And the coaches.

We’re very close to being great again. Hawthorn, however will be nowhere near it when it matters. Langford to be next captain when max retires in nine years.

Can we please employ some decent Forward line Coaches so we can at least try to kick a winning score

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE FORWARD LINE GOODWIN???

Don’t play Oliver again until he is FIT

Sad but predictable. When we kept missing those goals in the second quarter I could have told you almost exactly how the game would pan out from there.

Fact is, we’re not going to win many games this year if we only show up for three quarters. Gawn missed a gettable one then we didn’t even look like scoring outside of a Kosi masterclass. Huge concern, especially as it was our strength up until recently.

Individuals? JVR continues to go backwards. Fritsch is useless if he can’t take his chances (that was his one wood), I’ll go easy on Clarry but that wasn’t his best. Sharp I like but not sure he’d AFL standard. Jeffo is most likely a bust. That’s a lot of passengers.

Maybe it’s my Melbourne goggles but Langford screams “best player in the league” one day potential. Anyone his size that is good overhead, uses it well and hits the scoreboard is an A grader. Lindsay looks really good too.

We will be 3-7 next week and probably headed for mid table this year. It sucks, but there’s plenty to work with.

In my distant youth an accidental trip was a free and a deliberate trip is a suspension. What is it now?

Play on

Bailey Fritsch. Congrats on your 4 disposal game

Shanked 2 sitters for goal 1 kick in each half. Stat less in the last

Baby keeping you up at night?

Just go now. Your intensity is pathetic

Cracking game for 3 and a half quarters. Apart from the goal kicking I’m proud of that effort… It’s coming together… Never expected to beat the hawks… We are warming in to the new gameplay nicely.

Langford is an absolute gun.

I know we weren’t accurate but I genuinely think if you pull together all the outcomes that were changed by absolutely shocking umpiring, we win that game. Or at the very most we lose by a goal.

We were the better team today. They’ll finish 6th and go out in the first round of finals.

I don’t hate Weddle or anything but he should have been cleaned up by Rivers in the last quarter

he had every right to go for that ball, and didn’t need to stop and do the nice thing.

Simon is not smart enough at selection.

JVR, Jeffo and Fritta all horribly out of form yet plays all three.

The one dangerous tall that performed last week he moves down back for Petty.

Another zero goal game from Spargo and pretty sure same for Chandler. When the heat comes on and we're struggling the only small forward that stands up (when he's playing as a small forward) is Koz and he's probably gone at years end.

Kolt & Jeffo aren't ready for AFL and Jeffo is barely VFL level at this point.

Came to play, executed the plan quite well I thought. Matched them in most areas.

But 7.14 doesn't win you games

No we weren’t. Get real

Our offense was amateur hour and it’s been in that category for 2-3 years

Where is the Development of any key Forwards???

Did a lot right for 3 quarters. Pressure was good,

But you can’t win if you don’t kick straight

Youngsters are doing well. If only the rest of the team had the composure of Langford in front of the sticks

P.s. Dork fans are annoying

JVR should never be selected again and delisted/traded although I doubt we would get much from the trade. Some have said that he should be tried as a defender. The problem is that he is too lumbering and cannot change direction at the pace required.

And as I have indicated before, the narrative that he is just 'out of form' or 'lacking confidence' is avoiding the issue. His running patterns are terrible, he cannot take marks and often is jogging on his own with back to play and trying to work out what is what. That is more than 'out of form'.

Fritsch was again lazy and when he did actually have a chance did nothing constructive.

Langford was exceptional.

Could any AFL team win a game with a lineup that included Fritsch, Jefferson and Van Rooyen up front?

With even a half-decent forward line we could have put the result to bed by three-quarter time.

Meanwhile Turner was wasted in the backline. Baffling.

Time to turn JVR into the greatest backman of the modern era

He’s consistently accurate when kicking for goal. But seriously needs to improve his leading and marking skills. He’s only 22 (I think). Was very disappointing today. I thought coming back after being dropped would inspire him today. It wasn’t to be. Back to the reserves and learn how to lead and mark please!

JVR has to be tried as a defender or traded. It's the only way we'll get something out of him.

Relax champ, he is 22yo. Give him time.

Horrific umpiring aside, when senior players miss goals from 30m directly in front, and then you come out in the last quarter and yet again give a limp performance, the outcome is as expected.

Game was there to be won and again, we get absolutely pantsed in the last quarter. Simply not good enough coming off a good break.

We absolutely were the better team.

But you are right that the key forwards are a problem. We dominated for 3 quarters in nearly every aspect of the game except once we had to do something with it inside 50.

We were better for 3 quarters, but unfortunately this has always been a 4 quarter game. That will never change.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
