted, I guess you could say.

We neda number one ruckmen and Robbie is that man. Skinny but IMO he did very well last year.

I'll have a look at Jason Laycock as well. Talented but struggling with Hille. Plays well as the lone ruckman.

Laycock is a lazy footballer. i have some essendon mates who absolutely hate him. we don't want him.

Next year our rucks could be:

White, R.Warnock, Naitanui, P.Johnson, Jamar, Meesan and Spensor.... seems like a lot true.

however keep in mind that by the end of 2009

White- retired

Jamar- delisted

Meesan- delisted as a waste of a trade. not a footballer, only an athlete.

Spensor- might be delisted...let's be honest 95% of rookie drafted ruckman end up getting the chop

therefore we'll have Warnock (22), PJ (24), Naitanui (19) and Maybe Spensor if he comes on.

....

now imagine if we draft Rich instead of Naitanui, and don't target Warnock.

By end of 2009 our rucks will be:

PJ and Spensor and we'll be forced to give Jamar another contract....

If that's the case we'll prob probably end up having to use atleast 2 draft picks every year until we finnally find a good number 1 ruck.

If we're clever we'll fix the problem now, and be set for the next 10 years.

Naitanui is a must. he looks like an absolute freak.

our midfield is also coming along alright for the future with Mclean, Sylvia, Jones, Grimes and Morton to form the core in the future- +we'll probably draft a couple of midfielders using pick 17 and 18

Whats the contract status of Travis Boak? Bailey knows him and he is a gun. If he is out of contract at seasons end we should contact his manager and push our case strongly. The chances are he wouldnt leave Port for nothing but I would rather we tried for bigger fish than Warnock.

If we were to acquire Boak and draft Rich or Naita we would have an excellent on ball nucleus with a balance of size, speed and hardness.

Naitanui is a must. he looks like an absolute freak.

According to Carlton's recruiting manager Wayne Hughes, Naitanui is a freak, and will bring people in through the gates.

Hopefully we can convince Warnock to come to Melbourne. We should screw Fremantle, and offer them a 3rd round draft pick, and tell them to take it, or we'll pick him up in the PSD.

I couldn't help but be impressed with our Warnocks game on Sunday. One game doesn't make a career, but I thought he showed quite a bit, especially with the ability to hit targets. I, like many thought he wasn't going to cut it, but if he was to continue in that manner and become a solid AFL player, then the attraction for his brother to come to us would be even more so.

I like the idea of Warnock and Natanui leading our ruck in the coming years.

A couple of midfielders, or (please, please, please) a marking forward. One of these if available maybe (Hurley would be unlikely to slide to our priority pick at 17):

Prospectus 08

Michael Hurley Key Defender 192cm

Northern 1/06/1990 88kg

Hurley is a proven performer at both ends of the ground and produced impressive numbers in the 2007 season. In 17 games for Northern in the TAC Cup he averaged 18 disposals per game playing in key positions at either end of the ground. When up forward he was always a threat, being a multiple goal kicker five times including a haul of 6. He spent most of his time in defence, however having six or more rebound 50s on seven occasions and averaging four spoils and two marks from opposition kicks per game. He is strong overhead highlighted by his tally of 29 contested marks, of which he took at least one in all games. He dominated at full back for Vic Metro in the 2007 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, totalling four more rebound 50s than any other player.

Aaron Cornelius Key Forward 191cm

Tasmania 29/05/1990 81kg

Cornelius has proven in his junior career to date to be one of the best marks for his age. Since taking nine contested marks for Tasmania in the opening game of the 2006 NAB AFL Under 16 Championships, Cornelius has continued that form to average more than three per game in 14 games of under-age football for his state in the past two years. At age 17 he made his debut for Tasmania in the VFL late last season and took the equal most marks of anyone in the 2007 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships.

Tom Hill Key Forward 196cm

Northern 7/04/1991 73kg

Hill is predominantly a key forward who scored six goals for Vic Metro at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. He averaged 13 disposals, five marks and three inside 50s per game at the carnival, and also totalled 4 score assists in the three matches. He had elite disposal efficiency of 82% and was strong overhead with a total of five contested marks.

Lewis Johnstone Key Forward 192cm

North Adelaide 3/03/1991 87kg

Johnstone is a power forward who averaged 13 disposals and three marks at the 2007 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. While his numbers at that carnival were only modest, he spent the 2007 season in the SANFL U-17's where he produced some impressive performances. He kicked 31 goals in 20 games and was named in the best players on seven occasions, proving to be not only strong overhead but also at ground level.

I've also been keeping tabs Blake Broadhurst, a Robertson type doing impressive things in the WAFL.

Be very happy to get one of these with Naita at the draft.

I work with Hurleys dad and he is getting a lot of interest especially from the Dees. He played on last years full forward for WA recently and beat him and 2 weeks ago was playing full back for the Knights (I assume it was the knights), was shifted to CHF and snared 6 goals. He is a beautiful kick and well balanced. Consequently he is on the radar for a lot of recruiters.

Problem is we would need another pick as he will probably go top 10.

Top 3 even, considered to be the best KPP in this years draft

Going by what I have heard Cornelius has been a bit disappointing so far this year in the VFL - still young though so may be ok.

Stuff the third round draft pick, it was daylight robbery what they did to us in the Farmer trade, nah, they can get stuffed. Just pick up Warnock in PSD if he's available.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
