A lot of posters here have been kidding themselves about McAdam. The fact that he tried hard & is a lovely bloke are beside the point.

There is a reason he has never completed a full season at AFL level.

Certainly talented but struggled with fitness & very injury prone.

He was always a high risk pick & now it's looking like a bust.

Frank, he hasn't achieved his potential with us yet and now he might never play again.

Lots of our players have come good after disappointing starts and some return to their best after bad spells. I thought he was about to come good this year.

None of us had any foreknowledge of Shane's Achilles rupturing on the verge of what looked like a promising season.   Now all that time and effort from him and all his support and coaching staff might have been for nought.

I think it's fair enough that you can feel disappointed in his output to date, but it's not his fault he's had a sudden catastrophic injury.

So even though he hasn't turned out to be another fairytale recruit like a Fritta or a Harmesey,  I don't think it's fair to disparage him, especially not in the immediate aftermath.

He's a Demon.  Now he's a Demon with a long term injury, but he's still a Demon and deserves a bit more compassion and human decency, like you'd hope to receive if your career was cut short in an instant.

It was a very poor decision by the MFC to give up Pick 28 for McAdam.
if we had used Pick 70 i wouldn’t have minded one bit, he has loads of talent, but he was always injured at The Croms

Trading Senior Players has let us down very badly in the last 2-3 years

Yep very poor indeed!

Just ridiculous and apart from anything else, nothing but hindsight bias.

A few here are going on about how he was always injured at the Crows, but even without playing full seasons he was in their top 3 for goals in 21 and 22. It was absolutely worth taking a punt on a damaging forward and backing in the fitness staff to get him right.

This discussion has been done to death though SWYL. I think the majority of us agree that it was a strange one for the club to give up that pick, but the discussion recently was around people supporting him and hoping for the best, only for him to get another devastating injury. This wasn’t an injury related to his history either and is one that just pops up randomly.

Of course it was an injury related to his history, he has always been injury prone, didn’t suprise me at all when it happened. I feel sorry for him, it’s not his fault, but he was never worth Pick 28…

So a ruptured Achilles tendon was an injury he had in the past was it?

Hindsight Bias, are you serious??

If you buy a 2nd hand car, do you study its history, finding out as much as you can? Or are you a fingers crossed “hope it will be ok” kinda guy…??

Pick 28 is 2nd Round, pretty good players have been secured at 28

McAdam was in the “Give him a chance category” or should have been

Top 3 for goals in a pi$$ poor team isn't much to hang your hat on.

Even then he couldn't get through a full season without getting injured.

A very poor return for what we gave the Crows.

Ridiculous, if you buy an old car with some potential and you’re a great mechanic then of course you take the punt. Our fitness people had him on the verge of fulfilling his talent. His injury is a cruel blow for a kid who’s apparently worked his backside off to give himself the best chance at success. Yes he’s likely a bust in the cruel light of day but pick 28 rarely gets you a 200 game player. The club will help him recover and he’ll likely be delisted and we’ll move on. He won’t be the last pick in the late 20’s to play very few games. Ranting about wasteful picks is hyperbole.

I am certainly not ranting.
McAdam should have always been a late pick. His body had let him down too many times, that is a fact.
His career is over at the Top level, and his output on the field was negligible.

God help us that players want to spend less time at their job while us normal people spend 8 hours + day at work for for less money than they are on for six months a year and have 8 weeks + a year off come off it give me a break.

Mate if you were better than 99.5% of the People in your chosen field, as AFL players are, you probably would be on the same wage and entitlements!  People are quick to forget this fact, even the last player on a list is better than 99% of the players in other leagues

(And to quote the great G Lyon, you've been "Mated")

Trading for players is a gamble. You win some, you lose some.

It's probably review and learn situation with each trade.

Lately we have lost more than gained.

Fortunately our recruiting/drafting has been good.

Certainly talented & has that x factor. Not sure he is the most team oriented player going - seems a tad hungry but then again maybe that's not a bad thing in a forward.

Or are you just trying to vent about your own life? Us ‘normal’ people don’t kick a ball for a living

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”).
