which current afl players were ever on the Fitzroy list?

i can only think of 2...

Chris Johnson

Daniel Ward (Supp list only)

John Barker retired last year so he is out

Posted

no, johnson remained the last player who was on fitzroys final list still competing in the afl. the player i am thinking of was traded at the end of the 1995 season.

another hint: he is now at his 3rd club.

Technically correct, but he never stepped inside the door of the club!

Any idea why? I seem to remember they took him fairly early in the draft, but I wasn't aware that he never actually went to the club.

all i know is he was drafted by them in 1994 and then traded to richmond in in 1995...he went at about pick 14, then went to richmond for picks 16? and 32 i think. before coming to us for 20.

thats some very high draft picks there fore dutchy over the years.

They took him with pick 19 according to Wikipedia.

yeah your right nasher. here it is from melbournefc.com.au

Draft History

1994 National AFL Draft 1st round selection (Fiztroy) No.19 overall traded by West Coast for Michael Dunstan

1995 National AFL Draft traded by Fiztroy to Richmond for No.16 (Shane Clayton) and No. 32 (Nigel Credlin)

2003 NAB AFL Draft traded by Richmond for No.20 (Sam Butler)

Don't know. He was selected with pick 19, three picks after we picked Yze. Richmond used picks 16 and 32 in 1995 to get him again.

in the 'melbourne alamanac 2007' it says that he didn't come over from north adelaide until going to richmond.

was wardy ever on the fitzroy list? or just ressies?

He was on the supplementary list, but was never on the senior list.

In the bad old days of the draft a player did not have to commit to going to a club that drafted him. Benny was from Adelaide and, I believe, completing a graduate course, and declined to go to Fitzroy. The quirky thing is that Fitzroy still had dibs on him and was able to trade them to Richmond who convinced Benny to come over. If you go back to MFC's first draft picks, you will see that we once drafted Darren Jarman who also declined to make the trip over.

Yep. West Coast drafted Tim Watson at one stage, who did not go over. West Coast also drafted a young lad from Tassie by the the name of Gavin Cooney who did not go, but went on to be one of the state's best players at the top level down here. He would have easily made it in the AFL had he gone.

Former Tasmanian Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup batsman Jamie Cox was also drafted by Essendon in the late 80s but elected to persue his cricket career instead.

That's my trivia for the day.

I remember a few years ago when a boy from Perth (Clancy Rudeforth?) wrote to all the clubs outside WA telling them that if they drafted him, he would not go. I believe they changed the rules after that.

demonstorm, that shows you how much the afl helped out the interstate teams back then. the fact that we could draft him but didnt have any way to force him to play for us or nobody tells you a lot about the system back then.

Na we drafted Darren but he didn't come over.

The Mad Monk is apparently coaching quite well in the SANFL, instructing his players to run run run, doing a good job I hear. Wouldn't have picked him as one to go into coaching.

Was on SEN last weekend, and gave one of the better interviews in recent history in my book. He said that he sits down with Neil Craig and Mark Williams often to discuss up and comers. He says that Neil always sits down and syas give me athletes, athletes and more athletes. Jarman claims that he's a good coach, but can't understand why he doesn't want to recruit footballers. He then said Williams was an out and out arrogant jerk, and that he and Mark don't get on... brave stuff really, when you think about. Well.... brave or just plain.... Jarman.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
