How about all these Eagles fans that suddenly became overnight experts on Xerri's year.

They really should be happy that they have the 2nd best ruckman of the modern era.

Greatest ever ruckman.

The thing with the Gawn vs Xerri debate, i kept telling my old man, Xerri will have 20 disposals, 5 marks, 30 hit outs and people will be blown away, but Gawn will do it the same weekend, against a much better opponent and noone will talk about it because we're so used to him dominating.

the absolute best games of the competitions other ruckman, reach the average games we see from Max Gawn. the guys a freak.

I remember being down at Geelong for his break out game. It's incredible to think how far he has come and how much he has grown as a leader.

Well done, big man.

I watch in awe and listen in wonder. One day, I'd like to shake this man's hand, and thank him for bringing so much happiness to so many people.

I cannot believe the negativity sprouted by opposition supporters surrounding his selection.

Have they been watching gawn? He has been the standard for the past decade, and keeps finding ways to influence the game.

There is no comparison in the modern era. He stands above all as the greatest modern day Ruckman to play the game.

Sadly some opposition supporters won't recognize his greatness until he's long retired.

Enjoy big Max while you can, as I'm sure he'll hang them up at the conclusion of his recent contract extension.

Well deserved Max - a tower of strength (literally) for this great club

The thing that opposition supporters seem to forget is that all teams try to physically beat Max up every game with borderline legal tactics. The great man just keeps going about his business without complaining or whining.

The best ruck in the competition by some margin and his 7th AA says it all

It was the same with blokes like Buckley.  They are so good, so often and fans and media alike are desperate for the next new thing. When you are as consistently good as guys like Buckley and Gawn, it gets boring.  You are right - enjoy it while we can.  I have not seen a better ruckman since Simon Madden.  Gawn's ability to genuinely influence games goes beyond marks, possessions and hitouts.  Teams develop game plans to nullify him.  They try to play around him, or rough him up.  The big fella always finds a way. He is an all time great and in time will take his place amongst the absolute best in the Hall of Fame.  I have a feeling his influence might extend well beyond his playing days.

I know the rest of the comp think he is good but only those of us who know what he does both on and off the field  and have followed his career trajectory can truly understand his greatness.

Multiple knee reco's and in his own words only a bad hammy or knee injury away from retirement. He get attacked every week bu just shrugs it off and gets on with the game. He is the finest captain I have seen at the dees and I have been watching since the 60's.

He defends his club and love his quote on radio this week, I am sure directed at MaClure and Morris :

"I missed the memo when you could write on gossip. I thought you had to get facts."

I was 20 metres away when he did his knee in a practice match at Casey. At that stage, he was in the conversation about potential, but nothing more.

Look what hard work can do.

Tap ruck work better than Nichols, Farmer, Moore snr and Cox, as good as Madden and Dempsey.

His early atrocious kicking transforms 10 years later into 1) outside F50 booming monsters 2) checksides  3) on the run across his body..  5 in a Prelim!

Around the ground team play including contested marking so influential that teams double team him, play around him, smack into the back of his head, drive knees in, crash into him off the ball. He gets up, gets to the next contest and excels again.

Athletic work rate - the best ruckman ever. We talk about Langdon and ANB, Gawn's work rate is equal to theirs and gets so little mention.

From the smoking lay-about to a thought-provoking, articulate, no nonsense public speaker who has the rare ability to not settle for the lowest common denominator of professional-sportsman-speak. e.g. the boys did well, great to get four points, lots of learnings blah, blah, blah.

And as influential red and blue Dees man as Barassi, Ridley, N Smith, and G Lyon.

Giant of our club and our game who is an unshakable presence.

Well done Max.

My daughter spotted Max and 3 other Dee's (one may have been Ed she thought) on Monday at a well regarded Fitzroy restaurant.

The room stopped and went quiet when he walked in and the four of them had a quiet lunch enjoying each other's company.

He was a sight to behold apparently.

How lucky are we to have been following his career.

I have been watching the MFC now for nearly 70 years and he is without doubt the best Ruckman we have ever had and in my opinion the best player we have ever had. Yep that includes RF. He is seldom if ever beaten.

Not since watching Robbie Flower (in 1987 particularly) have I gone to the footy fully aware that in watching Max Gawn, I’m experiencing Australian football greatness. Something singular and unrepeatable. It’s the same feeling I had watching Shane Warne bowl, or Haile Gebrselassie run. The broader audience won’t realise this until he’s retired of course, for the reason as stated - he’s just Max, and his immeasurable excellence is just what we expect. That he’s become the leader and personality we see, with a sage demeanour beyond his years, is just extra. Well done Max, you are truly that waaaay overused word - a legend.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
