Enemy territory! But it's not like the old days. Which, to be fair, I never experienced. Even still, which end will the cheersquad be? Safety in numbers haha.

With injuries to Lampard, Mackin and Purcell (are we doing alphabetical order injuries now, or what?), we're now back into top-up territory, with 7/30 unavailable.

Barring anything else that crops up - Chaplin looked sore as well, though hopefully just a bad corky - here's those left standing:

B: Ebert, Taylor

HB: Chaplin, O'Hehir, Goldrick

C: McNamara, Hore, Paxman

HF: Fitzsimon, Harris, Bannan

F: Gall, Zanker

FOLL: Pearce, Hanks, Heath

IC: Campbell, Johnson, Mahony, Wotherspoon, Pisano

EMG: Rigoni, Dethridge, ????

Plenty still to like in that team. Maybe we'll uncover a jet as a top-up. How's that for positivity?

How is Rigoni tracking?

She looked a good prospect but has been derailed by injury to date.

We believe we’ll be at the opposite end to the grandstand/station. I’ll post here when it’s 100% confirmed. We’re also currently finding out about the chair situation. Some grounds don’t allow people to bring camp chairs.

I did experience the horror of Vic Park back in the day but I managed to be at our game at Windy Hill (arguably worse than Vic Park) last year without ‘nam flashbacks so I think it should be ok 😅

There’ll be more of us this week. Round one clashed with the men’s Hawks game which only some of us left early in order to get to Whitten Oval on time. Round two being at Casey meant some couldn’t get there because of the travel time. This week will see a great representation ❤️💙

Rigoni trained fully, early in preseason, then injury, recovered, had a run in full training, then injured again. Now, ready to go. She is athletic, strong and reasonably tall, and reminds me of a younger Goldy with her attitude. Hoping her skills are developing well.

Wotherspoon, who was always in the rehab group during preseason, though was running and working hard, is the one to watch. I reckon a reasonable replacement for Purcell (though a different skill base).

Make sure you’ve had your tetanus shot

I thought the girls played without wings???

But maybe I'm on the wrong forum. Rather than Demonland maybe I should be on La La Land

Victoria Park is generally open to public access. Is AFLW entry free like Windy Hill?

Sunday weather looking pleasant

AFLW has wings, but only five forwards and defenders.

Yep. And I’m picking up my hazmat suit from the dry cleaners tomorrow

Free entry for AFLW members, otherwise it’s $15 for adults. Under 18yo: free.

They fence it off for AFLW. Free for MFC W members though, as are games at Ikon Park, Moorabbin, Windy Hill, etc.

And adding to Craig's point, wingers are arguably more impactful in AFLW. Because of that 5-6-5 structure imbalance, they play really varied roles to fill gaps/bolster either end, probably beyond the way wingers drop forward or back in men's. McNamara, Mackin and Paxy are our main ones in this role at the moment.

Well said. Lots of opportunity, exciting for these players. Wotherspoon showed plenty last year and Rigoni's debut would be the kind of positive story we need.

At a quick glance, we could have over half the team aged 23 and under this week. Let's back them in!

😆

On the other hand, on the off chance yours was a serious thought, they position 2 instead of 3 on the half-forward and half-back lines.

I posted elsewhere that Paxy and Lize rock-paper-scissored coming out of the pre-start huddle, surmising this was to choose wings?

Updates on the weekend's injuries:

Liv Purcell - ACL as we knew.

Blaithin Mackin - grade 3 MCL, so I'm guessing 6-8 weeks.

Sarah Lampard - calf strain 4-8 weeks.

We just can't take a trick. 😥

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/1876095/injury-update-purcell

The Kropinyeri IR guernsey promo must have been done before Saturday...🥺

ACL no.2. I'm channelling Max-ness for her.

Also, a coaching role, bringing the surviving budding mids up to her standards and impact (they're not far behind, mind, if Saturday's an indication!)

Looking past Collingwood, no North in the H&A (or whatever an 18-team, 12-round comp should be called: H&Abit - Half and Abit?)

Going early, but shaping up that we meet on that Last Saturday In November.

I'd thoroughly recommend watching the series Chernobyl to get you in the right frame of mind before attending.

It is an awesome miniseries

As is the demons AFLW series!

Three huge milestones this week…

Edo, Loz and Hanksy all playing their 75th game.

🥳👏👏👏🥳

These are the stats that matter. I expect you to keep track of this and report the season totals 😉

Confident, I like it. I'm just hoping we can field a team in a few weeks haha.

And I think Paxy becomes the first Demon to crack 80? [edit: nope that would be Kate, last week, oops!]

Wild to think that Daisy finished up on 55 AFLW games, meanwhile someone like Fitzsimon, at 22 years, is on 47 now so will surpass that shortly. Puts things into perspective!

This is a handy reference. Lily Mithen has still played the most Melbourne games on 82. Banno is probably the youngest player (23.4 years) with the most games with 61

Change of where we’ll be located at Vic. Park

Some of our members have mobility issues and because no portable/camp chairs are allowed we’ll be in the grandstand.

Fun fact: an AFL rule is minimum two bays between opposing cheer squads. There goes any ideas of an all-in brawl 😅

wont make it out to vic park this sunday but this venue brings back memories of jako kicking 8 while i stood on a milk crate, us winning, me going off and dad grabbing me by the scruff of the neck and telling me to shut up s o we didnt get beaten up. i was 9 😂

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?
