GWS will purchase $3.5m worth of cap space over 5 years in return for pick 13

We'll chuck in Clayton Oliver for free

I'd be more excited watching Jefferson become half the player you see him as tbh 😂

No, it wouldn’t have been better at all. Whatever was said was what the club felt needed to be communicated. My concern is the way it was done. I realise I view this situation at this point primarily via my feelings and as I say all the time in real life, feelings aren’t facts. The thing is with this, whilst I have concerns about Clarry personally, respecting his mental health includes accountability, taking on feedback, and growing from it—so he does have a part to play. This doesn’t appear to be how it’s gone for the past however many years. Sensitivity to mental health isn’t not being upfront, it’s about doing it in a way that is conducive to engaging the person and not having them walk away feeling devalued. I’m not talking flowers and candles, but in this case adequate notice for a meeting, considering what they know about Clarry, etc. This could have led to a productive discussion. Instead, we have a player feeling blindsided, the media in a frenzy, and the club potentially worse off because a player’s trade value could be further diminished. It’s not about not treating him as an adult, it’s about considering how a message is delivered to minimise fall out.

ETA: this is all based on assumptions from reporting. Happy if I am proven wrong.

Completely agree. That is what I meant about handling it sensitively.

Is this having a go at him because after a week or more of pure rain and cold in Melbourne, he is out on a beautiful sunny day on Sydney Harbour? And enjoying it? Shame on him!

Weird that premiership contenders are going out of their way to entice a player that doesn’t run both ways and can’t hit targets

Mate you have a history of criticising other posters who question the coach and the club's decisions and now you're already turning on someone who is still yet to coach a single game in his life.

Funny how quickly you've shifted the goalposts.

Goodwin had a proven track record and held a bunch of highly sought-after players together, and I was of the view that we were still only a touch away from being top-level again - as shown by us beating Brisbane in Brisbane, as well as in some other games. King comes in, and the players start marching out. I would love to see us return to the top, but we are off to a very bad start. And I will say it again: it will be awful to watch Clarrie tearing us apart for GWS or whoever. And I haven't shifted the goalposts, but if Clarrie does that, there will be many posters on here rewriting their history.

Pickett

We’ve been waiting over two seasons for them to get back to their 21-22 form

How long should we wait for Clarry to grow up? Or are you happy for him to carry on with a 1.5 million contract while performing like a player with a 350 thousand contract

Now he’s sooking it up like an 8 yo spoiled child after what the new coach expects from him & hanging out with his GWS mates

He was my favourite ever Demon & hope to God he sorts his life out, but I’m totally over his recent carry ons & the way the club has pampered to him & Petracca.

You DO know the players are on a break right?

Besides, he also doesn’t look like someone who suffered heartbreak and shock only 11 days ago in the form of the sudden and tragic loss of a family member, does he?

You got a couple of cheap laughs with your Id!ot!c post so it was probably worth it for you.

Edit: just realised I’m not done yet… you’ve wanted Clarrie gone for years. You’ve really got it in for him, disproportionately so. It’s borderline obsession. Others are down on him too, but you’re next level bitter. You’ve even PMd me in the past to try to explain why we should get rid of him, remember? Me, a poster you can’t stand, yet you took the time to do that.

A word of advice, take it or leave it… if you don’t know a person and what they’ve been through and/or are going through, maybe you should err on the side of sensitivity

I fully expect they will because they won’t be in the same midfield together and will probably be alongside mids that can kick. Getting their hands on the ball wasn’t the issue.

I thought we would let go of one of them, not both of them.

Two time winner of the Coaches Award. It's weird that a player with so many weaknesses was valued by so many coaches.

Goodwin's "chaos ball" has a lot to do with the ridiculous Demonland narrative that Petracca and Oliver can't hit targets.

I’m sure he looked just as happy at the Geelong farm last year Daz. He probably just enjoys the company and the break from football.

I think you maybe reading too much into this.

No, its to confirm that he's clearly not willing to change up his role or spend time at Casey.

Very simple to work out.

Dontchya know, NC… because Clarrie’s not already kitted up running around in the backline at Casey Fields, it’s patently obvious he won’t accept a role change/Casey gig. Never mind that he’d be alone out there since everyone else is on a break, the point is, how DARE he smile and laugh and enjoy fleeting respite from the horror fortnight he’s experiencing right now

I know exactly what he's been through right on a personal level i know his family and his knockabout mates he hangs out with up here. Worked with him when he was at the Murray Bushrangers and even then he obviously needed a lot of growing up to do. Not much has since change.

You on the other hand dont exact know what he's been through and the [censored] he put the club through because you're so incredibly blinded by your rosy red and blue glasses.. I mean look how thats worked out with McVee lol

Its about time we get a coach that actually wants to change this culture and set incredibly high standards instead of babysitting someone that cant take the most simple of constructive feedback provided to them.

