In my wildest dreams I couldn't have predicted Sunday's debacle.

Small consolation was that I had put money on the Saints.

Judging by the unlikely outcome it looks like some Demons players had secured big odds on the Saints too during three quarter time!

Am I joking!?

3 days later and St Kilda fans still celebrating like they won the flag. 🤣😂

I had to delete WhatsApp and probably will have it deleted until the end of the year.

Fair play to them, but they didn’t beat much. Signs of a [censored] and desperate club is when you celebrate beating a fellow bottom 6. How about NWM dancing with Ross Lyon… 🤡

60+ years…

And counting…

A couple of little ones.

1) a lot of Dees supporters are having a crack at St Kilda supporters for celebrating like they'd won the flag. I guarantee you we would have been carrying like pork chops if we mowed down a 46 point lead. I guarantee you Collingwood supporters would've celebrated just as hard even if they came from 46 against North or West Coast. It was just an incredible achievement to win from so far back and it's only natural for a fan of any team to go off their head after a win like that.

2) Melksham giving it to the St Kilda crowd when he put us 43 points up half way through the third should've aged well but didn't.

3) Windsor giving NWM a round of applause after he produced a rare stuff up most certainly didn't age well.

I can't stand Ross Lyon and I don't rate the St Kilda list at all, but it was an absolute all-timer. Monumental win.

When you put aside the bitterness and shame of the loss (which I understand many are not ready to do), it's hard not to admit Wanganeen-Milera is an absolute joy to watch.

Agree with all of that.

St Kilda will end the season winning 4 of their last 5 games (they now play 3 bottom 4 sides in a row) and head into 2026 sky high with confidence, and they'll trace it back to the win over us. However in reality they had lost their prior 6 games, they were worse than putrid for 3 quarters on Sunday, and I could not believe how easy they were to play against through to 3 quarter time.

Not sure if it has been posted (I saw it on Instagram) but Gawn’s interview on Triple M was quite revealing.

  • He confirmed he was personally made aware of our first 6-6-6 warning in the 2nd Quarter

  • Claimed responsibility for the 2nd violation, but said he had only a few seconds to determine where the players were and wasn’t able to

  • Said the Club has “forgotten how to win”and cited his own kick across goal, which led to the spat with May, as an example

The last point is something we have probably suspected but interesting it was admitted publicly. The issue of course is, if the captain isn’t able to show the team how to win, I’m not sure who is?

Most of our senior players have failed in similar moments over the years: I recall Lever giving away free kicks in the finals, May dropping chest marks and getting stuck into teammates, Viney and Oliver blazing away, and of course most of our forwards missing important goals. I think one of the only cool heads on the list is Melksham. It’s a shame he’s not a few years younger, and very unfortunate he was missing in the final minutes.

Winning 4 of their last 5 games is the worst thing that could happen to St Kilda IMO. They are going nowhere, having beaten just us (twice) over the last 12 weeks, and in one of those games finding themselves 46 points down to us. They were, as you say, rubbish for 75% of the game.

Late season wins against bottom 4 sides might feel nice but will paper over the cracks, and Ross Lyon will yet again escape scrutiny for another failed year.

At the very least, our collapse is forcing the blowtorch onto us.

I said just that to my dad during the game: "We're playing OK here, but they're letting us do exactly what we want to do."

WTF are you doing bringing this thread back from where it belongs

An absolutely disgraceful performance.

However, hopefully it was a turning point on a journey that was heading absolutely nowhere.

Meh.

We win this game and it's basically a non story. I still would have been [censored] as a supporter. Giving up a 40 odd point lead felt to win by a goal or so would have felt like a loss anyway.

Still think we are closer to a flag than St Kilda. Last time I stated that was at the end of the 2020 season.

As a side note, I still can't understand the hype around Ross Lyon. For a master coach, he's never actually won a flag.

St Kilda's gone nowhere in the last two years. In that time Lyon's aura has completely fallen away. The brownie points for a few close grand finals dont last forever.

Like Goodwin his Pythonesque constricting game plan was good for a few years and he was very unlucky to not win at least one of his first 2 GF’s with the Saints. But in his 3rd try, the passé defensive mindset and inability to score freely throughout the season much like Goodwin’s after 2021 left Freo firing blanks when the flag was there to be won in the 2013 GF against the Hawks. An inability for his teams to find clutch goals cost him premiership glory

Can someone get arrested so we can shut this thread down please

The only positive out of this game is that it forced the club to take action on Goodwin.

Made it blatantly clear that we were not, as Goodwin said, "so close".

Its not so cut and dry. In the previous month Geelong had beaten the Saints by 5 goals and Freo , Hawks and Sydney had won by smaller margins (and GWS beat them by 2 goals a month later.) If Melbourne could just stop the momentum, say, with 5 mins of nothing followed by a goal re-establishing a four-goal margin we realistically win that game by five goals and do as well or better than many good sides did in the same stretch of the year. I guess we'll never really know but if this season's biggest problem was psychological stuff then maybe without that we win lots of the close games, built up confidence, make the finals and go on next year to be a team that occasionally jump from bottom of the eight to next year's premier.

But we couldn't and we didn't. More than the actual result, it was how completely clueless the players and coaches were throughout that final quarter that showed how far away we are from genuinely competing again.

Sure, you have days when things go your way and you look like world beaters. It is how you respond when things don't go your way that really matters.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
