I wasn’t going to read through this topic to see if it’s been asked already, but what is the “shadow puppet duck) hand signal that Petty gave after each of his goals, and as the players got around him to celebrate, what did the two handed shove in the chest signify?

Yes, but what does it mean?

Re: the conversation about what changed this week—I feel like it wasn’t so much that our players intentionally weren’t putting in the effort or weren’t buying in to Goody’s plan in the previous games, it’s that they were confused by the gameplan and became more and more demoralised as it continued to not work.

5 weeks of reviewing their failures and mistakes is what has led to so many finally getting it.

In other words, they had the same growing pains other clubs do when they implement something new—as others here had predicted using the Hawthorn and Brisbane examples.

The talk of Goody “losing” the players was rubbish.

What changed imo was the players were playing to their strengths not the desires of the FD. They look like they knew what the had to do. Previous weeks they looked like they were uncertain and hesitent.

You need an enforcer or two.

We've had the old stager in Vines for so long. Now he's joined by the young Kolt.

Fighting for every scrap, jostling and flying the flag are just as important as anything else in the game.

Add to that the fierce attack on the ball and ball carrier.

Pressure pressure pressure. Something that's been missing for far too long.

The sharing of ball and more HBs forward, finally paid dividends today.

Have to back it up though. No flukes pls.

Max kicked a behind but that’s not the point. The point is, it felt as though Kolt wanted Max to hear and see the support, which for mine is a great sign, to see a young player care about his captain like that.

It also confirmed what a cheeky bugger Kolt is. I haven’t been in the cheer squad for as long as others but I’m sure this is something a seasoned player might do, not so much a colt, if you will 😁

Not wanting to be pedantic GW but aren't a point and behind the same thing?

Also whenever Max is lining up a goal could you have the Bullseye handler move it across about 12 - 15 feet left of centre.

Thanks in advance

PS. They all contributed unlike previous games were there were passengers.

I think they were told to hunt Freo and let the game begin at contest, that’s our strength and it brings confidence.

Exactly my point Kent. Yesterday my impression was the players played to their strengths not being told how to play. They were off the lease compared to the first 4 games. Of course it helped that they were not held back by 2 forwards who are sadly out of form / nqr.

Pressure and intensity.

Well that was a fun game to watch twice.

Interesting watching the replay and Jay Clark at the start of the game mentioned that Dees would want either Treacy, Jackson or Amiss (in that order) for a potential trade for Kozzie.

I just hope we keep him. He's so important to us and if our game style continues its evolution towards a more attacking game then he's really going to flourish as well.

And if course they said Longmuir would say no to losing any of them, implying we should take whatever rubbish is offered. [censored] off Freo and [censored] off Jay Clark. Pies nuffy.

Something that was clear to me today at the ground was there was much better assessment of the setup when kicking out. It wasn’t May’s ‘kick it long to Gawn’ over and over. Instead they looked to create, looking for run and overlap at times and other times precision delivery to work it out slowly by our trusted kickers. Bowey is a great playmaker and I hope when May returns he doesn’t bully his way into taking every kick out.

Totally agree & we kicked it out a lot quicker & got it moving. May takes way to long.

May watch some more footy shows this week. Not classified because Sam will still be negative. Maybe the agenda setters. 360 always watch & I'm sure Garry will be happy

Yeah it wasn’t like the first 5 games where we were lucky to kick one in the last, we were unlucky not to kick 4

And very much unlike the first 5 games our last quarter's pressure rating was our highest for the game. That's the first time that's been the case.

For me, this game was about Max getting back to his dominant self.

In the past, a stoppage or out of bounds gave us probably a 60-70+% chance of Max getting us possession.

In these 2025 early rounds, I would say, that % dropped significantly, along with Max's impact through general play.

I'm hoping his game against Freo is a clear sign he has got back to his focused, dominant, and happy self as one of our, and the AFL's greats.

Weirdly, his stat's from last week were better, so what do I know. 🤐

Watching the replay

Sparrow had a good solid game

Sharp does enough and he’s quick

Fullarton surely gets another run

Salem’s game was fine

Thought it was one of Howes better games.

Spargo showed why he’s in the side.

If those guys are our bottom 6 that’s fine by me.

Edited by Roost it far

Oh and I’d of loved to see Turner play 4 quarters. He was very solid prior to being kneed in the head……nothing to see here, no duty of care required….concuss away! The AFL are an utter clown show.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder RIF, I would not have Sharp in the 23. NQR for me.

Nothing beautiful and when May, Lever and McVee are fit and Fritsch and JVR are back in form he’ll likely be at Casey. But for now he’s doing his bit.

At Adelaide ground supporters from North Collingwood Hawthorn and Essendon all agreed Max was best on the ground. A couple of them said they wished they had him.

I understand what he did. He’s fine for bottom 6 when 5 of our best are out. He works hard, pressures players with his run and set up a goal to Langford. Not flash but serviceable.

I think it's Steph currie's three point sign, which would be appropriate given he flushed it from outside the arc

Re: Shai Bolton flying for a speccy and hitting Disco Turner flush in the back of his head with his knee (I’d contend a missile)

Whilst many accept he shouldn’t get time off for this, and protecting the speccy is high on the AFL agenda, doesn’t Bolton have a duty of care as a player who can elevate himself to head height without having to ride up the opponents back?

I’m of the view the AFL are heavily blinkered when it comes to concussion and it [censored] me that they bandy around duty of care at the tribunal when it suits them.

If it just me or do we always seem to be on the receiving end of these injuries?

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
