read on bigfooty that chris connolly was on the radio and pretty much said sampi wont be ready this year givin his condition and by 2009 he could be ready. so its pretty much saying good bye ashley sampi. its a bummer coz he is a very talented player when fully fit is damaging.

wonder who we will pick up now?

I heard the interview with Connolly on SEN, and got the same impression.

Unless Connolly is trying to pull a shifty, and scare off Carlton and Richmond from taking him in the PSD, it's way too big a gamble to pick Sampi if he's unable to make a contribution till 2009. Connolly did mention that there were plenty of talented kids still available, which seemed to put a nail in Sampi's coffin.

does anyone know where i can hear the CC interview or the DB one???

Smokscreen

We will take him

strange.. I heard that interview and got a distinctly diferent impression.. He certainly didnt say we wont get him...not that we would. What he said was that Sampi was trainng as good as he could.. had improved and they would be all looking at the PSD and Rookie soon.

Certainly didnt sound great for him ( sampi ) .. wasn't a categorical No either.

just my take..

who cares. sampi is an ordinary footballer who said at wce he had no passion for playing afl. I dont care if jones said that, people that have no passion shouldnt play. hes a byron pickett all over again. not worth the risk which is huge

Wouldn't talking down a player actually increase their chances of being drafted by Richmond? They still have two months to go before they get CAC.

Smokscreen

We will take him

i dont think we have any choice, we need a small foward to release davey into the midfield. maric is going to need time.

Smokscreen

We will take him

Smokescreen or Sidescreen? That's how big he is.

How often do we bemoan the fact that a player has had an injury interupted preseason? Well this guy is overweight and injured, and he's not even our player.

What risk?

At no money and for a PSD pick.

You can't find a less risky way of getting a former top 6 ND player onto a list.

In money terms it is not a big risk, it is the opportunity cost that we would be worried about. Do we take him and pass on a kid who could be a 10 year player for us. That is what they would be assessing, whether his value would be more than the kid we could take instead.

Exactly Redleg.

I trust them to make the right informed decision. This is not a "what the heck" punt on a player. If they dont think Sampi will make it then dont pick him.

People need to let go of this obsession of what number they went in the draft.

How many times did people post about delisted players and say he was picked at 6, 8, 12, 14 whatever in the draft, so he must have some talent.

Who cares. We are looking at the Player, not what number they went.

This is a sidescreen overweight player?

This is Phil Read/Aaron Davey all over again. I think in the 2003 PSD/Rookie draft Melbourne opted for Phil Read instead of Aaron Davey. Fortunately we were lucky enough to snare Davey with the 3rd pick in the rookie draft. perhaps CAC knew he'd slip. But how can you categorically know? Read is gone and Davey has become a household name.

Kangars and Davey are completely different players at the time of being drafted, but if we think Kangars is better, but hope that he slips to the rookie draft, thats too risky. Get him while you can.

As an aside, I'm sure the 39th player on our list was a decision between mcnamara and gaertner. CAC must have decided only one 17 year old, they then considered well perhaps we should get two at the last pick, but decided no lets stick to the original plan, the younger they are the riskier the pick i suppose.

I want Kangars.

I was all for giving Sampi a crack as soon as I heard he left the Eagles. I'm glad we gave him a crack, but unfortunately for him it looks like it's not meant to be.

We now have Maric as well.

I like what I hear about Kangars, could develop nicely or at least add to our lack of good depth.

Ideally I'd like both, but I doubt it can happen.

i like the sound of grimes...has anyone else been hearing that we would have taken grimes at pick 4 had morton not been available then

We would have taken who ever was available out of Kruezer, Cotchin or Masten.

So might Richmond and Carlton.

one of them hopefully take gourdis and one of them, a sampi or a somebody else like sampi

Not in bad shape for a side screen.

Clearly No turtles have gone down that throat for weeks.

There is no way we have put the past month into Sampi to not draft him.

The guy is doing plenty of hard yards out of sight & MFC is delibrately talking him up as Fat.

I'm tipping he will be a MFC crowd favourite by Round 4.

Bring on The Bails ERA

We would have taken who ever was not available out of Kruezer, Cotchin or Masten.

I'm not sure you typed what you meant. That said, I believe we rated Grimes ahead of Masten.

Do you mean Kreuzer, Cotchin, and Morton? If those three were taken with the first three, we would've taken Grimes...not Masten.

I agree, Kangars is a good prospect. Recruiters have said he would play a Darren Glass 'shutdown' type role in defence - exactly what we need. Not totally against Darren Pfeiffer either...he was a really straight ahead, breaking the lines midfielder as a junior and maybe a change of scenery would do him the world of good. Will be an interesting day...just happy with how we've come out of the national draft.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.
