Should have been jailed for what he did to Nev Bruns.Was charged for it but footballers in that era were teflon coated

    Matthews was seriously messed in the head.

    I was at the Whitten Oval the day he broke Terry Wallace's jaw. You heard the smack, the ball did just leave the area but it was poor judgement on Grinter's behalf and something I reckon he's no proud of. As for Brereton he was of an incredibly talented player who loved getting in the face of the opposition. I liked him and wished he played for us.

    Agree, Brereton could have been an all time great had it not been for injuries.

    Randomly watched his open Mike interview with Mike Sheahan on YouTube few months back.. actually a really good watch if anyone has seen it.

    It beats me to this day how a thug and coward like Matthews, who was de-registered as a player, can be regarded by many as an icon of out game.

    Back then you'd have to fight fire with fire and Grinter was our fire during that era and we loved him for it.
    I remember one day out at Waverly and Brereton cleaned up Dean Chiron at the opening bounce.
    It was Grinter who had him looking over his shoulder as he was the only player we had that Brereton was intimidated by.

    I really believe the team will rally on Monday and win this.

    Its obviously a last ditch chance for finals.

    Goodys back is against the w

    All we need do is just bring our best , it will do.

    I'd like to some decent physicality against this mob that bullies us and gets away with it all top often.

    Both Jake and Kozzie to have a big day out.

    I watched the Pies dismantle the Dawks last week.
    They were impressive.
    Real impressive.

    Yeah we can win it no doubt.
    But everything has to go right.
    Need to play 4qtrs, our guns need to fire and take our opportunities.
    Choke in front of goal like usual and we're doomed ..... DOOMED I tell ya.

    Watch the number of times Howe pushes his opponent in the back once beaten in a marking contest but don’t count on a 50 metre penalty. He got away with it multiple times against Hawthorn last week.

    Laurie was dropped as shown via the Casey team changes. Laurie's best position is as an inside mid, not HF. Anyway, Kolt got a great write up by the VFL coach, your take is baseless

His ability to be really calm and decisive with the ball impacted the scoreboard again which he's been able to do this consistently now which is great to see."

    Interesting. Could it be a deliberate tactic rather than plain old nastiness? Perhaps a forced delay to stop the oppo playing quickly is of more use these days than a 50m penalty deep in defence which give time for opponents to organise, so it's worth the risk of a 50m.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
