article says he was a high school teacher. Lots of successful coaches have come from a teaching background. David parkin, Clarkson, fagan, and thats just off the top of my head.

It might have been Clarkson that has refered to the skills from teaching transfering very well into footy. Instructing and leading young men, making relationships and delivering clear messages. Sounds like a good skillset for a developement coach 👍

Has there been any credible recent intel about who we might pick up as assistant coaches?

Mark Neeld a stand out obviously.

Was there not rumour of a new role, such as the one that would replace Alan Richardson, additionally that it might be Jimmy Bartel as the front runner?

Is that still a thing or thrown out?

The players are really pleased Whitford’s been appointed to the head of development role.

I won’t denigrate Choco, he’s been great, but he’s reached his use by date.

Whitford’s a terrific relationship builder (which is probably half the role) and an excellent communicator. He’s earnt his chance.

And by saving a bit of money on this role, it’ll hopefully allow a couple of bigger name appointments around King.

As it stands how many vacancies do we have for Senior Assistants?

With the departures of Radford (Strategy & Midfield) and Bassett (Backline) that frees up two vacancies but it looks like Jones (previously Stoppage Coach) might have been promoted as the Senior Assistant for midfield.

Logically it looks like we will bring in one Senior Assistant for either the backline or forwards with Chaplin shifting back/forward accordingly. I think it is good that we have retained Jones and Chaplin as the coaching structure has significantly changed with a new Head Coach, 1 x new Senior Assistant (to be appointed), 1 x Head of Development. We also have the Footy Strategy boss role that sits between Richo (Footy GM) and Guerra (CEO).

My guess would be the vacancy would be someone who has successfully worked in similar systems to what King is looking to implement and possibly someone who King has previously worked with. I also wonder whether the appointment has already been made but not announced yet due to the said person being involved in today's Grand Final.

No it doesn't. I expect Jones will be retained (under contract) with two new assistants coming in.

Any updates on who’s going to be coaching for us (assistant wise) or any other roles we have vacant, and if not; timeline of when usually they’d appoint these?

We would need to settle on a playing list first.

Listening to the King interview it seems Chaplin, Jones and Whitford (not Whitfield Steven) are staying and King needs to employ a couple more pretty quickly - Scarlett only a part-time possibility, but he intends to speak to him.

TM on nine news live from Pies B&F said looks like Troy Chaplin off to the Pies as an Assistant Coach

Don't think we can afford to lose Chaplin right now tbh, if that's true.

Hes contracted for next season with us so I’d say we would only let him go if we had a replacement

Does Mick Stinear have a role in the men’s program?

It's looking like a contract is not meaning to much at our club these days .

Not just our club all clubs it seems. It seems to be a new trend.

Hope we get couple draft picks for him. 😂

Didn’t we reject Chappy going to Richmond? Why would we suddenly allow him to go to the Pies?

Is he the leaker?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