He's been taking the [censored] for years/taking the club for a ride on a huge contract. As soon as he's confronted with an honest conversation from his new coach he has a sook about it.

Would it have been better if King wasn't honest with him about his role in the team going forward and then waited until next season/preseason to bring it up and hold him accountable to something that hadn't been discussed previously? The babying of guys in their late 20s is crazy. Yes there has to be an element of respecting someones mental health, I'm not de ying that - but it is a two way street, you can't just continue enabling someone's bad behaviour it doesn't serve either party well.

Taking the club for a ride eh? 4 Blueys, 2 coaches awards, All Australian teams, tries so hard every game he plays. And wants to remain a Demon. I wonder if you cheered when he kicked the third of the 'bang bangs' Or did you just think he is taking the club for a ride. Please show some respect for an absolute champion of our club.

My view is we need to keep one of trac or clarry. Moving both on seems too extreme.

I think we can get a better deal for trac so my preference is to keep Claz.

Without them both our midfield depth would be terrible. They must think Tommy Sparrow and others can have similar output

Exactly, we must retain one of the two preferably Clarry as he wants to be with us still. Those who are excited about a RESET, please tell me who will be our onballers apart from Max?

Which end of the ostrich am I Daz?

Look I’ve been, openly on DL, more critical of Oliver over the past two years than most. I think we have been too easy on him. I believe Goody should have given him a measure of tough love - and given his past MH issues and his relationship with Goody this could only have come from Goody. Instead it appears from the outside that Goody didn’t do that, he mothered him instead. So I’m agreeing with your thoughts.

So new coach, new approach. And I’d be 100% certain that whatever message was delivered to Clarry was totally respectful of his MH issues.

What I said in my previous post was last year, at the hint he was being traded, he set up a meeting with the cats. But he ended up coming home. Kind of similar situation this year, where he may end up coming home again. Who knows? That’s why I suggested we shouldn’t read too much into one picture. Ive had people try and entice we away from my then employer - and it’s fun to hear what they had to say and offer. Doesn’t mean I was going to leave - and I didn’t. He may well leave Daz, and best wishes if he does, but that photo isn’t enough for me to say - as you did - he won’t accept what King was suggesting and will leave.

Hey, OF :) I had to laugh at this asinine response to your question…

“No, its to confirm that he's clearly not willing tochange up his role or spend time at Casey.”

But it’s not the response per se, it’s the fact that he’s openly saying this, and is actually serious! 😂

So, Clarrie being on his break, on a boat in Sydney, means he’s not accepting a role change or a Casey gig.

I feel like I’m in a Kafka novel

The mind boggles

Since mid-2023. Since signing the huge contract. Not looking after his body as a professional athlete. Getting into verbal spats with fitness staff. Taken to court. Destroying property. Enjoying a recreational lifestyle. Taken to hospital for dumb behaviour. Turning up to preseason camp in an unfit and inebriated state.

Yep, taking the club and it's supporters for a ride.

I'll preface this with the notion I've always enjoyed seeing Clarry play. He's exciting, inventive, a bit of a larrikin and I think has loved his time in the Red and Blue. Bit of a ratbag but a genuine champion of the game and our club.

But....

Actions often speak loudest and I am bitterly disappointed that when presented with a new vision, a new challenge, one that doesn't appear to have aligned with his view he spits his chips ???

I have no real idea of what went on or was said in that meeting with King but it strikes me as very odd that he can find himself quite happily taking a 3 hour crew with Giants Skipper , Gilligan et al at all but 5 mins notice.

The lad is entitled to his life as are any but I truly find this reaction , well, curious.

Im inclined to two takeaways. It is clearly evident Goodwin mollycoddled his list. That worked for a while and then magnificently didn't. King has NO intention of going down this path. Thank God for that.

Conversely a lot of our list were used to inordinate amount of hand holding and pandering to 'their wants' .. Even Max is not exempt as Brodie says hi .

This it seems is not how things are to go going forward and this has not apparently sat well with some of the 'precious' ones.

I'll be disappointed not to see that ginger mop wearing 13 carving up the game ( for is ) but I'm far more disappointed he cracked the sads .

Tbh that leaves a sour taste...

Good points BB, but to tell a champion mid fielder he will not be playing in that role where he has proved himself time after time , would be a bit hard to stomach. You can't really blame him for his reaction and he does have GINGER hair! Hopefully, he will think a bit more about it. I am a bit worried that King's 'new broom' approach will work. Quite often doesn't.

This year is completely different to last year at Geelong.

It wasn'tthe coach that forced him to go speak to Geelong it was a board member instead.

This time around its the coach that has pretty told him to look at other options because he's not guaranteed a game next year.

Two completely different scenarios.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection.
