Umpires, like players, make mistakes.

Fans always remember with anger the decisions that go against their team and conveniently forget those that favour their side.

It's called human nature.

I tend to think my memory is well able to remember the ones that went in our favour.

Others on this forum have often commented on what we Melbourne supporters certainly perceive as media bias-and I would suggest it’s more than a perception. It frequently seems like certain commentators are actively“barracking” for our opponents. This takes the form of validating highly dubious free kicks against Melbourne and being conspicuously silent when obvious kicks to Melbourne are not paid. Anything vaguely reportable by Melbourne player is often amplified in commentary. Can I point to a particular example of this? On the current AFL website there is some footage of the Stephen May incident with the caption “Reckless May hit sparks massive all-out brawl”. Of course, whether or not an action is “reckless” forms an element of whether the action is reportable and the penalty. Captioning the incident this way is clearly prejudicial. I wonder whether our club takes issue with this, especially as it seems we lower profile clubs are often seen as expendable by the MRO.

Reckon you could find supporters of every single club who thinks the media are biased against them.

So we are not objective observers....we are wingers. That my friend is an insult to my intelligence. PILSNERS AT NOON.

Personally I think that particular headline is a reflection of the frenetic clickbait nature of all AFL journalism. Every discussion is turned up to 11, every tiny incident is scrutinised & magnified. They all trade in hyperbole and drama. I don’t think they target MFC specifically but as we’re going badly we’re giving them plenty of cheap touches

regarding any MRO type incidents the media, in particular the commentators, seem to want to be judge and jury. Today [censored] Dwayne had Viney cited and suspended despite the umpire calling play on (though in this case Jackie might be in trouble😂). Same applies to the McVee bump against Port, they were talking like he was suspended before the game had even finished

Spot on Deegirl. And just when you think you could get away from clickbait journalism and find refuge in just supporting your team, it's in your face on steroids.

All clubs have one-eyed supporters who believe this to be true against 'their' club. They can't all be right can they?

It's the biggest load of tosh going on.

What's that saying HG, 'just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean it isn't true'.

I feel like on the Kayo broadcast Gerard Healy goes into bat for us and has a bit of love for (one of) his ex-teams but just about everyone else d-rides the opposition.

Huh???

Gerard Healy has a particular dislike for Melb, has for years. Supposedly stems back to how he perceives he was treated by the club when he left, but I'm not sure about that.

Even when we win he finds ways to make snide remarks, subtle backhanders that are wrapped up in an attempt at compliments.

I like him when it's not us playing, he's a good commentator with excellent insight.

Having said that, would rather him work a Melb game than Dermie, BT or screaming Brayshaw any day of the week

He definitely will be, slung Rowell whose head slammed the ground.

Said with such authority too.

I still think that "Viney already being in MRO trouble" was more than uncalled for by Dwayne Moron.

You wont get any argument from me.

The confusion caused by the inconsistent application of the rules leads to frustration of players who create incidents.

Kozzie was never tripped when he dropped the ball despite our plyers being penalised for a trip when a tackle slipped down to a trip. Different match and different interpretation.

Our players are constantly called to play on and then deliver off balance or to poor set up, our opponents are given time to set up downfield. and a demon player better not move off the mark or a fifty metre penalty is paid.

WE just cant seem to get it right

We should get the umpires down to our training to assist us in what we are doing wrong.

Invite them all down and put them in the cooler..

You always see these threads when we are [censored]. Get over it. Half the [censored] you talk about doesn't even happen or it just happens for everyone.

Sore losers blame media, umpires, anyone else except their own club for its incompetent performances.

The point of my topic was really to ask whether our club goes into bat for its players when there’s a justifiable basis for doing so. When the AFL media website puts up vision of the May incident using the word “reckless“ in a caption I would generally describe as inflammatory, prior to any review by the MRO, I’m suggesting it’s obviously prejudicial. And this would be true of any club not just Melbourne. So it’s not really a question of whether Melbourne supporters are lacking objectivity. Any club should push back against this form of prejudicial publicity and I hope ours does and publicise the fact that he has done so.

'Pushing back against this form of prejudicial publicity' would be giving the media exactly what they'd relish - a reactionary club that 'can't take scrutiny'. It's just noise. Ignore it.

Listening Watching the game on Sat I, according to them all, apparently could have been excused for thinking why would such a Team like mine receive my time wasting support. I didn't feel like that though. I wanted to go back to the mob/pub I used to drink at and state my case. The reason I reasoned was that the pub folk were far better than this bunch of old crones that had established themselves as the Football Almaniacs. By God they were so breathtakingly dumb and rude and self opionated. At one point they just decided to talk amongst themselves about some non football issue.

We've come a long way when a dedicated football set of clowns forget they have an audience .

I'm stunned that Viney wasn't cited to be honest, just shows again the inconsistency/ineptitude of the MRO.

Arm free, head barely touched, possibly could have avoided the ground

Are we talking about two separate incidents? In talking about the one where Viney got a free kick for holding the ball, his head absolutely slammed the ground.

Perhaps, I was talking about where Viney was holding his opponent by the arm.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
