would not be the slightest surprise if Riley gets the nod. he has impressed me with his attitude and the way he makes risks and trys new things.

I'd support Yze Magic as coach. Reckon he could get the boys pretty fired up. He wouldn't tolerate any crap from his namesake either. I could see the game plan as well, 'KICK IT TO COL!'

Jaded could be forward coach and Clint Bizkit the defence coach.

And of course RR, head of the football department!

After the game last Saturday Robbo said, when questioned about Riley somehting like "its pretty much the same, Riley comes from the same school as Danners..." He basically said that the two were very similar. I do wonder if Riley will be the change Melb seeks?

I posted this on Demonology:

Riley has shown that he obviously knows the technical aspects of the sport; he accepts no nonsense, knows what the players need to do, and pulls them up if they don't do it. He knows a bit about tactics too. In short, he's a good match day coach.

There's still an awful lot of unknowns about him though. How good is his communication with the players? With the other staff? How would he go being a list and player manager as well as a coach? How well does he delegate tasks to others? How good is his instincts regards to when to include young players? The latter is an area Neale was particularly good at.

So far he's proven to know his stuff with regards to on field matters but there's a hell of a lot of other skills he needs to demonstrate (more to the board than us) before he gets close to getting the top job.

What else would he say mate?

Having a coach for 10 years and a close mate in danners, he isnt going to say just after a win" oh bloody oath mate, huge difference, Rileys approach totally different than ND and its such a welcome change"

their approaches would be very similar the week after ND is sacked i would assume. riley didnt exactly have time to create and implement a whole new coaching method and team plan did he? and he didnt have many players to pick from so he wasnt exactly able to chop and change...

So who's going to apply from this board?

Jaded?

Yze_Magic?

Rhino Richards?

Clint Bizkit?

I'm very disappointed in you BBP...

What I want to know is, if Riley was such a clear candidate for a senior coaching job, why, in all the years he's been an assistant, hasn't he been mentioned when a coach has been sacked? Unlike Harvey, Sumich, Ratten...

Surely if he's going to be a coach one day, people would have looked at him before...

That said, if he wins games, shows what you want, I'm not going to get caught up in "reputation."

Possibly because he's not an ex-AFL player. Harvey, Ratten etc had distinguished playing records which had already placed them squarely in the public eye. Riley by comparison has long flown under the radar - low enough to get gravel rash.

Similarly, how many journo's were pumping up Neil Craig for the same jobs before he claimed the gig at the Crows ?

Before we get too excited about Riley (who I must admit has made a promising start) let's see how he goes against decent opposition. It was nice to win the Carlton game, but in all honesty the quality of what they put out on the park each week rivals that of Fitzroy in 1995/96. Let's sit back and judge him over the next 8 weeks. If his coaching can help this team win at least 3 more matches then I'd say he is a chance. Given the draw, it's possible, if unlikely.

He's taken over ND happy joyful role in the media.

He stated with a sly grin that he's the most successful coach in the AFL. 100% winning record if u don't mind.

I have not played AFL football so I think I am out. :o

If I did take the MFC job I would definitely want Y_M and CB in the coaches box. B) Fascinating experience that. :P

Jaded would be player management since she knows so much about what players do off the ground and does not mind a little brawling in the bar!

Really, I thought that was just me :P !!!

I say this at the start, I would have cleaned out all the coaching staff at the end of the year, but I heard Riley's interview on SEN today and I must say I was impressed with what he had to say, the main points,

Had Chook play HBF for 15 mins and might play their longer as a learning curve.

Had Frawley play 120 mins to fatstrack him and play on a guy that can play the game (not get 10min here and there and get his bum cold).

Pointed out that Davey was told to stay next to the point post as his opposing player (I forget who it was) killed us last time we played had heaps of inside 50's and kicked 1 or 2 goals where this time he only had 1 inside 50 so he did not mind because other avenues were open in the forward line, (even the boys at SEN liked that one)

He might not get the job but gee he was impressive.

I heard that too and also was impressed, also gave brock a massive backhander for letting carrazzo for getting a lot of cheap kicks in the 1st quarter.

You can be sure that if I was player manager, our boys would never get into trouble off the field, because I'd go out partying with them and keep an eye out... unless I drink, and then I am no longer responsible for anything that takes place ;)

I'm confident that the club has put the right processes in place, and the fact that they've been open and upfront about what has been happening at board level, is a welcomed change.

Riley should apply and if he doesn't get the job, he will certainly rate highly, for his knowledge of our players and list if nothing else. The only real question mark I would have is, how different is he to Neale? IMO we need a completely different approach if we're to move forward.

im not sure it needs to change completely. a little bit of tweaking should get him and the club a fair way.

im definetly warming to him.

loved his comment about carroll and concussion!

one thing we need to go as a club is become more accountable....and it seems as if he will make that happen.

its not as if we are sitting here going hes [censored] - only dont appoint him if we can find someone better.

i havent coached at senior or assitant or state level yet myself....and im no afl player.

pity, im not arf bad B) haha

Can you imagine the arguments about selection :P

Well, just the arguments period. :)

I'm getting sick of MFC players going public without engaging their brains first.

1. Robbo goes public and endorses neale after kicking 7 goals agaiinsta the Pies. Great , if he bothered to back it up the next week. remeber the tigers match. Danners goes the week after.

2. Neitz says they are playing for Riley's future. Wrong david, your'e all playing for your own, and Mark Riley undrestands this and doesn't need gratuitous support if its not backed up on the field. You know, the way the Bates , Sylvias, Frawleys and their mates did last week.

I'm expecting words of 'wisdom' from Brad Green any day now.

Can't wait

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
