AFL Draft 2025: Picks 7 & 8

There’s some people who understand recruiting and others who don’t. This thread has both

It’s not about the specific number, it’s about what you have to give.

Are they? Many of them are absolutely miles off.

This is also a draft where I think @ChaserJ said you can throw a blanket over them very early on.

It’s like im living in an alternative universe. Cal Twomey has had an almost 100% rate for years now. That’s even up to the top 20. Very rarely will a pick touted for 25 land in the top 10. Im starting to think dees supporters have had a lobotomy

One combo that doesn’t appeal to me massively is Nairn & Pickett/Dove. Would take 2 of them if we traded into the draft with gold coast’s future 1, but if we were just using 7 and 8 as early picks, I think we need to use 1 on a midfielder

Agree 100%

I know small forward is just about our most pressing positional need, but not if it means reaching for NQR prospects at 7 or 8

Take whoever the best mid/developing mid is with Nairn (who just seems like a lock at this point)

Could be worth taking a closer look at Cal's 2019 November rankings. Pickett ranked at 30 and taken at 12. No reason why there isn't a few surprises this time around again, especially in an draft where it's pretty even after the top 8.

He hasn’t done his phantom draft yet. That’s on Monday. Read what people are responding to you, or are you taking the [censored] ?

  1. Pick 14 - Jonty Faull. Twomey Nov Phantom 25.

  1. 12 - Gothard. Twomey Nov - 28.

    16 - Green. Twomey 25

    1. 16 - Rowston. Twomey 30

      17 - Michalanney. Twomey 25

      1. 18 Sheldrick. Twomey 35

        1. Brown. Twomey 23

Nairn from 25 drafted at 12 is entirely in line with results that happen all the time.

7: Nairn
8: Farrow
17: Pickett (received from Brisbane in exchange for pick 37 & a 2027 first round pick tied to GCS)

Call Twomey hasn't even put out a phantom draft yet.

These three picks are quickly becoming my preferred outcome assuming Robey and Taylor aren't available.

Why are people so convinced that we’ll trade a valuable future 1st round pick for a 3rd first round pick in a weak draft to select a mature age small forward with almost no exposure beyond SANFL reserves?

I’m not saying he’s not a good player but if he’s good enough to trade a F1 then he’s pricey valuable enough to take with pick 12 or so this year.

That F1 pick might end up being a earlier first round pick next year compaired to what we would get in a trade this year.

Gold coast will have a much harder draw next year, they only need to have bad luck with injuries, lose more close games than they win, have a bad pre season and that pick could end up P9 or 10 next year

What if Essendon go for Schubert? They don’t have a ruck at all. West Coast Duursma and Duff-Tyler, Richmond Robey and X.Taylor Essendon Sharp and Schubert so we get Cumming and the choice of Nairn, and Farrow

Do you actually understand the difference between Cal Twomeys power rankings and his phantom draft

He will release his phantom draft next week probably on the eve of the draft, when he has greater intel, which is why it’s accurate as it’s well known the clubs in the top dozen have worked out fairly close to who is going to select who

The fact Nairn has now been invited to attend night 1 I would suggest indicates something

I need to rewatch the Nairn highlights, for some reason think that struggled to kick any great distance.

Agree he doesn’t appear to be a long kick

In Gettable Twomey said Dees looking at Nairn at one of their picks. Taking into account FS/Academy/WC we have picks 11 and 12. Twomey seemed comfortable with Nairn.

If they finish 7th or 8th before finals then lose wildcard they will end up 9th or 10th

We aren’t picking nairn for picks 7 and 8. He isn’t in any phantom draft top 20 let alone top 10

Pay out Laurie and Sparrow to create the list spots and I'll get on the phone 📱

This is up there with one of the worst posts ive seen lately , joking or not, this is imo being disrespectful to both players

Sparrow is in our best 23 and about to hit his prime

Rookie me listed strengths and weaknesses for Nairn.

Kicking top of strengths.

" Nairn offers a unique makeup in the medium forward role, capable of playing above his height but also covering serious ground and possessing slick foot skills"

" Most importantly, he impacts the scoreboard"

" Nairn is a precise field kick and can hit targets heading inside 50 on his favoured left side."

Cameron Nairn Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central)

STRENGTHS:

+ Kicking
+ Leading patterns
+ Overhead marking
+ Running capacity
+ Scoreboard impact
+ Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Consistency
- Ground balls

I dont know if what you posted is deliberate and I normally like your input but you have said I wrote what you quoted. I did not write that and you should check your copy if this is a mistake. If it is not a mistake then it is just BS what you have done. It is easy to check my post.

Cal has NOT YET DONE HIS PHANTOM DRAFT. That happens early next week when he basically gets the best intel possible about what the Clubs are going to do. It matters not what Cal thought a week ago. The AFL don't want to be embarrassed on Draft night and so they also do their soundings - hence Nairn's invitation to Night 1 - the AFL know Nairn will go on Night 1. The list you are referring to is the form guide - Cal's Phantom Draft will be closer to the actual result. My understanding is that Mr King definitely wants someone who can "ïmpact forward". Nairn fits that bill, but can't see him going to WC, Rich or Ess, i.e. before our pick is up. So my bet is Nairn will be a Demon.

But he has put out his top 20 rankings which essentially mirrors the draft. I’ll be surprised if someone he rates as 25 two days ago gets picked ten 2 days later

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
