Thanks @spirit of norm smith

I reckon the VFL could be a great source of players for us as we look to top up, as we can’t simply bring in 6-7 eighteen year olds in the ND and expect to fill all of our list holes

Geelong in particular has done a great job in recent years with their late ND, rookie and SSP picks, and I hope we’ve got our eye on a couple of mature age players who might be going under the radar at one of these clubs

Pass this list on to Tim Lamb. Suggest that it's a better source of talent than recruiting rejects from other clubs.

The 2 former Casey players nominated for the Fothergill-Round- Mitchell Medal for best Under 23 player, George Grey and Corey Ellison, have now both been named in the VFL Team of the Year 40 person squad, which is open to AFL listed players.

How did Jean-Luc Vellissaris miss out on the All VFL squad? Clearly one of the best players in the league and carries the Bullants.

Brodie McLaughlin (Williamstown) continues to shine as a goalkicker. After being equal highest goalkicker for Gold Coast reserves in 2023, with 60. I see he has kicked 10 in two finals games for Williamstown in 2024. He is 26 and would be handy at Casey, might cover for the likes of J Smith in the firsts on occasions. Affordable depth in my opinion.

Why do people keep bringing up players who could provide depth or be handy at Casey? If a player is mature aged, they should be competing for a place in the seniors.

The standout VFL players in 2023 to be drafted were Mannagh and Clohessy. Both have established themselves in the best 23 at their respective clubs. And Mannagh had a huge impact in a final.

That's the sort of player we should be targeting.

You need to take a closer look mate! Quite a few clubs have had some success by picking up mature (26 is hardly mature aged) Don’t be so critical when you obviously don’t watch VFL games other than Casey!

You've missed my point. I'm all for recruiting players from the VFL, but not for the reasons you posted. Any recruit should be capable of challenging for senior selection and not be "affordable depth" or "handy at Casey" as you stated.

Shhhhh… wildcard pick as a mature smoky

WAFL ruckman Oliver Eastland should be one to watch out as a smoky late draftee.  Finished 4th in the Sandover medal after an excellent year.  He’s 26 but all ruck players develop later.  Unlucky not to get drafted, he played WAFL and had injuries through earlier years and now is reliable ruckman. At WAFL he’s dominated in the last 3 years at Claremont.  Saw him v SANFL this year again. He’s a ruck/forward but at 199cms is quite agile.  Certainly would be a handy back up addition in the squad.

From the SANFL, I think the best player suitable to pickup is Billy Cootee from Norwood.  Has averaged about 25 possessions a game, excellent metres gained, good skills, hard at it plus can run and burst when needed.  Kicks goals.  Skipper of Western Jets in 2021.  Had 2 years on Essendon VFL list (including every game in 2023) then transferred to Norwood at start of 2024.  At 21, still can rise up.  Perhaps a late draft pick

What about the JJ Listin Trophy Winner Brew he would be no 1 maybe at one if the pick 30,40 or 50 stage. Good midfielder.

Agree it’s all about how high you aim and the higher the better.

@58er  under the thread 2024 Phantom Drafts, I had my update with Brew at #61. Late draft chance.   Would like to see the Dees take him if available.   Midfielder.  Excellent left foot disposal.  Tackles were real impact.   Mature decision maker.  Certainly has the ability to play AFL, and not just be depth or good at Casey.

Is a man-moutain. That delivery inside 50 was great for a ruckman.

reigning magarey medallist harry boyd has won a lot of taps but has no impact around the ground whatsoever

Crossley is dominating in the ruck, very good with strength and taps to advantage. Field kicking is great for a big man, several taps and possessions have led to shots on goal. Wonder if anyone would take a punt on him again? 25 y.o.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
