2025 fixture wishlist

Has that stinking club ever played a game in The Apple Isle?

No.

I believe their most off broadway game was against North in Canberra, 2001.

They've never played in Darwin, Hobart, Launceston or Alice Springs.

They probably feel insulted when they cop Gold Coast and Giants Stadium.

Release the fixture in its entirety!!!

I’m done buying concert tickets for example, then having to choose between attending the concert and attending the footy.

Would also be cool to be able to book flights in December (for the coming season) while they’re cheaper.

Oh and no stoopid Opening Round, especially select clubs having to travel interstate for it. But if it has to remain, how’s about we call it Round One. Sounds crazy, I know. But it might just work. 🙄

Selfishly, way less night games for a change please. Living in a regional Victoria means a hotel overnight or getting home at 2am on the train.

This is the list of teams in order of the difficulty of their fixtures based on position at the end of the home and away series. If we recognise that the draw is supposed to reflect where the the teams finished at the end of 2023.

While I agree with the sentiment, it’s a circular argument. We think the draw affects the ladder position, and then we compare the ladder position with the draw.

Others will disagree but I hope we're not involved in Opening round next year, particularly against Sydney.

I think the club needs to try and fly under the radar early next year rather than play on the prime time opening Thursday night, where if we lose the media will find the earliest opportunity to sink their boots in.

Therefore an ''off Broadway" winnable 1:10 game against a West Coast or Gold Coast at the MCG in round 1 proper would be an ideal way to start the season and get the club feeling good again.

I also hope we don't cop a tough first 3 weeks against contenders, without Kozzie.

BBP - as I understand the absurdly named round zero involves the top 8 teams from the previous year, so if that is the case we will miss out.

First 3 weeks "soft games" (though never forget our 'percentage builder game v WCE this year 😮) as we will be withiout Kozzie so we will get the top 3 from this year as away games no doubt.

Is that new for Opening round next year as Richmond were involved this year and they didn’t play finals in 2023?

I’d like our trip to Hobart back please. Always a good weekend, especially with North still being rubbish.

No Saturday night games

No night games against interstate sides at the MCG.

ah we beat them by a couple of points in Melbourne

With 18 teams each playing 23 games in a 24-round season, all clubs are hit with ‘double-up’ match-ups, where certain sides play games against each other twice during the year.

The AFL uses a ‘weighted rule’ to determine who plays each other twice, breaking the 18 teams into three groups: the top six teams from the previous year’s ladder (based on finals results), the middle six and bottom six.

Teams then play teams that finished in their bracket on the ladder more often - though this rule is rubbery at best !!!

Top six: Swans, Power, Cats, Giants, Lions, Dogs

Middle six: Hawks, Blues, Pies, Freo, Bombers, Saints,

Bottom six:   Suns, Dees, Crows, Eagles, Kangas, Tigers

so we should perhaps play

2x Suns, Tigers, Kangas, Bombers, Freo, and Lions

AFL to really shaft us

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
