16 goals 7

that's how you win games of footy

Yep Hawthorn aim to score at the apex of the 50 metre arc. The most direct route to goal

I hope eternal that one day the MFC will do the same

Richo is no Rhodes scholar.

He reckons every team should play in OR.

What would the next round be called?

Uh what a shame. Essendon lose.

My god McGrath had a mare tonight.  Sometimes it's hard to believe he went #1

Absolutely, wasn't arguing otherwise.

You still have to get inside 50 but.

Which is basically what hoyne said in the segment being discussed

I reckon the percentage of games won in the 2-3 last seasons by teams having fewer inside 50s than their opponent would be vanishingly small (and yes I know the lions won the flag with 2 less inside 50s).

And I'd add that one thing that hasn't changed is pressure is critical and the team thay applies most pressure is more likely to win (though pies in 2023 were an outlier in this regard).

Horethorn have just beaten Essendrugs with fewer inside 50s. It would be interesting to get the trend over the last 2-3 season - agreed.

my cousin is convinced it's the curse of the bringhton grammar school #1

watts and mcgrath are both super ordinary selections in hindsight

So did the Ashcroft boys though

At first glance the only three words I read in that tweet were "Langford officially out" and I [censored] myself.

It’s funny how the censorship, while being very good and necessary, makes it impossible to tell whether you [censored] yourself, or you [censored] yourself.

Both of which have very different meanings both literally and figuratively.
I’m guessing that you were worried about our team for Sunday?

Meanwhile - on the Essendrugs thread over at Big Footy . . .Well, at least we made Carlton supporters feel a bit better tonight.

Yep. Exception and rule and all that.

By the by the bombers defence is pathetic - both in terms of system and personelle.

Absolutely, it is.
But what the hell have they been doing to the surface?
Think I’ve seen better turf at Birdsville. Spent half the night wiping my screen, thinking it was bugs.🐜

Bombers had plenty taking short steps, Hawks also have many routes to goal. The other thing that was scary is Essendon tried hard early, and Hawks consistently trusted players to do the job without crowding the ball.

No offense to QD but Inside 50 is the most ridiculous stat btw, uncontested marks inside 50, that says something about offensive power or lack of defense.

Thought there was not much difference in effect of having already played, and a first up team.

Essendon, scramble and long down the line kicks, versus a precise disposal and swarming game, with the good use of space by Hawks.

Well we've had 7 teams play in these 4 H&A matches. Every team that won their pre-season game has lost and every one that lost theirs is atop the ladder unbeaten.

Don't know why but I adore this 'dumb' movie. 😂 And, yes, right now we have a chance at everything, except maybe the spoon.

If we go by the following new format, every team will have played each twice by Round 16, thus solving the fixture inequalities  🤪

Sorry folks, but I do not think Hawthorn will make the eight.

The question is whether Essendon is that bad? Possibly yes and have not improved their team.

Now I hate them almost as much as Collingwood.

100%
Both supporter bases are interchangeable nuffies.
Collingwood are special tho'.

Went to Victoria Park once.
Walking up to the gate I had a retarded bloke in a black'n white wheelchair tell us to "Fork off Melbourne." while flipping the weirdest bird I'd ever seen.
For a kid raised at the MCG I was flabbergasted.
Then had to watch 'em overrun a 27pt 3/4 time lead.
I thought the Zulus we're comin'.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
