State of Origin is Back

Featured Replies

Great idea 🙄.

Let’s bring back a game that has had no fan intrigue for nearly 30 years.

The AFL already has the premier football competition in Australia and now wants its cake and eat it too.

The NRL product is fast closing in especially as a television event.

AFL can only dream of the success NRL has with State of Origin and even the Vegas games. Their Women's comp is also lightyears ahead.

Attendance figures are no longer the measure for success

The players say they want it, but let's see how many of the big names are still on board by the time 14 February comes around.

I'm guessing the clubs will have the final say on whether star players are available or not.

I'm naming the side now.

If it was a fair dinkum game I’d actually be interested. Won’t be anything more than an exhibition game so meh

I’d like to see the All-Australian team play the 2nd AA team as that would be fun. Again though, wouldn’t be fair dinkum.

loved you picked peddo in there ,not sure about neeld

use to love the interstate games the best against the best

14 Feb in Perth

3 hours time difference to East Coast so game time 4:30pm Perth time

Likely temp... High 30's

The Round Zero teams will especially love it

I like the idea of the one game yearly rotation they appear to be setting up.

Reckon the players might also appreciate playing a top-level game with some of their pre-AFL peers.

Welcome back.

Victoria State of Origin team: Big V player list, match results 1977-99 ...

As excited about this as I am about the next 2 weeks games

I'm all for State of Origin in pre season gives me something to watch but it should be the best Vs the best. The Big V V either the All Stars or SA not WA they are minows not worth seeing IMO.

All true DJ, However the only interest I have is praying we don't get any injuries to our players. 14th February in Perth it is liable to be 43deg. I hope it is a night game.

Agree OD

AFL need to be a little smarter as they build up these wannabe games.

It can't be a night game as Perth is 3 hours behind in summer. 5pm start at best

Looks like a disaster in the making DJ.

  • 1 month later...

scott of the whinging, whining cat variety doesn't rate ruckmen, so gawn hopefully gets to sit this one out... as much as i have little doubt that he would LOVE to play in the game

I know we're worried about injuries but as someone who loves football and Victoria, I'm delighted that state of origin is back.

I loved watching the international rules growing up in Dublin. The Aussies looked like gods and the punch ups were mighty. However, for all the Aussie strength, fitness and professionalism, often they just couldn't kick straight!

It was great to see a version of the wonderful AMATEUR sport of Gaelic Football played internationally and celebrate the links between the countries.

I admit it was a bit harsh seeing our best players getting poached out here but a good opportunity for them and to be fair it's definitely one of the greatest possible places to make your new home.

So as a new proud Victorian I'll be watching these games with my family.

I'll be teaching my children that when it comes to the other states there's nothing more satisfying than squashing cockroaches!

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
