I think it's pretty clear contracts don't actually mean anything anymore. I didn't get too excited when we signed Kozzy for exactly that reason. It seems the "front-end" value of these deals now is the PR and marketing sugar hit from the announcement with the realistic viability of the contract being seen through very much a "tomorrow problem".

Well, they do, they give the club some leverage in the negotiations. Or as we saw with Trac last year and potentially Curnow and Merrett this year, clubs can simply hold players to their contracts.

I’m amazed that Essendon and Carlton are even considering trading those guys! If they even are! It’s bloody hard to tell.

i get it with us and trac but Merrett and curnow would be absolutely nuts to trade unless they got an outrageous deal

Can anyone explain why Petracca has to cart his wife around with him whilst he meets with other clubs?

Genuinely bizarre and something i have never seen before from any other player previously. Even Chris Judd back in the day when he was talking to clubs down in Melbourne, not once did he ever have Rebecca Twiggley hanging up his arm whilst he was getting interviewed.

Strange..

Top 20 in the league for contested possessions still this year. Same as amount as Lachie Neale and Isaac Heeney... More than players like Butters, Clarry, Jordan Dawson, Holmes, Taranto, Davis-Uniake, Brayshaw etc. 7th in the league for centre clearances too despite spending some time forward.

Slag him off all you want, but facts disprove the narrative around him shirking hard ball this year. He's still an elite contested midfielder, and that's why clubs are still interested in him.

There’s no world where he’s the player he was. I’d be very surprised if you haven’t seen the hesitation that he now has. I’m not slagging him off, I totally understand why that would happen.

She will have to uproot everything and move with him. She had every right to go up with him and help him make a very important decision.

He wants out and he has been a star for us but he is also 30 and its clear we are building around the younger brigade and hopefully a list that can transition better and unlike the other aging midfield bulls Tracc has currency.

Tracc and Sparrow = Flanders and a low pick?

I mean realistically she would have to move interstate as well so it’s fair enough that it’s a joint decision, but I agree with you that it’s a bit unusual, just not something you usually see with this stuff

she's not just his wife she's the ceo of his company

of course she's going to be with him to evaluate what the clubs are saying to him, as what they say to her will be just as important

I think that would work OR 6 and Flanders for Trac and 23 either way it is about the right price.

We’ll be paying a fair whack of his cash that way. Will be anyway if he is going to GC, they’re going to need $$ for Ben King next yr

Potential trade deals so far are way unders!!! We need a very good player PLUS a round 1 draft pick, which is under pick 14.

Petracca has 4 more years under contract.

2nd in MFC 2025 best and fairest, polled 16 votes in this years Brownlow, he’s a 4-time All-Australian, 2xMFC best and fairest, a premiership player and won Norm Smith Medal.

The media still seem to be discussing this through the prism of “what’s fair” rather than “what Melbourne can justify letting trac to for”

We’d have a massive egg on our Face if we let trac go for an average pick in an average draft.

Sounds like GC will be the preferred trading partner for the Dees.

Hopefully nobody gets in Trac’s ear that GC play most of their home games in the Saturday and Sunday 1pm timeslot in front of 6,000 people, most of whom barrack for the oppo. And the cherry on the Sundae will be playing 2 energy sapping Darwin games in 5 days, with the team subsequently falling in a heap the following month.

no one other than mfc fans cares about what mfc will get for him

i suspect it's not going to be what he's worth (to us)

Absolutely. Arguably our best player. A proven finals winner. Norm Smith winner.

Suns are in the window. Humphries and a top 10 pick and they get the champion that can take them there next year.

Plus the AFL get a massive PR opportunity at an expansion club, the old AFL “ambassador role” will sort the contract offset.

Pretty much means GC or the Dees. The GC have pretty of shiny trinkets to dazzle us with. The Flanders pick 7 if he goes to the Saints for starters - we may even insist on pick 6 as we will not likely bid on their academy players around that area.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
