    Q & A - with the club’s leaders Max Gawn and Jack Viney.

    Captain role - MG: you have to come and take it off me. I love it.

    JV: Achilles flared up after the break and unfortunately it didn’t calm down as hoped and surgery was the last resort. Looking forward to returning.

    MG: Liked Max H’s performances over the summer.

    Jack and Tom C expected in 6 - 7 weeks.

    Max says Kalani can kick (unlike certain ruckmen at the club).

    Feeling real now that the preseason matches have started and been played.

    Lucky that he has a good mix of mature players and talented young players.

    The big boys have settled in well. Interpretation of the ruck changes important. Don’t want to lose craft.

    I just chatted with Paddy Cross. What a lovely kid. I told him how genuinely happy folks on here are about him being on our list. He’s so humble, he said it hasn’t fully sunk in, today’s been hectic, but he’s gonna take a quiet moment to take it all in.

      One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
